i know a lot of us out here just have to have the "best". Vanguard really opened up my eyes with their alta pro 284. Over the last couple of months, i've tried 4 different, more expensive models from various manufacturers. Two from Manfrotto,(over $400) one from Giottos($390) and one from Gitzo ($900) all were lacking, especially the gitzo, for the price. ALL photography gear is way overpriced; everyone knows it. But just like fuel, we buy it anyway because they are tools that we use to put food on the table. Manfrotto, giottos, and ESPECIALLY Gitzo take advantage of us, but never deliver the quality for which we've paid so dearly. At [$], the alta Pro 284 is BETTER (note i didn't say comparable) than all the manfrottos, goittos and gitzo tripods in it's class, and it's considarably cheaper. It has all the features, and more, than all the other guys. it's also lighter than the others in its class. It's also the only tripod that didn't get returned to B+H. So if you're one of those guys looking at those thousand dollar Gitzos, save your money, get the Pro 284 from Vanguard. It'll change your life!!

Everything about this tripod seemed well designed and manufactured but for one thing - the leg locks were so small that they did not prevent the legs from twisting to an alarming degree. To claim that this tripod can handle an 18lb. load is way off - I wouldn't trust it with any combination heavier than a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens on an APS-C dSLR. I sent it back immediately.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This tripod is everything that I thought it would be. I love having the lateral arm for macro work. I wasn't planning on going for carbon fiber, but found this one to be a decent price with a weight and size that I wanted. Did I mention that I love the lateral arm?

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I photograph in the jungle with a 6.35 kg (14 lbs) of camera. I should use a heavier tripod (this one is recommended for 4 lbs and max of 18 lbs) but this tripod is the only with 7 degrees of motion that goes small enough to fit into carry-on luggage and is light for packing into the jungle. The leg locks hold really well. But, the leg locks can damage the carbon and after nearly 2 years of heavy work may shear them enough so the carbon legs break. But customer support is fantastic. Sent the legs back for repair and they sent me out a brand new box with a brand new tripod! If the weight difference isn't a big factor, I might recommend going to the aluminum legs for durability.

This tripod is an excellent value. The size and weight are excellent (it fits inside newly downsized airline carry-on luggage). And as for functionality, its legs are very smooth to deploy and retract. Could not be happier.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I started researching a new tripod because my old one was heavy and the connectors were starting to stick really badly, making it hard to use. I decided to invest the extra for a Carbon Fiber model because often the tripod is on my back for hours while hiking. As far as weight, this model didn't disappoint. It still feels very sturdy, though.

What lead me to Vanguard was the center column. It lets you get your camera into positions that are much more difficult to get into with a standard center column that only goes up and down. Other manufacturers have similar features, but the cost was all significantly more.

Everything about this tripod is well constructed.

The alta pro tripod and BBH 200 head were recommended to me by David Akoubian. And I've put this thing to the test! It's simply easy to use, life weight and the most functional tripod I own.

            Light and sturdy, does fine with a D7100 and a 300/F4 with a 1.4TC.
Twist locks are fast. The horizontal feature is great for macro.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I use the tripod for hiking-birding and have a slow 12 lbs camera-lens for that job. I started with the 263AT pro and tried it while touring for 20 days in the jungles of Costa Rica. The tripod was greatly abused. Where the 263AT leg attaches to the center mount, a piece of metal finally broke. The tripod was still functional. When I returned, I mailed it back to Vanguard, they replaced the leg, and mailed it back. No charge!

Since then I have upgraded to the slightly stronger 284CT pro, which I should have done from the start given my long lens weight. The 284CT is designed to hold more weight and where the leg piece broke the 284 has extra reinforcement.

The other reasons for upgrading to the 284CT was that its fold length is 20.4", 4" shorter than the 263AT. The 4" difference is critical, because now with the tripod mounted on my backpack, I can set the pack down without the tripod sticking out. For hiking, the tripod is also about a half pound lighter.

I am so happy I purchased this tripod! It is so lightweight. I enjoy the ease of setup and teardown as well as the many angles you can contort this into.

It supports my D800 with a 70-200 lens without any problems (not extending the center column).

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Just loving it. As a hobbyist I use this tripod for all my supported photography. It is very versatile and stays sturdy in every way I set it up with my heaviest gear so far (Nikon D7000 17-55mm 2.8 DX or 105mm 2.8 VR micro). And it can be set up in some really amazing angles! My main photography interests are - as you may have guessed - in landscape and macro. On occasion I also shoot wildlife and other moving subjects as sports or action as-well as portraits with it.

I mounted a Manfrotto 054 Magnesium Ball Head with Q5 Quick Release on it, while I am 5.75ft tall it covers my height (expanded center column) completely. (I even have to tiptoe a little). Since it is very light-weight I take it with me without worrying about additional weight on my backpack. It also fits into my suitcase w/o problems for traveling.

It is solid build and very easy and comfortable to use. Comparing it to its competitors it sports more features and accessories (i.e. Spiked / Rubber Feet). Furthermore my feeling is, that it is just a little more sophisticated than it's competitors. The center column i.e. is not just flip-able either at 0 or 90 degree, but can be set in any position you need. The bottom line is, that it gets you just more bang for the buck compared to it's direct competitors.

One thing to mention though is, that the bag that comes with the tripod, could be sized a little taller. The tripod with mounted head (see above) tightly fits into the bag. Since I only use the bag for storage and traveling (in suitcase or car) this is insignificant for me.

I intensively shopped for a new tripod before I decided to go with the Vanguard and I am very happy with my decision.

It is so versatile. I can use it from Macro to Landscape to Portrait photography. I even used it in my light painting photoshoot. Its very light since it is CF! I simply love it.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

i know a lot of us out here just have to have the "best".

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This tripod is used for all around projects. I occasionally mount my older 300 f/2.8 to it with no problems (although I'm not extended on the center column). My favorite feature is the flexibility of the legs and center column – great for getting close to my subjects without "shadowing" them. The little center hanging "hammock" is also a neat addition for holding lens caps, snacks, and rocks for stability. It's also great for macro shots of just about anything you could think of (the reversible center column is great for getting down really low). It's less than half the weight of my last tripod, just as stable, and so much more flexible operationally. Love it!My only complaint is that the carrying bag is too small for the tripod and head. I've solved this by using the bag that came with my aluminum tube / cloth "camp" chair. Fits great with a large head attached. Hmm, protect a $20 chair or a $550 tripod/head combo… sorry chair.

Great product. Well made, sturdy, comes with instruments and a bag. Instruction manual is very minimal but it's easy to figure it out. I also got SBH-250 for it and the combination works well. You can get some amazing angles with it and get down all the way to the ground.
