The Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount cameras is a bright and compact standard lens with precise manual focusing with a large rotation angle for precise control. The Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 is designed for medium and longer distances and provides high-performance when used wide open, and improves as the lens is stopped down. The lens construction controls flare and ghosting artifacts, resulting in a brilliant image with excellent contrast and natural color rendition. Combined with a DSLR with a 1.5 crop factor, the lens becomes a compact, lightweight 75mm portrait lens.

The new ZF.2 lenses are an enhanced version of ZF lenses. They feature an electronic interface (CPU) that enables support of all important camera operating modes such as shutter priority, aperture priority and programmed auto exposure or manual exposure settings. Photographers no longer have to set the parameters in the camera menu as the lens now transmits standard data such as focal length, speed and the aperture setting to the camera. This data can then be viewed in the EXIF data of each picture.

The ZF.2 lenses have a mechanical lock on the aperture ring to lock the aperture ring at the lowest setting and prevent unintentional adjustment while taking pictures.

For technical reasons, these lenses do not have a half-step aperture lock between the lowest (stop position) and the second lowest aperture setting. This guarantees reliable recognition of the automatic position. The lowest aperture on ZF.2 lenses is colored orange to emphasize the automatic position of the aperture ring.

Comments about Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:

As a headline specifies I am a regular photography enthusiast. I enjoy photography for joy it provides. If you would like to do tech comparison and you are a data digger. Well, this review is not for you. I would like to dedicate this review to folks who treat photography as an Art, and does not compare photos for sharpness or print quality under microscope. This review will avoid ANY data. I want to talk about the lens. Lets go to the subject. This lens was mastered for " manual focus " folks. There off you have to be familiar with " manual focus ". This lens MUST be avoided by photographers stuck on automatic focus. The focusing ring is tight and provides a some what of challenge to become familiar with. With enough practice you will not want to let it go and will be capable of snapping photographs of fast moving subjects as no tomorrow. You have to know how to focus. The ring is made intentionally tough to turn but it is to your advantage not to be consider a disadvantage. You will not be able to throw the image out of focus by foolish move. Zeiss had created a master piece. This lens is for ANY one who can afford it and enjoys photography. My main subjects are street photography, my little two year old daughter, people, and occasional professional shots I do for birthday parties. To enjoy this lens you have to be familiar with a manual focus. The color rendering is astonishing. I shot this lens in a middle of the day, by ANY possible location you can think about: day, night, evening, dawn, Sunrise, Sunset, streets, moving cars, beaches, forests, and water falls. Results are same and consistent. The closest word to describe will be astonishing. I obsoletely have no regrets in buying this lens. The colors are natural and so far give you the feeling of Old School Photography. The best thing you can do is to reset your camera. This lens requires no adjustments on my behalf except, depending on a subject, for occasional EV +/- . Bokhen is awesome. Quality/Sharpness of the images do not detoriate with aperture. I see no difference at F1.4 or F16. Lens does what it was created for. It keeps it consistent and delivers an outstanding performance. Quality: its build as an Abrams Tank: Strong, Solid Feel, All Metal. The only drawback is while the hood is screwed upside down you cannot focus with it. To me it never was a problem. Weight of the lens is about 380grams, or almost a pound. Well, also is not an issue to me. Might be an issue to some one who wants to care it around whole day long or has weak muscles. Also consider this: since I bought this lens I did not use any other. This might be only lens you will care about. Of course some of you might be having a little smirk on their faces. Remember, one camera and one lens was a standard 50-60 years ago. Photographers did not care a whole store of lenses. I do not need any other lens any more. I do not want to use my zoom lenses. The best I can describe my feeling as driving Rolls-Roys and all the sudden you have to switch for Toyota. Yes, Toyota is not bad but Roys gives you a totally different type of driving experience. My photography bag became significantly lighter. The only draw back I see for this lens is price. Its pricey. In the end of the day you get what you paid for. For its price, Zeiss delivers every penny of it. In conclusion I would like to say. This lens deliver for the money I had paid. It saves my time. You have to think before you press the shutter. I do not take half a dozen of images of same subject. I point and press. One shot, one kill. No need for multitude of images for same subject.

Comments about Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:

This lens has been a pleasure to use. I thought that I would miss the automatic zoom - and in certain cases it would have been nice to have - but overall I have gotten used to taking more time to frame my shots. Consequently, this has also led to shooting better pictures.

The color reproduction on this lens is the best out of any Nikon lens I have used. Bokeh is a little odd and the overall image is soft around 1.4, but bump it up to 1.8 and up and it looks amazing.I would definitely recommend this to anyone

Comments about Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:

This lens isn't going to appeal to everyone, but it's a wonderful tool and a classic lens. This lens doesn't tend to test well, but if you're into the look of your photographs instead of shooting brick walls and studying MTF charts, you might like it. The lens has a slight field curvature, which means the plane of focus bends toward the camera in the edges. This is more prominent when shooting at closer distances. If you use it right, it can be an advantage. For example, shooting a portrait close-up, it can help throw the background out of focus. For landscapes, it can actually help pull the foreground into focus. At longer distances, though, the effect is less prominent. And if you stop down to f/5.6 or smaller, it's less of an issue because of the depth of field.Wide-open, the lens is sharp but has lower contrast and a bit of color fringing. If you stop down 1-2 stops it becomes very sharp, but in general it's sharper and has higher contrast at longer distances. So the lens has something of a dual character. It can be very sharp at distance and stopped down, and somewhat more gentle close up and wide open. It can produce somewhat soft, dreamy portraits and stunningly sharp landscapes. It's a lens that requires some thought from the photographer. You need to focus manually and consider the lens' characteristics when you choose a focus point and aperture. But when used correctly, the results are stunning. These ZF lenses really are something special when it comes to color and contrast. And this lens is much better at handling flare and ghosting than the Nikon 50/1.4G. The build quality is exemplary and the focus ring is buttery smooth. The lenses are heavy, but I don't consider that a negative. Also, the metal lens hood is a thing of beauty, but don't lose it. The replacement is very pricey. The lens cap stinks, better to replace it with a Nikon one. This may not be the correct lens for photographers who shoot events or fast action (though I use mine for documentary work and photojournalism) but if you don't mind taking time to construct a photograph, it won't let you down.

Comments about Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:

This is my 2nd Zeiss ZF.2 lens after my purchase of the 28mm (which is an excellent lens by the way). I was hoping the 50mm would produce the same level of amazing quality as the 28mm especially shooting at wide open. The lens design and construction is very high quality, same as other Zeiss lens. But this 50mm lens does not perform any better than the Nikon f/1.4 at wide open or f/2. The color rendition is better in my opinion, however. It is great lens by any standard, but I think the Nikon f/1.4 with AF-S, it is a better choice for the $, plus AF.

Low light? No problem. This lens combines the fun of a vintage camera with the quality only provided by Zeiss. It's heavy and smooth and it creates high contrast, color rich images. Keep in mind that this is a manual lens. Some might find that difficult, but I found myself finding quick, clear focus after minutes of use. This should be a must have for any portrait photographer.

Comments about Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:

This lens has excellent optics and has a "solid" feel. It's a typical Zeiss with great corner to corner sharpness, beautiful bokeh and a smooth focus ring. This is the perfect lens for (static) children or wedding photography.

This lens is only manual focus, and thus has a much wider rotation than other AF/MF combo lenses; this greatly improves your ability to dial in focus. However, if you are shooting action, you will probably need AF/AF-S (Nikkor 50mm f/1.4).

I was waiting and waiting for AF from Zeiss, now I wish I hadn't waited :)

The most appealing thing to me about this lens is that the optics are apparently the same as the cp.2 compact prime cinema lenses, just without all the workflow bells and whistles and at a sixth of the price (!).

Throw a follow focus on there and you are living healthy.

Comments about Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:

The Zeiss reputation continues. Before buying this lens I had given up on ever achieving the same sharpness and contrast from my Nikon I have come expect from my Leica system. Now, I can finally utilize the massive files of the D800 to their fullest extent. This lens produces results heretofore unobtainable from a DSLR. There is a richness you cannot replicate, a sharpness you will not attain and a "feeling" I've only found from the finest German lenses.

Made in Japan by Cosina,.....not a real Zeiss lens,....It might not be the best idea to use with a nikon camera. Nikon lens 1.4 better option and has autofocus.

use it for model projects and travel

the coating and color is wonderful

this is not cheap lens, and no AF, however who cares, it's zeiss, nothing more you can complain about. I got this lens for my FM2N. I might keep it forever, my first zeiss.

Comments about Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:

This is the least expensive ZF lens but that is not reflected in the image quality. My copy produces great color and sharpness. With live view manual focusing is easy and accurate. It feels indestructable and is much smaller than comparative lenses with auto focus.

Comments about Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:

The lens is used as a prime lens on Panasonic AG-AF 100 M4/3 Cinematographic camera.
The lens is an excellent low light lens with exceptional optics, colour rendition and sharpness.
Difficulty to fit follow focus attachments due to the lenght of the lens
