I used it for my canon 70-200F2.8 lens, my swarovski spotting scope and a canon 400F4. I have found that it has a terrible head and is not completely stable with anything heavier than about 4 pounds and that 15.4 pound payload spec. is false. It is only worth around $175

Comments about Sunpak PRO 723BX Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I've had this tripod for almost 2 years now and like it a great deal.

For the still photographer, the PRO 723BX is preferred over the PRO 723P panhead version. I made the mistake of initially buying the PRO 723P thinking it would work OK both for stills and my occasional DSLR video. Sadly the panhead supplied is not a great choice (you have to disassemble handles to pack it in the supplied case) and (in my hands) it's clumsy to operate. So I replaced the supplied panhead with a ballhead from another source leaving me with the a PRO 723BX, but with a different ballhead.

The 15+ lb capacity of the 723 legs is a great choice if you use a full frame DSLR, in my case a 5D-II with a couple long lenses. Stability is good when I remember to tighten the center column adjustment knob (!). With that column tightened, torsional stability is good. And the legs have a sufficiently wide stance to keep the assembly solid even at full extension.

I've never had strong enough winds to feel I needed to add weight to the hook on the bottom of the center column, but I'm sure that's a realistic eventuality. With DSLR + lens attached I've never had a problem with legs collapsing or creeping.

My 'stability test' amounted to bumping into the rig by accident. It looked like the vibration damped quickly. That was encouraging, so I whacked it a few more times intentionally and found it really did dampen quickly. I've never seen signs of blurring in images even with the mirror not locked up nor with night shots with a telephoto lens. But then I have stabilized optics and that may be helping.

Setup is fast with the twist-lock legs. I had thought flip/cam locks might be quicker, but in practice the twist locks work quite well.

If I had to list a complaint it would be that the 723 has only 3 leg sections. With 4-section legs the storage height would be shorter, but I knew the height when I bought this tripod, and I suspect load capacity might be compromised with 4 leg sections.

The PRO 723 BX is pretty hefty, so it falls outside the range called 'travel tripods'. Yet this tripod travels with me wherever I go. Then again I'm not a backpacker. And I want the most stable platform I can get in something that's transportable while I'm legging it around a new town.

Comments about Sunpak PRO 723BX Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I received the product and immediately noticed its weight. This tripod is quite bulky and heavy for regular use. It may be a perfect tripod if you have a studio or don't mind lugging it around.

The tripod is very sturdy and never felt like it was going to tip over. I did like the features it offered, but I will be replacing this tripod for one that is much lighter.
