I purchased this lens to use on my D80 with my primary intention of using it indoors and outdoors mostly as a walk about lens.
Indoors, I find this is a very nice length to work with on a DX camera. I also have the AF-S DX 35mm F1.8G which is a very nice lens but kept finding myself "running out of room" with it. At F2.8, I am able to get quite a few non-flash shots, though ISO will climb to 1600 on the D80 at times.
Outdoors, it is more than meeting my expectations as a walk about lens. Here also, the length is very comfortable to work with on a DX body and the lens exhibits the rich colors one associates with the AF-D lenses.
Focus is quick and accurate on my D80.
As a wide angle lens, don't expect lush bokeh here. That is not what this lens is all about. In fact, front-to-back is pretty sharp already at F2.8, getting sharper as one stops down though the difference in overall sharpness from F2.8 to say F8 is not as great as one might expect. You can get "acceptable" bokeh on close-ups.
If you are after lush bokeh look to the AF-S DX 35mm F1.8G or one of Nikons 50mm lenses. I personally have and prefer the AF 50mm F1.4D.

This is probably a great lens on other cameras, but definitely too soft for the D800e. With the large sensor the D800e and D800 have using this lens will result in really soft edges. In fact When I was looking over some of the images I took I found that only the middle portion of the photograph was in focus. The rest of the image turns out soft. If you like that affect then this is a great lens, but I like my images sharp so I'll be looking for a different wide angle lens for my D800e.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens to use as an everyday lens on my FX body. It's lightweight, very sharp, and focuses quickly. I needed a wider angle of view than the 50mm gave me and the 24mm is perfect for me. I have the 24-70mm zoom also and I realized I was almost always shooting at 24mm and decided I didn't need to carry around all the extra weight of that lens. I like the challenge of working with a fixed focal length lens - it makes me more attentive composing my shots.

Not much to say that hasn't already been said about this little jewel. So I'll tell a bit about my style of shooting and perhaps that may help you decide what is best for you.I've shot film (35mm and Medium format), digital (full-frame and crop sensors), both Canon and Nikon, plus mirrorless, rangefinder, etc.I've owned many zooms including the 16-35, 17-40, 24-70, and 70-200 zooms but have sold my zooms and only use primes (which I've used on and off for the last 20 years). If you shoot primes and don't need or want the expensive f/1.2, f/1.4, or f/2, then this 24mm f/2.8 will please you. It's small, lightweight, affordable, uses 52mm filters, and is a great performer. If you are shooting full-frame (like me) the 24mm, 50mm, 85mm combo may be all you really need. For crop sensor DSLRs, the 24 will be more like a 36mm (which is a handy focal length as well and would work nice with a 35mm and 50mm).I prefer the 24mm prime over the more expensive and bulky 16-35 f/4 VR (which is a wonderful lens). While it doesn't zoom nor get as wide, it is just as sharp at 24mm. The wider shots tend to be too wide for my style and the big lenses are always contrary to my style of shooting.I like to keep my photography fairly simple so that the gear doesn't get in my way of creating images. Just my two cents.

I bought this lens because I needed something to shoot some group portraits indoors in a fairly confined space. The lens performed admirably with only a few soft photos, which admittedly may have been user error.
The lens is very lightweight, compact, and reasonably sharp for a lens in this price range. The focus is pretty accurate by my estimations and it seems to focus well even in difficult lighting situations.
On an outdoor shoot I did encounter a significant amount of lens flare when shooting partially into the sun (duh), so that's worth mentioning.
Other than that it's a great little lens that I can pretty comfortably recommend.

If you are into fixed lenses, then this is a great lens to slap on your camera before headed out for some street photography or travel photography.
I use a Nikon D-7000 for travel/street photography partially because it is compact and not a huge burden to carry around on a day trip. Having said that I need a lens that has matching attributes. I did have the 50mm 1.8 fixed lens, but with a cropped sensor it was always a bit too tight.
I find that this lens gives me the compact design I was looking for with a great angle of view and tack sharp focus.

This lens is a great bang for your buck piece of equipment. I converted from a D90 to the D600 and needed a wide angle to go along with the 85mm f/1.4D and 50mm f/1.8D I was previously using with the crop sensor body. After a great conversation with Julia over there at the BH superstore (a must visit every time I'm in New York), I decided that the 24mm f/2.8D would be a great addition. I bought it, picked it up after staring at the conveyer belt thingy above head for a bit, and put it on the camera body.It never came off. During the day it really allowed me to take photos that put my subjects into perspective. It was awesome to use at the 9/11 memorial. At night, it worked very well in low light situations whether i was doing street photography or photographing my wife and myself at dinner. There were, at times, instances where the focusing was slow - a combination of my learning to use the new body and just getting to learn how the lens behaved. And yes, if I could have afforded the 24mm f/1.4G, I would have done it. But [$]< [$]is pretty compelling. And considering I still got the shots I wanted, I am very happy with the lens.

This lens is a gem. The lens is solidly made and has the classic screwdriver AFD focus. It is very fast to focus on my D700, has a short focus distance, shows good sharpness at most apertures 4 and above with relatively low distortion, especially compared to 24-xx zooms. The small size and low weight of this lens are also plusses, because they don't add much to the kit when the lens is included. There is not much to criticize: there is some vignetting wide open and the lens is not a bokeh specialist. Neither of these is a problem to me in my use.

I was using this lens on my D90 for years before I broke it because of a fall. It was (almost) no question, that I'll purchase one again. The new 28mm f1.8 came into my mind, but the price and the preferred focal length led me to by the 24mm. When I'm on holiday it stays on my cam most of the time. Love for landscape, indoor and even for portraits. Obviously there are better and newer wide angle lenses but concerning price/performance it is a winner.

I primarily bought this for widefield astrophotography and nighttime landscapes because of the hard infinity focus stop. Focusing more modern AF-S lenses on stars can be a pain since there's no hard infinity focus point.
At 2.8 the center is very sharp, with the edges suffering a bit. At f/4 it's really good. At f/5.6 its sharp across the whole field on a full frame camera. I'd say overall its quality is comparable to the Nikkor 24-70 2.8 at 24mm.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens in preparation for upgrading to an FX body. Needed something wide and fast for astrophotography landscapes. In the meantime, the results I am getting on my DX body are very satisfying (sharp) and I am enjoying having close to 50mm focal length for a trying my hand at a little street photography. Small size of the lens makes handling the camera a pleasure.
For it's size it's a weighty lens, but up to a point I've never seen weight as a negative. Rather, a nice weighty body and lens feels good in the hand and lends stability to composing a shot.
Best thing is this lens made me dig out my old F100 (to get an idea of true 24mm) which I have neglected due to limited time for developing and printing film these past few years.
