Not much to say that hasn't already been said about this little jewel. So I'll tell a bit about my style of shooting and perhaps that may help you decide what is best for you.I've shot film (35mm and Medium format), digital (full-frame and crop sensors), both Canon and Nikon, plus mirrorless, rangefinder, etc.I've owned many zooms including the 16-35, 17-40, 24-70, and 70-200 zooms but have sold my zooms and only use primes (which I've used on and off for the last 20 years). If you shoot primes and don't need or want the expensive f/1.2, f/1.4, or f/2, then this 24mm f/2.8 will please you. It's small, lightweight, affordable, uses 52mm filters, and is a great performer. If you are shooting full-frame (like me) the 24mm, 50mm, 85mm combo may be all you really need. For crop sensor DSLRs, the 24 will be more like a 36mm (which is a handy focal length as well and would work nice with a 35mm and 50mm).I prefer the 24mm prime over the more expensive and bulky 16-35 f/4 VR (which is a wonderful lens). While it doesn't zoom nor get as wide, it is just as sharp at 24mm. The wider shots tend to be too wide for my style and the big lenses are always contrary to my style of shooting.I like to keep my photography fairly simple so that the gear doesn't get in my way of creating images. Just my two cents.

This lens might, as other reviews have said, be great on film bodies. And it does feel well-built. But on my D90, on which it's effectively a 36mm or so lens, it consistently produced flat, dull images that lacked contrast and seemed slightly distorted. Grass on a field, for instance, had a persistent yellow tint through this 24mm; the same scenes looked more real through my newer 50mm 1.4g. And the geometry of certain objects seemed very slightly skewed... which might be ok for landscapes and non-critical architectural shots, but definitely not ok if people are in the picture.

On the plus side, the 24mm does focus quickly and accurately, and produces sharp images. It feels good in hand, if maybe a bit too small to cradle in the hand as you shoot. Solid build -- made in Japan.

My 50mm 1.4G lens is much slower to focus, but makes pictures that look more accurate and more vivid than those from this 24mm.

I will miss the expansive view of the shorter focal length. But rather than continue with this fixed 24mm, I'll settle for the also-mediocre images that the kit 18-105 lens produces.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I primarily use 24-70 or 35 1.4 for group shots but purchased this lens for when I do not have my 24-70 handy and need something a little bit wider than my 35 1.4mm. I have used this lens primarily for group images and receptions and have been happy with the results. Not the best lens in the bag but then again if I wanted it to be one of the best I would have purchase the 24 1.4mm but I don't use it enough to spend that kind of money on one. Bottom line is if you need a wider lens but not ultra wide for group shots and such this is a great lens but I would not want it to be my primary lens.

I know Zoom lenses are the preferred form of glass these days, but nothing compares to the 24mm f/2.8D fixed focal length. If you haven't shot one. Try it. I've been a working pro for almost 40 years. What was true in 1975 is true today. You need a 24mm in your case. In addition to the tack sharp 82 degree view per frame. You can stitch as many frames as you need to create unequaled panoramic's. It's a true classic that still delivers.

This lens is great. Reasonably sharp wide open and very little, if any, distortion. The aperture ring is definitely a plus if you like using manual lenses.

Great little lens. Sturdy and heavy. A little aberration due to the wide angle but great photos so far. It's sharp and pretty fast on my nikon Df. Don't regret buying it.

After renting this lens 3 times it was time to buy my own. Great for groups and when you're in tight spaces. The colors are saturated nicely and there is little distortion around the edges. It's a good distortion though.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I bought this lens in hopes of having a quick, sharp wide angle that would eventually carry over when I upgrade from my D90 to a full frame body.

I own the 50mm f/1.8D and the 85mm f/1.8D. Both of these lenses are of the same product line as this 24mm. I have been extremely satisfied by the quality of these two lenses over the past several years and expected the same performance from the 24mm.

Sadly, the 24mm did not match up. The photos were just not sharp. I took countless tests, used manual focus, and compared it with lenses of the same focal length that I rented but it consistently produced smudgy images. I ended up selling it after 2 years of trying to look past this issue.

The lens had a nice heft to it for it's size. Just enough weight to remind you it's no kit lens. Very quick autofocus. Manual focus ring was milky when adjusting. Sturdy construction of lens body but front focus ring was loose and would rattle.

All in all, I really wish I could have kept it. I wanted to make this lens work but I just couldn't look past the poor image quality for a lens of this caliber. The rattle didn't help either. I feel like the lens had so much more potential than I was seeing in my copy. It may have been that I had a dud but I'll never know.

Three stars because I still have faith that somewhere out there, there is a flawless copy of this lens that is making someone happy. If you can, find a copy of this lens and try it first before purchasing.
