Questions? Ask our experts:

The US-2000 from Tascam is a high-speed multi-channel USB 2.0 audio interface that's compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. It provides 16 inputs and 4 outputs in a single rack space, with both analog and digital audio I/O. Every input and output has a dedicated 5-segment LED meter on the front panel (a total of 100 LEDs), so you can always keep an eye on your audio signals.

The 6 line-level 1/4" TRS inputs on the rear of the US-2000 can be used simultaneously with all of the XLR inputs, and the digital S/PDIF inputs. The power to record 16 inputs at the same time makes the US-2000 an excellent interface for recording large groups of musicians, multiple sources on a video or film set, etc. Phantom power is engaged in pairs on the US-2000, and it's provided on all 8 of the XLR inputs. You can adjust the volume levels of the headphone output and the main outputs separately.

The included Cubase LE4 is a powerful audio and MIDI recording application that allows you to record and mix up to 48 audio tracks and 64 MIDI tracks. You can automate your mixes, sweeten the sound with an included assortment of plug-ins, and create elaborate MIDI sequences. Like the US-2000, Cubase LE4 is also fully compatible with both Windows and Mac computers.

I use this unit to capture 14 channels of audio onto a Macbook Pro. It was easy to set up and the interface is very user friendly. From the time we took it out of the book to recoding was 10 minutes and most of that time was spent setting up the Cubase software. As of right now there is nothing I don't like about it. My only concern was latency issues with the USB 2.0 but it performs just as well as my firewire units at half the cost per channel.

I am a Film Music Composer. I actually loved this product up front. The price is unbeatable. It has a really great sound. And I liked that it was USB at first. I was using it with a 2010 MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard OS. As soon as I loaded the driver (updated from the Tascam website) I experienced a huge amount of work load on my CPU. Especially if the computer was unplugged. In the "Activity Monitor" on my laptop, there was something that was called kernal_task that would freak out and use up all remaining CPU power as soon as I unplugged. I called Apple, and Tascam. But the only way to fix it was to remove the software and return the device. I'm no expert, but I would say that this interface probably works incredibly on another OS. But if you are running my identical setup, try something firewire and make sure it is compatible with 64-bit systems.
I was sad to return it because I think it is an awesome looking interface, and I loved the price and setup.

Comments about Tascam US-2000 - Multi-Channel USB 2.0 Computer Audio Interface:

I use this unit in a small home studio - I just upgraded from an older 2 input TASCAM unit. For an all in one USB device, I don't know how you could ask for much more without buying the professional alternatives instead. It is pretty sturdy. It works exactly as described and I have no complaints. The sound is nice for what it is. I downloaded the newest drivers from TASCAM's site rather than use the disc that came with it which still had the old drivers on it. Like other people have mentioned it'd be nice if the pots were bigger and more spaced out but it's really not much of an issue. If you aren't running a full studio and you'd like to track several instruments/singers at once or a full drum kit for a reasonable price, you will get a reasonable performance out of this unit.

Comments about Tascam US-2000 - Multi-Channel USB 2.0 Computer Audio Interface:

I've been using a Tascam 788 Portustudio for the past 10 years; finally took the plunge into PC recording with this unit. I read a review that the US-1800 did not have stereo monitoring, so went for the US-2000.I love that I can mic a whole drum kit, stereo bass guitar and two stereo guitars, all at once. Am still learning the CubaseLE5 software, but was able to record a great jam of 4 guys with a day's prep. I'm happy.

Comments about Tascam US-2000 - Multi-Channel USB 2.0 Computer Audio Interface:

The first thing that wasn't so nice is that I have a w7 64 bit machine and the drivers that come with the unit are for a 32bit machine. This made installation a problem with this mismatch and I wasn't impressed that the 64 bit drivers were not included andno metion of it as well. So, for several days I struggled with the installation. Thankfully I called B&H and they got Tascam on the phone and a link was provided to the right drivers. I installed them and things are going better now. I like the unit and I'm finding it easy to use still more to learn. It's a good unit for the price and has great value. Just get by the installation and make sure you have the right drivers and you'll be just fine.

The driver software withstand its consistency throughtout recording session. You can leave the device on for hours without worry about the dropping off from the Operating System. Clarity and high quality sound return, etc. Definitely recommend to all starters and may be semi-pro!

For the price of this gear you can't go wrong. I saved $60 by getting it through B & H compared to [@] and that was even w the shipping plus the other places didn't even have it in stock The preamps are really clean, optional phantom for every 2 channels is perfect, and the LED lights are helpful as well. My only complaint which I hope it doesn't happen again is that channel 3 won't release the XLR cable. I don't want to void any return policy or wreck it so I didn't try and force it out.

Comments about Tascam US-2000 - Multi-Channel USB 2.0 Computer Audio Interface:

I use this as part of my recording studio with Pro Tools 10. It works very well with my Mackie board, although it's clearly made to be used without a mixer. There's no problem putting a preamped sgnal into the tascam's preamps (no way to bypass them) - completely transparent!

The driver's another story! I never did get it to work 100%. Windows 7 64 bit would not recognize this hardware as anything more than a stereo speaker! The ASIO Control Panel for the Unit only adresses the two Digital I/O channels, which most of us won't use. What about the other 14?

I tried calling Technical Support, but they're the worst I've seen - No live support. I left a message, but they never bothered to return my call.
After wringing my hands in frustration 'cause Pro Tools found the units buffer size unacceptable, I finally realized that the analog channel buffer size could be increased by increasing the latency of the digital channels!
I still have trouble with Cubase VST 5, though. They really need to make a better ASIO driver.
In addition, I found it could be better made. It refused to let go of a connector. Sooner or later, I'll have to take the jack apart and probably void the warranty so I can remove the cable.
It has a good sound, but prints a little thin, compared to my Delta 1010 - nothing I can't fix up in the mix, though. The front panel display is a really nice pro feature! The phantom power by channel is a nice touch, too.
What really makes this stand out is the number of analog inputs it provides. Most units only have eight - no matter HOW MANY they channels they claim to have - 24, 36, 44! You can pay $2000 and MAYBE get 10 analog channels!
All in all, this is a great piece of hardware for the price. Yes - the drivers are substandard, but I'll find a way around it; it could be built better, but look at what you get for the money; anyway - I'll take it apart and fix it. These are more of an annoyance than a problem!
I gave it 4 stars 'cause it wasn't an OOBE (out of box experience) - I plugged it in and it didn't work.

Comments about Tascam US-2000 - Multi-Channel USB 2.0 Computer Audio Interface:

When i was looking to upgrade my recording interface from a firewire 400 decive to a USB 2.0 device, i had looked at all the different models available, and i have to say, that this US-2000 device is by far the best. Besides interfacing really well with my Logic Pro application on my iMac the interface itself has some great little features, its got the little dust flaps for the top XLR inputs which are great to have since i live out here in the desert of New Mexico where dust is a huge problem. The graphic display has REALLY helped to eliminate any clipping issues when im setting the input or monitoring the output to my monitors and headphones. I would highly recommend this device to anyone who wants to put in the few extra bucks compaired to the slightly cheaper units, if you would like to hear the device in action check out jordanojames on the web. Cheers.

Overall I was disappointed with the Tascam US-2000. The knobs are too close together and on top of a switch that is hard to read. In addition the metering is hard to read. It did install with no problems and the pres sounded good and the output sounded better than my Tascam FW-1804 which I was trying to replace. But... Trying to overdub created it's own set up problems such as errors and dropouts. Since the unit was lacking many features I wanted I did not try to trouble-shoot this problem and returned to B and H. Tascam isn't supporting their FW series and I wanted to give them a shot since I am upgrading but I was very disappointed with this unit. I have to say for the price it is not bad, it just did not work for what I needed it to do which is essentially replace the FW1804 but with more inputs and a USB interface.

I use this interface for recording live events. It works well and produces very good results. Compared to other products the Windows software offers fairly limited configurability. Seems like it wouldn't take much development to fix the software's deficiencies and make this product jump from good to outstanding.

Comments about Tascam US-2000 - Multi-Channel USB 2.0 Computer Audio Interface:

Having just switched from a Yamaha 01X, I found the US-2000 a breeze to set up. Sure, I am missing some of the 01X features, but my main need was for an interface with Win7-64 drivers to use in my home studio. I can always add a mixer and/or FX later to get those other features back.

The important thing is that the sound quality is superb, and the monitoring options are very flexible and practical. The front input controls, and the two guitar/mic inputs are part of a great user interface. I can use it with or without the computer, something I could not do with the US-1800. And, the price is right.

My main beef is that the knobs are very small and take some getting used to. Also, the headphone amp seems to be pretty weak.

Comments about Tascam US-2000 - Multi-Channel USB 2.0 Computer Audio Interface:

I've been this using this for guerilla recording. Recording in basements, rehearsal spaces, in-home studios, garages, etcetera, and the results have sounded pretty good. The sound is clean, there aren't any pops, clicks or hums. It's an easy to use interface, all your preamps controls are right on the front, and phantom power can be turned on in two channels at a time. It's pretty straightforward.

There's only one headphone out, and the built-in amp is pretty weak. I was having drummers say they couldn't hear the click track, so I invested in a headphone amp. I've also found the 'instrument input' on inputs seven and eight to be entirely useless, but that's what DIs are for.

Other than those two minor qualms, there's not a lot to complain about given it's price.

So far the only things I can really say that I don't "like" about it is that it doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack. This is in no way a downside. Just a downside for me since I recently lost my studio headphones and the 1/4 inch adapter for the 3.5mm ones I still have. So far I've used the unit for recording of instruments and vocals through a condenser mic. a MXL 990. Not a very high end mic but the sounds it produced was much superior to my old Lexicon Lambda unit. Plus the phantom power works good as well. The other thing I don't really like about the unit is the fact that unless you are looking straight on at the front or from a relatively forward angle you can't see the LED lights too easily. This isn't a major problem though. Another thing is if you do buy this unit you have to have a rack to put it on because it doesn't work to well just sitting on a desk. Other than that I have not had a single problem with the unit itself. Though I must warn you there is a really difficult problem when using Cubase LE 4 with it. The program WILL NOT recognize more than 2 i/o's unless you assign buses to allow the other i/o's to be viewed as "active". Keep this in mind so you don't get a headache trying to figure out why the other 14 in's don't work. Hit up the Steinberg forum for more details. In other words this product was worth every [$] that I payed for it and I would recommend this as a very good mid-high level recording interface. It's a good step up if you are looking to be a professional studio recorder, but is cheap enough if you're just wanting to be a hobbyist.
