Product Highlights
  • Fast f/2.8-4 Aperture
  • 4x Zoom Range
  • Minimum Focus Distance 8.7"
  • Maximum Magnification Ratio 1:2.7
  • Hyper Sonic Motor is Quiet and Fast

The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens is a large-aperture lens with a maximum f/stop of f/2.8 in wide angle setting. The large zoom range of this 4x zoom lens (equivalent range of approx. 25.5-105mm when used with a Sony digital SLR camera) makes it ideal as an everyday large-aperture lens. In addition, the minimum focus distance of 8.7" along with the maximum magnification of 1:2.7 also makes the lens perfect for close-up photography.

The lens' Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a quiet and high-speed auto focus, while its rounded, seven-blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur when shooting at wide apertures. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.

DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.

Note! Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or for any digital SLR camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size

DC lenses are designed for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size chips

I recomend this as an excellent replacement over the lens kit. Fast focus (Ultrasonic motor), good image quality.

I planed for a time to buy a DSLR around 1k$ price. I liked the Canon t2i and Sony A55.
I have tried both with the kit lenses and I loved the Sony tilt screen, but the lens was slow focusing.
    I opted to finally buy a Sony A55 body with a Third party ultra-sonic motor => Sigma17-70.

The lens focuses fast, my gues is about 0.5seconds.
Image quality is perfect for my taste.
I have tried on a soccer game, and is prety usefull, I would have love-it to go to 100-150mm though.

What I like less is moving focusing ring while in autofocus. If your finger is on the ring, you will hear a high pitch, while the lens motor tries to move the ring.

Lens is incredible: well built, great OS, great clarity, silent and fast auto focus.

However, there are a few drawbacks that are making me return this lens: very tight fit on camera, focus ring is very loose, and worst of all it's auto focus is off. I had heard that the lens suffered from front-focus on Canons, turns out it does on Sony Alphas as well.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:

So far this one that is coming will be my third replacement. The first lens I received would not give the same exposure twice. The second one just chatters and does not focus most of the time. When it does focus it takes at least 30 seconds. I am just grateful I made my purchase at B&H Photo. They have been very gracious at exchanging the lens. I really want this lens to work on my Sony a57. Wish me luck.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:

The lack of sharp focus on the corners is dispointing for me. This lens is not for me at all. However I must admit that the results are nice for subjects placed on the center or the frame. It does nicely with macro shots of flowers and other tridimentional subjects, when the bokeh is working for, not against you. Likewise, in portraits it is very useful and you can get outstanding shots (it is one stop faster than the average zooms of its category). So if you don't care for crisp definition corner to corner, the lens may please you for a very reasonable price. Another good point is the HSM (auto-focus motor), very quiet and acurate.

It has been my walkaround for my most recent trip. I normally use a 50mm fixed or the kit lens. This is a huge improvement and the price was great. I have taken night photos, long exposures, sunsets, landscapes, and some architectural photographs.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:

I'm a Sony NEX user, I have an LA-EA2 adapter and intended to use this lens as a good quality, relatively fast, general purpose zoom. It was supposed to be a substitute for my old manual Minolta MD 35-70/3.5 zoom. I was willing to sacrifice weight and size for better image quality and good AF. Unfortunately this lens failed in a number of ways to be a viable option. I compared this Sigma against Minolta at 35mm and 70mm, both lenses fully open - Minolta at f/3.5, Sigma at f/3.5-4.0. I used manual focusing and tripod, shooting at ISO 100 to avoid any other factors. Beyond a shadow of doubt, Sigma is significantly lacking in resolution at both FL -- it's clearly visible at pixel level and even on large screen TV. Secondly, Sigma's AF is very unreliable, it can front-focus or back-focus. I wasn't able to shoot a shiny china set with Sigma, probably due to reflections, every shot came out back-focused. In other situations the lens prefers front-focusing. Sometimes it's dead on, but who wants a loose cannon? :-)Thirdly, I don't know if that's due to the lens or semi-transparent Sony mirror, but every shot with Sigma required 2x (1 stop) longer exposure compared to Minolta. That's a huge difference.Fourthly, this lens has more vignetting than lowly Minolta.Fifthly, bokeh is 'busy', far worse than smooth Minolta's bokeh. And finally, though CA isn't very bad, it's still more than I would expect from a modern lens. One thing I liked though, the flare resistance is pretty good, I didn't have any difficulties shooting against bright lights.I didn't test macro capabilities, simply because this lens requires a tripod for that, and I don't find tripod mounted macros interesting -- when shooting living things you need a good manual macro lens and use focus peaking. Sigma is not well suited for that and I already have an excellent manual macro lens with much better resolution. The lens sharpness does get better when lens is closed 1-2 stops to f/5.6-8.0, but I doubt anybody would be happy with a big and heavy and at the same time slow lens with unreliable AF. So, though, I bought it quite cheaply, it goes back as I find it useless for my purposes.

On my APS sized sensors, this lens is wide enough for group shots, long enough for portraits and it's reasonably fast. Focus is great and the HSM is super quiet. Just a bit snug the first time or two I mounted the lens to the body, but that was it.

very versatile lens. good for landscapes and indoor shots with flash. really impressed with close focus/macro capabilities. i have gotten some very sharp flower and insect shots with it. i have been using my dedicated macro less often since i got this lens. i heard that colors weren't as sharp but I haven't noticed that at all. sometimes in low light it will hunt for focus. in normal conditions i have had no problem with speed or accuracy of focus. i think it's a great step up from the kit lens and a good value. especially if you are unsure if you really need a dedicated macro lense. this one might be good enough.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:

Bought this lens before the price hike - paid 350 new. For the money, (even after the price increase I would think), is a great lens, way better than any kit lens. Very sharp throughout, lets in a good amount of light, useful macro at all ranges, very light. The range is satisfactory for walk arround: the wide angle is sweet and the tele, although not bringing you telescope close, is adequate for anything but wild life.

Had some concerns regarding sigma build quality but mine works great and failed to break after extensive use in all sort of conditions without babying it. It has a very mild decentering deffect at wide open, softer right upper corner visible only when shoting a brick wall and looking at enlarged shots but unnoticeable on field shots.

Not my favorite lens - involves little compromises, obviously the quality does not match expensive primes- but most usefull, stays pretty much glued to my A200 and goes on vacation everytime I go! (along with a M50 1.7 and a M100-200 or 70-210 makes for a good quality kit - better quality immages than a 18-250- light and cheap enough so that I don't sweat if it gets stolen)
