Got this head for a set of Gitzo Mountaineer 1127 MK2 Sport Carbon Fiber legs. The 494 head is the perfect size for those legs. I love Manfrotto ball heads of this type because of their simplicity; just one lever unlocks the ball, no large protruding handle like the grip heads. Made of sturdy materials and lightweight.

The only possible con would be the friction knob. The older generation of heads (488, 486, 484) didn't have this and I wish it wasn't added to Manfrotto's newer heads. It's an extra knob that just gets in the way. Not a big deal in the end since the knob is small.

Mine developed a problem after only 3 or 4 days of use. First I noticed the plate was wiggling a little in the quick release seat. A little later I realized that this was because the quick release locking lever was a little loose (it was able to move vertically a little). Not having experience with this type of QR system before, I continued to use it: being sure to lock down the lever with a little force seemed to keep the plate from moving. However, eventually the locking lever stopped springing into place as it should and I realized a had a real problem. On closer inspection the screw holding the locking lever to the head was loosening a little with each locking cycle. I tightened it but it kept loosening.

I will have to send it in for repair. Seems like a simply thing to keep this from happening, and I have not read anyone else who has had this problem. So maybe it was just a one time problem with my head.

Comments about Manfrotto 494 Mini Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

Planning to use this ball head primarily on a table dolly for the Nikon D5100. Thought I would test the friction out using my much heavier D80 with 18-200 Nikkor lens (3lb 2.7oz). Minimum torquing on the friction lock holds camera firmly in position. I'm a huge fan of the Manfrotto QR design as it holds the camera plate nicely and engages the safety latch for extra security. Looks like I'll need to invest in a hot shoe level to set the camera up just right. Will be curious to see how the friction on the ball holds up over time but if it's anything like some of the other Manfrotto products I own, I'll have a trouble-free piece of equipment

I have only used the ball head several times but the instructions where easy to understand and the head performs as I expected. Especially because it is a Manfrotto. Look forward to hiking with it.

Comments about Manfrotto 494 Mini Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

As with the most popular negative review listed for this product, I am also experiencing the exact same problem with the release plate coming loose in the locked position (when camera is mounted on tri-pod). The screw can only be tightened so much and it will work for a day before coming loose again. I will have to get it fixed or be forced to buy another product. I've had this product for about 4 months and typically use it once every 2 weeks for a few hours.

I bought this ball head to use on a small carbon fiber tripod. Nice because it accepts the same shoe as the tilt head on my monopod. Feels very solid and easy to adjust. It would be nice if it were a little lighter but you can't have everything.

Comments about Manfrotto 494 Mini Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

Purchased this head for quick adjustments with my Lastolite Ezybox II light box! It seems to be the perfect match! It can easily handle the weight of the box, bracket, and the two strobes without any difficulty! I prefer the ball head to the supplied swivel bracket as I can move it from a light stand, to a monopod, or t-pod for support easily with the Manfrotto QR system. Also it's much more stable than the swivel support! Adjustments in any direction are a quick 1/2 turn away! You'll need a Manfrotto 014-38 Rapid Adapter, and Manfrotto 119 Short Adapter Spigot (currently less than $15 for both) to mount it to most light stands, but that's it! I've paired my with the Avenger A0025B leveler stand, and 10LB Manfrotto weight. A supurb combo for any conditions!

Somewhat difficult to get used to especially when used in conjunction with the Manfrotto 243 window clamp, makes it a little too high. Provides a steady, firm mount in game preserves and roadside wildlife photography

I originally bought the 496 and returned it for this one, it is a bit smaller and fits on my Joby focus gorilla pod perfectly, although I don't use it for my camera and haven't tested it with my pro body and zooms, it holds a manfrotto super clamp and a Lastolite trigrip difflector wonderfully also set up small soft boxes. I am very confident it will hold my camera just fine if I ever need it to.

This is just what I was looking for. I have a travel tripod and the head that came with it was to hard for me to use. With the 494 I can adjust the knob just for me. Love the ball head, its the only way to get those great unexpected shots!I also use the Mini Ball Head with my monopod.

I have had extremely good luck with Manfrotto gear - and this ball head works very well. I use it with my gorillapod focus flexible mini-tripod.

Comments about Manfrotto 494 Mini Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

I am disabled, so I have to have equipment that is both lightweight and easy to use with my limited mobility and strength. This ballhead fit the bill perfectly; it's compact, lightweight, and the tightener works great. It actually is better than expected, being more stable. The friction tightener makes changing camera positions so much easier because the camera doesn't just flop all over when loosening the main tightener. If I had known how good Manfrotto was, I would have spent a little extra for their stuff right away - it's made my shoots go much smoother!

Well made, quick release head. Using on monopod and table dolly. Did not include bushing for mounting on 1/4" mounts, but fortunately I had one from an older head.

Comments about Manfrotto 494 Mini Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

This is the second one of these I have bought. I have some huge Slik legs and I got this head to go on those but now I have bought some lighter Manfrotto legs and got a second head for those legs. The only downside I see is the lack of and independent panning ability. My Slik legs has a swivel on it for panning but the cheaper MF legs do not. This makes multi shot panoramas tricky. Otherwise, strong, versatile and light. A great head.

Comments about Manfrotto 494 Mini Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

This is a nice ball head, especially for the price. It is well built and the knobs lock down the ball very firmly so your camera will remain stable. My only gripe is that I wish Manfrotto had taken a page from the Sirui ball heads and included a separate control for panning only. I've used this ball head as well as a similar Sirui model (the C-10) on a monopod for sports photography and I find the Sirui model a bit better since it has a separate panning control knob that allows me to pan across a moving subject while still locking down the pitch and roll aspects of the ball. But the Sirui model is quite a bit more expensive.
