The VT is a simple to operate camcorder with "above average" sound quality. I noticed that the VT gets many mixed reviews online and I honestly think that a lot of it is because the user guide is so minimal-not to mention how small it is to read. I have downloaded the user guide from the internet which came in PDF format, that allowed me to see it without going blind. Now for the details: You need to connect the headphones after you turn on the VT, and not after you record cause you will not hear the recorded audio in both sides. Many costumers thought that that is because one of the mics is a defect, so the VT records only in mono. I wish Alesis would also tell us that you have to transfer files to iMovie using only the original size, or the program will crash..even Apple could not figure this out, but that should be Alesis job to print on the VT user guide.I cannot complainn about the VT overall quality, keeping in mind that it is a very simple interface to manage. I also thought that the VT's construction is rather sturdy, but the ultralight weight of this camcorder could raises some questions regarding it's overall street price, which should be lower. All in all I got what I need: easy drag and drop so I can post my playing on Youtube with no rippers or converters, while the sound is better than my older camcorder. Alesis really sacrificed their name and reputation because of this product and that's a shame.

I'm almost certain the one I received is a return; although it had all the accessories, an undamaged box, and plastic wrapping on the camera itself, the LCD has at least two scratches. They're not deep, but I'm definitely not the first user. Hardly a dealbreaker at this price, though, and besides the location of the SD card slot (an open slot on the bottom as opposed to inside the battery compartment) that's honestly my only complaint about the design. The buttons have a good, satisfying click and I like the rubberized texture on the front of the device.
Even with the battery in, it's extremely lightweight. We're talking ounces; it's lighter than my Cybershot and even lighter than my phone. The heft comes from the grip, easily the best of the included accessories, practically worth the price of admission. It's a solid metal, rubberized grip with a tripod screw on the top and standard mic stand mount on the bottom. It's exactly what I was looking for and I thought I was going to have to make one.
The included software is Arcsoft MediaImpression 2.0, which I can't give any real commentary on because I'm using Linux.
So, worth it? Well, you can actually do a lot worse as far as standard definition shoot 'n' share cameras go, but of course it doesn't hold a candle to the Kodak Zi10 PlayTouch or the Zoom Q3/HD. The accessories (like the grip) are nice, but I can't really recommend it on the power of that. In the end, it gets a cautious recommendation. I don't dislike it.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack Handheld Audio and Video Recorder:

I bought the camera to do videos of my great grandchildren. Upon doing so I found out that it works well in normal lighting in the house but outside in the sun and shade the quality went way down. One of my great granddaughters love to perform and upon showing her the video she asked if I could turn up the sound, guess what, the answer is no. You can bearly hear any sound when you play back. If you were at a rock concert with 90 or more decibels you would probably be okay otherwise forget it if the sound is normal. Playing back on the computer the sound is okay.
Still pictures are awful, not fit for anything. I can not believe any one would pay more than I did for this item. A good idea that needs alot of work.

It was well priced but the quality reflects in that price. Very low quality video. Buttons are flimsy and students have difficulty getting it to turn off. I have a Flip Camera that I have my students use for projects etc. This was a less expensive alternative since Flip cams are out of production. Save your money.
It did have a nice handle accessory that I will use with other cameras.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack Handheld Audio and Video Recorder:

I wasn't expecting this to replace my DSLR, my portable audio recorder, nor was I expecting it to capture any sort of decent video. And man, my expectations were not exceeded, they were met!The audio is dreadfully bad, with a huge bump around 1-2k. Someone didn't research the equal loudness curve! It's also incredibly lacking in the low end, I literally had to EQ +12DB at 100HZ with a wide bellcurve to get any low end, as well I had to drop it about 6DB at 1.2k with a wide bellcurve, too. Then there's the terrible high pitched squeal it likes to emit when you record any audio. Noise reduction will reduce this problem, though you'll need to add an incredibly tight band EQ at the frequency of the shrill as well as a low pass filter around 16k to get rid of it.The video is rubbish, too. It's very noisy in situations that I would not consider low light, and it's only standard definition.Despite all of these drawbacks, I'm okay with it! I bought it for those situations where a video note will help with what I'm doing. When I'm doing field recording, something in the studio, or wherever, sometimes a video has more utility than a photo, and my DSLR doesn't have video capabilities. So, this thing will fill that void, for now. You're not going to get good audio with this, even if you're an audio engineer (like me!) you have to mutate the raw audio to make it sound passable. The video can be watched, you can make out what's happening in front of it, that's about it. It's not very good, but I didn't expect it to be, and I don't need it to be. For $, I'm happy with it.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack Handheld Audio and Video Recorder:

When I first got it I was impressed with the video quality even though many were critical of it. It's not high quality but it's much better than some of the demos I saw on Youtube. It comes with a carrying case and a really nice screw-in mount so you can hold it with the mount or screw or screw the mount on to a standard microphone stand. The screw size the mount uses to attach to the camera is the same as those found on standard camera Tri-pods making it very handy and a good idea because you can either use it with a Tri-pod or if you don't have one, a Microphone stand. Some complained that you couldn't record audio only and had to record video too. Their feeling was that there should be an "Audio Recording Only" option. Turns out that there is. You just need to download the firmware update to get this. I have not done it yet. The update can only be applied using a Windows computer so if you don't have one and need the update you will have to find a friend that does.Speaking of firmware. It's not obvious what version of firmware *is* running. (I was trying to check that). It would have been helpful if an information screen was also provided where you could see all system parameters, including batter life and available card memory. You can see these though in the main display though so it's not that big of a deal. The Youtube demo I watched demonstrated the audio quality. The music in the demonstration was pretty loud so I didn't expect distortion. However on the High and Medium setting if you are trying to record a live band you will get some distortion. It wasn't too bad on the medium setting. I am guessing it should be better on the lower setting but as yet I have not had a chance to test that setting. The battery seems to hold a charge really well. It lasts for quite some time when recording too. Some mentioned not being able to find the correct replacement battery very easily. I did some searches and found similar batteries but couldn't say whether or not they would fit. So this may turn out to be an issue when I finally need a replacement battery. You will want to check into this further if you plan on making sure you have some spare batteries.Charging the battery was pretty quick. It seems to hold the charge for several days if it's not being used. They also include a USB cable and a disk for Windows users. You don't need the disk for Macintosh computers. The buttons are a little awkward to use but remember this is a one-touch camera. It delivers ok on being able to record quickly once it powers on.When plugging it into your computer to upload your video it always asks if you want to use it in media mode which means you can use it as a SD Card reader if you have other devices that have SD cards and you don't want to unplug it to copy data from other cards. Still it would be nice if you could set it to default to your preferred mode instead of having to set it every time you plug it into a computer. This is a tradeoff of having a simple set of controls though as stated before it's a one touch record device so the controls are very minimal. There is no Image Stabilization. This is not a problem on a Mac as you can process video on a Mac and add stabilization later. The zoom is not great once you are zoomed in. The quality is pretty grainy. It's likely though that someone buying this would be placing it somewhere to get a good stereo image and just leaving it so I don't think many would use the zoom unless they want a tighter shot. I also noted that many complained about the LCD screen looking as if it was cloudy or scratched. I found that there was a protective plastic film on the LCD which can be removed. Once removed, the LCD is very shiny with a mirror-like glossy finish. So I am guessing they didn't realize the screen protector was on there and they could have easily removed it.The headphone jack is in an awkward place for my tastes. The location causes the headphone cable to get in the way when I am using it in handheld mode. Not such a problem when it's merely sitting on a stand recording though.I got it during a one day special that BH Photo Video was running for [$] (not including tax), and free shipping. I think the Video Track is worth probably about $50 max so I think I got a good value. If it were $100 then using my iPhone with the Tascam Microphone and the PCM Recorder software Tascam makes for their Mic would be a better option. However having a one-touch device I can just throw in my bag and pull out, hit a button to power it on, then the record button and I am recording is a nice convenience. I also hate tying up my iPhone during recording. There are other recorders at around $100 that would be better for recording band rehearsals or music events but for around the [$]I paid - I am happy. One last thing: Lower down on this form I have four choices; Casual User, Video Enthusiast, Semi-pro Videographer, Pro Videographer. These choices do not apply as I bought it for the audio recording function. I am a professional musician and just need something to record rehearsals. So none of the choices apply really. So I chose Pro Videographer but I doubt anyone would buy this for the video quality. Though as I stated before it's not bad but certainly do not buy it if you are looking for something with HD quality video as there are better movie cameras.

Quicktime is not my choice but it is only way to record vedio. Wav is not my choice and Alesis audio recorder saves in mp3... handy which is not the the discription I would use to describe this unit. It would get no stars had i paid list price and i would have returned it. However B&H had a $??? price. Quality a 3 on a 1~10 scale for audio; vedio is worse. When I need to record something and don't need hi fidelity I will use this. Vedio forget about it. It's Poor. Thanks for the great price xx% off list Tom

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack Handheld Audio and Video Recorder:

I just received the product a week ago and used it for a short trip to Europe.
Given its price, the unit yielded interesting results.
The audio is very good, very suitable for field recording. Although the bandwidth and characteristics of the microphones and associated electronics are not known, the audio revealed surprinsingly good performance.
Recording for voice and general ambience sound was very good, on par with professional entry-level condenser mic recordings.
I have yet to run an analysis on the audio signal.
The stereo audio channel speration was good.

The video was where I really got surprised. Given some bad reviews on this site and given the poor specs on tne video part, I was expecting absolutely terrible preformance. In fact the results were very good. Outside shots (I filmed an outdoor wedding party) were excellent. The video was stable and the resolution was good enough for posting on line. I converted the videos into a more usable mp4 format. Even on a 13 inch computer screen the quality was very good. I have yet to try on a large HD display where I think we will see the limitations of the video (especially due to low resolution).
I also took some video footage during an indoor wedding reception and there again, I was pleasantly surprised. The picture quality was good. There was a loss in colors in low light which was to be expected.
I did not use the handle provided to shoot pics and videos with the unit. Yet, the video image was very stable.

The display lCD screen is very small but usable.
                    Its quality is passable.
I did not record video with audio headphones on. I don't know if those work in that configuration.
Some have expressed doubts on this.

In conclusion, this product is very good for the price. The audio part can be used to record mid-range sounds (voice especially) and general ambiences. The video can be used as control device for concerts, public events or to document on the go family events for posting on the web and on social media.

I will probably buy a second unit for non-professional applications.

This is a great product and well worth the money! Don't believe the reviews, the video might not be HD but it is certainly good enough for most uses. I bought this for recording meetings, trainings and classes instead of a basic audeo recorder- I'm glad I did! The audeo isn't quite as good as I expected, but it is intended for concerts and loud enviroments. Despite this it is still more than adequate for my use, and I am very pleased with my purchase. If I lost or broke it, I would buy it again! One last note: the menus could be a little easier to navigate (add a button or two guys!), but you get use to it with practice!

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack Handheld Audio and Video Recorder:

I'm not much of a videographer. My Canon 7D has video capability and so far I have never used it. But when I went to B&H for a new digital voice recorder, I was shocked to find a digital/video recorder for $[$]. It comes with a D card (worth at least $5). Batteries (another $3) and a nice soft case (possibly $3 to $5). Even if I didn't want or need it, I had to have it. I brought it home, played with for a few minutes and decided it should always sit in my camera bag - just in case. Leap ahead a couple of weeks and I'm present for an impromptu press conference with the great Sir Stirling Moss (race car driver). I reached in my pocket and pulled out this little recorder and "taped" the whole thing. The image quality is pretty good (computer-quality) and the sound quality is very good (wave file quality). The bargain of the year - maybe the century.

The video is not so good, but we all knew that. The price we got it at was insanely low. Audio is not bad, though with the battery only last about 4 hours in audio only mode, having one battery is not good enough. I was also not able to find a replacement battery though I have ordered something Nokia that is supposed to work. The audio it records is decent for weddings field recording. However, there is a high squeak that you can get rid of by using a hi-cut filter EQ in the post.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack Handheld Audio and Video Recorder:

I've used this unit to record jams and concerts. The audio quality is excellent and the video quality is decent. Photo quality is okay if you're in a well-lit area. I've bought one as a gift and one for myself. I'll probably buy another to keep as a backup. The heavy rubberized grip that came with it was a nice surprise. I like that it charges via USB. Battery life is excellent. It is light and compact - perfect to keep in a backpack or coat pocket for spur-of-the-moment recording. In Video Mode, audio and video will get out of sync on long recordings. This problem might be alleviated by putting a really fast SD card in it. Stopping and re-starting every few minutes when recording video is a good idea. Audio-only recordings can be near-perfect if you have microphone level and placement right. The VideoTrack tends to "miss-out" occasionally when playing back a recording through it. No problems were noticeable in files that have been transferred to computer. Be sure to update to the latest firmware if Audio-Only mode doesn't show up when you first turn it on.

I would not have paid what this was selling for when first released, but B&H had a more than terrific deal I couldn't pass up. The picture is average for a non-HD device; you can get better video from most modern smart phones. The sound is what I was most interested in. The microphones are very good, and the recorder can operate in an "audio only" mode. It's fairly small, very light, easy to operate, and so far has had good battery life.I'm using this to record musical rehearsal for private review, filming parts of a home movie project I'm putting together for my little brother in Tennessee, and just toying around in general. It comes with a mic stand to tripod screw adapter, so I was able to mount it on my mic boom right out of the box. Kudos to Alesis for that thoughtful convenience. There are lots of better competing products, but none at this price. Thanks B&H!
