      Comments about Mountainsmith Spectrum Backpack:

I use this as a daily man purse and to transport my CSC, zoom, and tablet. It carries everything with aplomb. All of my searches for camera backpacks came up with another brand but I just wasn't digging their designs. I stumbled across this pack and it was exactly what I had designed in my head. The fact that it is made from recycled materials and the Manufacturer is based here in sunny Colorado made it perfect.

      Comments about Mountainsmith Spectrum Backpack:

I'm a big fan of Mountainsmith and have had some of their other gear for years so I had high hopes for this pack when we ordered it for my wife's new 5d mark 2 kit. Unfortunately we feel that the lower camera carrying area is just too small for the 5d with the 24-105 f4L. The camera fits in there nicely on it's side, but it takes up more than half of the space and doesn't leave room for much more. I was able to fit in another two lenses next to it, but she'd really prefer a pack with a divided compartment that can hold the camera, extra lenses, radio slaves, flashes, etc. all in one place in the pack. This pack could hold everything, but you'd have to spread it out amongst the pockets and remember where each piece goes. For someone looking for more of a backpack that holds a camera, this would be great, or for smaller cameras perhaps it'll fit better, but for this kit we'll probably cope with it for a little while, then end up getting a more straightforward camera bag like a LowePro ProRunner 350. The main upper compartment is very large and could easily hold a jacket or other clothing, lunch, or other non-photo items. We'll probably repurpose this pack for something else rather than return it. It is a great price for a well made, fully recycled pack.

        Comments about Mountainsmith Spectrum Backpack:

It's a great backpack to hold your camera, lenses, flash, laptop, papers, and bottle holders. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars is that it did not include a rain cover.

Be warned.... it is a big backpack, but I'm okay with that.

The workmanship and layout of this pack is exactly what I was looking for. The pack is also comfortable and is easily adjustable. Took it for a 3 hour hike with gear and food, water, jacket and was extremely happy. I mistakenly bought the bigger pack (the Borealis) but returned it for the Spectrum as the Borealis was too big for my needs.

        Comments about Mountainsmith Spectrum Backpack:

        Good things:
        - Doesn't have a recognizable brand and doesn't necessarily look like a photo backpack so you're not an immediate target for thieves
        - Front drop down zipper pocket - convenient for getting you quick access to your gear
        - Lots of different compartments, including one large laptop one

        Negative:
        - It's a tad heavy - all I had was one camera and a 18-200 lense
        - Because it's black, if you are travelling in dusty conditions it get's dirty really quick - we are in Cambodia currently and it's very dusty so the bag doesn't really look all that black

Overall - basic good introductory camera bag.

I bought this backpack for a trip to Africa. I like the way the camera storage compartment comes open and angles forward for easy access and you don't have your entire backback open while accessing the camera or lenses. I also like that it holds an iPad and a 17' computer in a divided compartment.

            Comments about Mountainsmith Spectrum Backpack:

Just bought this on my trip in NYC. Initially I did select this because it's looking is somehow different from traditional backpacks for photo equipment. I mean, any person can look to a bag and already knew it is for photo equipment and that in Brazil can mean you are now a target for thieves!. This however, really looks like a normal hiking or sports bag.
The negative side of it is that is not that easy to figure out the best configuration at the bottom to fit a camera with a 200mm lenses. The seller show me at the store some options that I really liked...but I couldn't repeat them by myself at the hotel.
Well that is a minor one as if you decided to use the upper access to the camera it would be easy, but you then loose space to keep things like food, maps, dry clothes that you normally need in a large hiking. Otherwise, all looks high quality and is really comfortable.
I wear it 10 days in a row the rest of my trip in New England and did not find any other relevant bad side on this bag.

              Comments about Mountainsmith Spectrum Backpack:

It's a very nice-looking camera backpack. Materials are good and water-resistant. Camera compartment has enough space for my canon 50D with 18-200 IS lens, but quite dificult to put another lens and flash in. Notebook compartment is more roomy than I expected, It also has a built-in neoprene sleeve for notebook inside.

This backpack works best for things like carry-on travel, light hiking, and other times when you're carrying a small or moderate amount of camera gear, a rain jacket, some snacks, etc. It is not as well suited to longer treks with a lot of gear -- get the similar model with a full-blown suspension, if that's what you do.
