~90mm on a DX body. Extremely close focusing. I have used this to photograph small and
medium sized gem stones such as Quartz. The lens is very sharp at the focus distance at 1:1. The
only drawback I've noted are that even when I close down the f-stop to f16 or higher, the depth of
field remains minuscule at 1:1 from 3 feet away. This means it works best, as others have said,
with flat objects. I've noted that with a stone about 3" tall and 3" wide, and deep, only a slice of
the stone is in focus. On smaller stones, this slice becomes even smaller with say a 1" stone. It is
difficult to get a 1" stone totally in focus and still fill the frame. This being said, it's easy to work
with and works well with the SB-900 and a light box with 3 sided diffusion material and a
backdrop. Beware of backdrops made of cloth though as a sliver of the fabrics weave will be
sharp. White Foam-core makes an excellent flat background and adds some reflected light to the
object, which is useful with a translucent stone like Quartz and its variations. It's a good lens for
the money. It tends to seek a lot when auto focusing in low light, but with still objects, this isn't a
big deal. It's much cheaper than the 105mm Macro, and as I noted, on a DX camera, it's
equivalent to around 90mm. Overall it's a creative, fun lens, which I intend to experiment with a lot
more in the future, so these are only my initial reactions, and uses.

Very sharp and strong built, but very slow auto-focus and too short for moving subjects.

Comments about Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D Lens:

I am not a big fan of ultra-wide focal lengths, such as 12 or 14mm on full frame bodies. It's quite difficult to frame your subjects at those focal lengths. But this 20mm works perfectly on my Nikon D800 and D610.

Wide-open, it may not be the sharpest lens. Although, it performs very decently. At f/4 and beyond, this lens rocks!! The intended use for this lens is landscapes, and who shoots landscapes at f/2.8 any way?

The lens is very light-weight, small in size to fit any pocket.
AF is not the quickest or the quietest, as it is 20-year old D lens, but it's not bad at all, and, quite accurate as well. I don't ever miss any shots, to be honest.

Vignetting is quite pronounced, especially at large apertures. But I am not too bothered by it. And if you are, it's easy to correct in post-processing.

All in all, an excellent lens, at a reasonable price. Another winner from Nikon! If you are on the fence, just buy it. I love mine.

Comments about Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D Lens:

I have used this lens primarily for macro photography, often 1:1, as well as occasionally for landscapes. The results from using this lens are lovely, sharp images. I was unaware (the fault is mine alone) that my D3100 would not support the autofocus feature of this lens, so I was initially a bit disappointed. After researching the issue, I found there are a number of models without the capability to autofocus with this lens. Not a big deal, I just manually focus it, and it works fine, and takes equally beautiful pictures!

Comments about Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D Lens:

I bought it for macro photography in museums. I need something that would focus close to the object. Small objects are often places in cabinets inches away from the glass. This is perfect. Beautiful sharpness. Great general 60mm lens as well. I always loved my 80 when shooting film. When I moved to the D800 I wanted something to cover those portrait moments. This lens gives me a compromise to cover both the 50 and the 80 range without having to carry multiple lenses. So it was better than a 50 macro for me.

While not as versatile a micro lens as Nikon's other offerings, it's a great lens for copying slides. Also makes a fine standard lens as long as you don't need the speed of an f/1.4 or 1.8.

Comments about Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D Lens:

I bought this lens over 10 years ago to use on my F100, and was very happy using it with film. I then upgraded to a D200, and then again recently to a D800. This lens is incredibly sharp on all of them, rendering fine detail from infinity down to 1:1 on prints as large as 30x40. I do a lot of industrial product photography, and for anything smaller in size than a coffee cup, I invariably end up using this lens.

The tradeoff for all that sharpness is the slow (but accurate) autofocus, which can take some getting used to. It also has a quirky telescoping front element that makes the AF quite loud, even for a "D" lens. If you plan to use this for shooting video, make sure you use an external microphone.

I almost always use manual focus with this lens: the significant moving mass of the glass+metal, along with the large focusing ring, provides a steady focus control in MF.

The front element is recessed quite a bit. This no doubt improves the contrast considerably, but it makes cleaning rather difficult.

Those issues aside, it's the image that counts, and this lens delivers incredibly sharp, detailed pictures every time. It's well worth the price you pay for it. If I lost or broke it, I'd buy it again.

Comments about Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D Lens:

This lens is great! I've got 2 of them and use them for product and nature shots when I want to get in close and I'm not worried about the subject moving. Switching from auto focus to manual is a breeze with an easy to feel ring that simply clicks over to change the mode. AF is quite fast and very accurate. Just paired it with my d800 and did find some purple CA on flowers and animals in bright light when the lens was wide open. Very easy to fix in light room and since it didn't affect the workflow for more than 15 seconds and definitely didn't have any detriment to the image, I don't really worry about it. I like the heft as it has a pro feel to it. Definitely a great lens to have. The versatility makes it preferable over a non-macro 50mm. That's just me because I like 1:1. Wish it were less expensive but you get what you pay for with glass most of the time.

I use this lens in my work as a forensic investigtor to take close up shots that document my observations. This lens has a real short working distance which helps in tight places. It works nice with my D90. no exposure issues. I sometimes augment this lense with the R1C1 flash for an absolutly perfect shot.

Comments about Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D Lens:

I got myself Nikkor 60mm for my Nikon D7000. Brilliant and really sharp image. Focuses well on close object and acts as almost 105mm focal lenght on D7000 body.
Slightly slow focusing for really close object but not a problem for me.

This lens is a tremendous improvement over earlier versions (in my case-1970-1984 +/-) complete unto itself ie no extension tube needed for most closeups. Extraordinarily sharp and without distortion.
