The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens is a large-aperture lens with a maximum f/stop of f/2.8 in wide angle setting. The large zoom range of this 4x zoom lens (equivalent range of approx. 27-112mm when used with a Nikon digital SLR camera with an APS-C size chip) makes it ideal as an everyday large-aperture lens. In addition, the minimum focus distance of 8.7" along with the maximum magnification of 1:2.7 also makes the lens perfect for close-up photography.

Optical Stabilization (OS) anti-shake technology allows you to use shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible, without motion blur. This anti-shake technology, along with the fast f/2.8 to 4 aperture, makes this lens perfect for shooting in low light without a tripod.

The lens' Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a quiet and high-speed auto focus, while its rounded, seven-blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur when shooting at wide apertures. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.

DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras with an APS-C size chip. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.

Note! Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or for any digital SLR camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size, e.g. Canon 1D series

The Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4 DC macro zoom lens with HSM is a nice lens choice for making good photographic images in the normal range of focal lengths (17- 70 mm). I wanted a normal zoom lens that was at least one f-stop faster than the Nikon kit lens and the Nikkor alternatives are too pricey for my budget. Before purchasing this Sigma lens I struggled with the decision to spend additional money for Sigma's 17 – 50 mm f/2.8 lens, or this lens. They are both nice lenses and I made my decision after I realized that there is only a 2/3 f-stop penalty at 50 mm, no penalty at 17mm, and with this lens you get a wider zoom range. I have only owned the lens for two weeks and so far I don't regret buying a Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4 lens. It takes nice photos, focuses fast, and has optical stabilization. Now for a few minor annoyances and these are minor because overall Sigma makes nice, easy to use lenses. The lens is heavy, it does not have a lens mounting gasket, and the zoom ring is stiff while the manual focus ring is touchy. One other annoyance, for some reason the lens metadata shows that optical stabilization is turned on regardless of the lens OS switch position. Optical stabilization seems to be working correctly though and all other lens metadata seems correct. I hope this snapshot of information helps you decide whether this lens would be right for you. I expect to get many years of nice photos from mine. Cheers.

I struggled with 3 or 4 stars because this lens is not really bad but I ultimately decided that it doesn't perform in the key areas that would have set it apart. It is soft wide open so for me that is a deal breaker in itself. AF is average at best and OS is decent but not as good as Nikon's VR. When compared to the Nikon 16-85mm it really is no contest. The 16-85 has more range on both ends, AF is much better, it's quieter, and VR is better. The 17-70 image quality is decent as long as you stop down, but again, that defeats the purpose of choosing this over the others. I also didn't find the Macro to be anything worth using. While this isn't a bad lens, there are just better options out there. If you need f2.8, get the Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 18-50. Otherwise, I would recommend the 16-85mmVR or even the 18-105mmVR Nikkors.

This is a great all around lens. The 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM | C is lighter but I really didn't have a problem with the weight.

I used this lens right out of the box to photo an event. Photos turned out awesome and were used in a newspaper article about the event.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

After reading quite a few reviews of this lens I took a chance and ordered one. I had to overcome a longstanding prejudice against Sigma lenses. However, after uploading the photos I took yesterday I was immediately impressed with the clarity, contrast and sharpness of the images. This lens is well worth the price. The cost was less than what it would have cost me to recalibrate my Nikon 2.8 lens. I'm very pleased and will probably leave it on my Nikon body 90 percent of the time.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

First of all, I must say great customer service by B & H. I received the product exactly on time and as described. But the lens had a lot of difficulty focusing in all settings and situations. I have it paired with Nikon D7000. It would jiggle back and forth not able to lock in. I live in LA but happened to have a business trip to NY so I contacted them to see if I can bring it and exchange for a new one. No problem I was told. When I got there they agreed and exchanged with a new one. Amazingly, the new one had the same problem. They recommended that I take it to the Nikon specialist counter upstairs, who agreed that it was faulty. Two in a row! Because of all the positive reviews and great price due to rebate, I wanted to give it one more try. Again they promptly exchanged with a new one. This one's focusing was smooth, precise, and fast. What a difference. I have read other reviews about the focusing problems paired with a Nikon. If you experience this problem don't hesitate to return it and exchange it. I haven't done an extensive test so won't comment on it. One thing to note is that it's large and heavy.

Good apature and zoom range. The first one I received did not auto focus correctly, however B&H quickly exchanged it and the second one works fine. The only negatives I would say are the reversed opperation of the zoom ring compaired to Nikon and apparent lack of quallity control. I have the Nikon 18-200 and wanted a lens with a little more speed. I found that most of my pictures were taken in the wider ranges (mostly landscape) and the Sigma gives you a little more at the wide angle end. Have not done any real hiking with it yet,but have not noticed any tendency for lens creep which the Nikon 18-200 does have. Also has nice macro capabalities. Seems to be durable construction. Has smooth operation. Would give it 5 stars if I haden't had the problem with the first lens.

I had high hopes given the specs and reviews. But the autofocus was just so exceedingly slow that I had to return it. It just would take forever to lock on to anything, particularly in low light. I returned it and got the 18-200 3.5-5.6 which despite being a slower lens, focuses much much quicker than this Sigma.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

I have bought from B & H before. As usual, their shipping was very quick, and the lens arrived with no damage whatsoever.
I am a hobbyist, and wanted a good walk around lens for travel, so I could avoid frequent lens changing. My wife bought it for me as a Christmas present.
The finish on the lens is very good, and I really like the metal mount.
I had no problems mounting it to my Nikon D90. I am really happy with the performance of this lens, particularly in very low light situations. Recently I needed to take some pictures in a mall parking lot for record purposes. I did not want to use flash because of unwanted reflections. I upped the ISO from 200 to 800 and was able to hand-hold several shots in conditions where I was not expecting to get good results. The images I was able to make were very satisfactory for my intended purpose.
In other shooting situations I have found the lens to be very satisfactory, and certainly sharp enough for the 8 X 12 prints I make.
The only minus point I could find, and I knew this before purchasing the lens, is the zoom ring works in the opposite direction from a Nikon lens. For the price paid for this lens that is a minor consideration.
While it is not a true macro, the close focussing does allow for some interesting images.
I certainly would recommend this lens to others and without any reservation I would recommend B & H for their wonderful service.

I bought this lens as a replacement for my old and standard packaged lenses as it gives me the wide range from 17-70mm with much more speed for the sports/action shots I've become known for around town. The AF is fast and tracking quite accurate for moving subjects. Not as solid as my Nikkor ED 80-200mm f2.8 but I could have easily paid 4x more for the Nikon equivalent. Exceptionally great price for an exceptionally good lens.

If you could get it for less then it is an excellent buy. The lens built seems to be very solid, zoom movement is very smooth, finish of the lens in detail has no flaw. Pictures taken with this lens are sharp, close to fix focal lens, and also close to Nikon ED zoom lens. In normal (non-pro) use, the difference could be hard to distinguish compared to much more expensive lenses.

Paired this lens with Nikon D7000 due to many positive reviews and specs. But wasn't at all happy with its performance. The focusing was extremely poor, slow and inaccurate. Tried many different settings and situations but it consistently struggled to lock in and when it did and the camera fired away it was often not focused. Just to make sure, I dragged out my 17 year old Sigma zoom and it snapped into focus. so I'm convinced it must be defective. I will exchange it for another copy in the hope the performance meets expectations and all the positive reviews.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

I purchased this lens to go along with my 35mm for my Nikon D5100 and I am so glad I did! The 35mm is great, and this lens picks up where it lacks a bit. I can get a very wide view now, it's fast, well built and has the added bonus of 4X zoom! I have been able to capture images from snowflakes to family portraits, very happy with this new addition.

I've had this lens for only a few days, but it's clearly a kit lens replacer. It is well built, both the AF and image stabilization work well, and is compact. The Images are very sharp. It does not front or back focus yet on my D7000

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

This is my all-around lens - it does everything I need it to. From macro to landscape, family gatherings to portrait, this lens is the right fit for what I do. It is heavy - rock solid construction; some people may not like the weight, but I do. Images are very sharp; focus is spot on. The fast 2.8 (at 17mm) is great for low-light shooting. My only issue has been when I shoot at 17mm using a circular polarizer - you get the filter ring at the bottom corners of the image.

Well I will keep my old one. Sigma 17-70mm OS HSM lens does not focus properly. I have check it with my both Nikon body cameras and it just fail to
focus. On next day have send back to B&H. Thank B&H for excellent return policy!

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

I had high hopes for this lens with my D7000. After studying many reviews, I chose the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 over the Nikon 16-85 f/3.5-5.6 because of the faster aperture. The autofocus had trouble locking on subjects even in bright sun light, pictures were out of focus, and those the were were not sharp. I suppose I got a bad copy. I returned it and bought a used Nikon 16-85.
