The TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod from Tamrac is constructed of sturdy, high-quality aluminum with a heavy-duty ballhead. Weighing in at just 11 oz (312 g) and measuring 15" when folded, the ZipShot is highly portable and can fit almost anywhere. It can support a DSLR with a lens, or a camcorder up to 3 lb (1361 g).

There are many situations when a tripod is needed to capture a great shot: a fleeting photo opportunity of the perfect sunset or the family photo with everyone in it. The problem is that most tripods are heavy, difficult to carry and slow to set up which causes many missed photo opportunities. This tripod is a great remedy. When its two red shock cords are released, the Zipshot springs open in seconds to a height of 44" (112cm). A single release lever of the included ballhead allows the camera or camcorder to be positioned at any angle so vertical and horizontal shots are easy.

I got this last week. Simply AMAZING!

The tripod sets up in 5 seconds, almost fits in a coat pocket, is pretty stable when set up correctly, the ball head bends 90 degs, and collapses in 10 seconds. If you're looking for something handy, there's none other like it!

I read an earlier very negative review. It was absolutely unfair because He doesn't even own one. I know this because the tubes are made of aluminum and not fiberglass as he described it.

This tripod is not as sturdy as I would have liked when fully extended and it is only usable, when fully extended. I added a few rubber bands to the legs that did not have factory installed tie-downs and turned it into a usable tabletop tripod. The factory should consider putting the tie down devices on all three legs and make this standard as it doubles the usuability of the device at very little extra cost. It is very compact and easy to set up which is why I bought it but it is not as stable as I had hoped it would be.

Good legs, bad head

Comments about Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod (Black):

I like this tripod for its legs, but the head is pretty terrible. Calling it heavy-duty is really a joke. When deploy this, it is quick and convenient as advertised. You just have to make sure the legs are spread out all the way to maximize stability.

As for the head, it doesn't really have a friction zone to work with. It's either completely loose, or it's somewhat tightened. My concern is I never felt that it's fully tightened. While I don't have a doubt it can support 3 lbs standing upright, but I don't think I will put lets say a m4/3 camera with longer lens because I think the off center of gravity will be beyond the capability of this head.

Comments about Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod (Black):

I was continually leaving my tripod at home on backpacking, motorcycling, and basically any trip where I journeyed by plane due size, weight, and just hassle of setting it up for a quick shot. This tripod is light, compact, and sets up and breaks down quickly. I am using the tripod with a Sondy alpha NEX-3N mirrorless digital camera and it is plenty stable. Some reviews cite stability problems ... I have not experienced that but could see it coming into play with a significantly heavier camera. One is unable to raise or lower the camera with this tripod, but you can change the camera angle/tilt for all directions. If you order it with this in mind, you will not be disappointed. If you order it expecting the fully range of tripod features ... it will fall short. NOTE: you also need to order separately, a Tamrac adapter that allows you to quickly clip your camera onto the tripod.

I love this item, it's ease of use, and portability.

Comments about Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod (Black):

This tripod is very small prior to deployment.
        It is very light.
        Convenient
Only holds a few pounds securely so will probably not work for a full size SLR.
Must be fully deployed with legs completely extended outward to be stable.
Good for travel with a range finder or compact camera. Like any tripod, it is only useful if you have it with you...ergo, the value of light and small with the tradeoffs.

Great little tripod that almost opens itself. Good for a light point and shoot but I promarily got it so I could put a RF remote flash on it for side lighting. Very light, easy to carry. DO NOT put anythign heavy on it, it is not designed for that.

My wife and I travel a lot and most of the time we need somebody to take our picture. And this is were the Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact comes, very light and compact.I have a Nikon CP7100 and with a remote comes in handy, not recommended with my NikonD500 with 18-200 lens which I dont carry anymore on our travel.Very happy with the tripod
and highly recommended to those who travel now
                    with less luggage.

It is easy to set up the tripod on the ground as advertized. However, it is difficult to position a camera on the tripod: the tripod and the head both move slightly after the hands are off the camera.

The concept of the ZipShot tripod is intriguing and it does self assemble just as easily as advertised but even after it is together with the legs fully extended the tripod bows with the weight of even a fairly small mirrorless camera which makes precise positioning with the ball head almost impossible. Also the ball head doesn't have a quick release plate and you have to screw it onto the camera every time. Finally, despite its light weight the tripod is fairly long which limits the ability to just throw it into a bag. It is difficult to imagine what a good use for the tripod would really be.

This is no substitute for a 'real' tripod , but it is so light and compact that you will never leave it at home becuase it is too arduous to carry. It is very useful for taking self portraits when traveling , and let's face it no worse than hand held. It sets up /packs up in seconds. D200 with 18-70 zoom is about the most it will carry , but for a more compact lens or a point and shoot camera it is fine.

I bought this to take with me on a recent trip to London. It was light and convenient to carry around with me and super easy to flip out and use and also to fold up and put away quickly. With my point-and-shoot it was perfect. I couldn't really use it with my Nikon D300 though unless I only pointed the camera straight ahead. If I tried to take a photo with the lens (small 60mm) pointed up or down or any other direction, the ball head wasn't strong enough to hold it in place and it would slowly sink down. But it's great for what it's meant for.

I was in the market for extreme portability in a tripod for a small digital recorder. It had to be light and small. This is the perfect tripod for what I needed, but I had to sacrifice stability. It's light for a reason!

This tripod has a very novel construction, which is what makes it so light. But going along with the lightness is a lack of real support. It may hold a small P&S for a long exposure, but I would not put even a small DSLR on it for night shot. I bought it to hold a small camcorder (Kodak Playtouch or Flip), when I wanted to record myself standing and talking to the camera. The ZipShot would hold such a camera well, but the problem is that the tripod is not high enough. The image would be angled up to show my face, and I am 5'10" tall. I wish it were stronger/taller because would be absolutely great to travel wtih, but it is not functional for my needs.

Comments about Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod (Black):

Not that i expect such an sleek and travel light tripod to be sturdy, but i felt that it is too pricy for its functionality. I bought this primarily for a short trip since i could not fit my standard tripod in the suitcase :P
                                    1. Collapsable and light weight
                                    2. Height and tripod mount orientation is not adjustable.
                                    3. Advised only for point and shoot cameras. The mount starts tilting if you fix an SLR on top of it and may even topple with a strong gust of wind. So definitely a no-no for serious SLR photographers.
In short i would return this if i had the original packaging with me.

This is the easiest tripod I have ever owned. You take the two red ties off and the thing opens itself up every time. To me ease of use and the fast that it is so light mean that I will actually have the tripod with me and thus use it when taking pictures. No more lugging around a heavy tripod that takes minutes to set up and collapse. The zipshot opens in 3 seconds and closes in less than 10 seconds. This is a great accessory for any photographer - professional down to amateur point and shooter!

I haven't used it in the field yet, but it appears to be quite sturdy and would have no problem holding a smaller DSLR with a kit lens. (I wouldn't put a 5D with a telephoto on it.) I do a lot of backpacking, and being able to use a "real" tripod will be a treat. The only problem is you can't shorten the legs, but given the 11 oz weight, it's not much of a criticism.

Comments about Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod (Black):

I bought the ZipShot as a travel tripod, and it seems to perform well under situations that are not difficult. I just keep it in the car or my backpack and when I need a tripod it is there. It will even fit in a coat pocket comfortably.

When it folds, it folds to the size of a tabletop tripod. It is light. It takes literally 3 seconds to expand. The legs come together in a compact formation and can be used as a monopod as well.

Haven't experienced it, but if you ever end up in a situation that you were not supposed to drop a tripod and get caught, it will become a monopod instantly.

Keep in mind that it is what it is. It won't perform well with heavy loads, uneven surfaces and strong winds, but will save you in the occasions that you wished you had a tripod.

This tripod is extremely light and easy to pack which is the reason I bought it. On reasonably level ground and with no wind it allows for slow shutter speeds and night shots while I'm traveling. This is not what I'd call a stable platform in any way but with no wind it makes shots possible that otherwise wouldn't be.
