I purchased this to complement my Lowepro Exchange Messsenger Bag, a suprisingly roomy bag. The Kit Cube adds much needed rigidity and protection to the Lowepro by sacrificing a little room. For me, the most important feature is that it compatamentalizes the bag so that I'm able to carry my iPad, folders, or other relatively flat items along with my camera gear.
So, if you're in the market for an organizer because you 1) already have a messenger bag you want to turn into a camera bag or 2) already have a camera bag and need the ability to carry a notebook or tablet and, in both cases, can live with reducing your bag's overall capacity, then this is for you.
If not, then a dedicated camera bag with a dedicated partition for notebooks may be a smarter choice.

We bought this "cube" as a travel solution for our DSLR - the intent was to slip this into a shoulder bag or backpack. It's actually too large for that - a smaller size would be better for a compact DSLR, extra lens and battery/charger. Also the nylon fabric is quite stiff and takes some work to open/close the elastic closure.

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
The Kit Cube enables you to convert a standard daypack into a camera pack. I use it with an Osprey Stratos 24 and it fits perfectly. I carry one camera body and two lenses (telephoto zoom + wide angle or macro). Great purchase!

Got this to carry T4i in backpack. Fits my swiss gear like a glove with lots of room left over. Trying to travel light so camera, 2 lenses were what I planned and all that fits with a little room left over. Only draw back is the drawstring closure but can't think of a better way myself.

When my equipment needs to go into a tote bag or other non regular container, they go into this, first. Good price, well made and handy, at times.

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
Bought this for a cross country trip as I didn't want a dedicated camera bag. This worked great and fit into my existing book bag where I could put other clothes/electronics inside. The padding was great and I was able to fit my 60D + 50mm + 18-135mm lenses. Easy to access on the go as well. Highly recommended.

I bought this to put in my backpack when traveling. The best part is I can easily swap it into my day pack when we are out and about. Very happy with it.

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
I use my kit cube whenever I want to waterdown what I am carrying to a shoot. 5D, two lenses, a filter and a battery. Unfortunately the 5D Mark III is wider than the cube, but will still fit just awkwardly. I would recommend this for anyone with a smaller dslr. Otherwise it is quite handy and fits in every piece of luggage I own.

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
I wanted an insert for my day pack, which has a 100oz water bladder and room for gear. I loaded up the Kit Cube with my Nikon d5100 and 16-85 lens, 16-35 lens and some SD cards and extra batteries. It worked like a charm. The cord was a bit difficult to tighten and loosen so I cut off a piece of plastic that was useless for my purposes. Could use one pocket for Grad ND filter. 4"

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
Great build quality, as you'd expect from Mountainsmith, and when used as an insert in another bag, the drawstring pull doesn't really make much sense, so like many other folks, I roll down the extra material, but it binds a bit. No complaints other than that small niggle.

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
I have two of these Kit Cubes from Mountainsmith. I bring my gear when I go hiking and camping. These allow me to protect my gear and place it within my big camping bag without having to awkwardly carry 2 bags. This is a perfectly simple bag that protects my gear without adding unnecessary bulk and weight with unnecessary pockets and buckles. In one bag I carry a Canon T4i, a 18-55 lens, a Rokinon 14mm wide-angle lens and a couple of batteries. In the other I carry an Emotimo TB3 and some misc small items. The internal bright yellow color helps as contrast to find smaller items, even in the dark when using a camping headlamp.
Simple and quality protection when you already have a bigger bag to stuff everything into. Just be sure to pack right side up or use a zip lock to hold very small parts as the top only has a drawstring closure.

I like a lot this camera protection option! I'm not attached to a single camera bag. I have my equipment protected all the time, with the freedom to choose the backpag or shoulder back that fits better for the activity

This fit right in my day pack with no problem. The nice thing is that you do not have to committed to an entire bag system. Just insert in a bag that is large enough. (2000 cubic centimeters). Overall it is easy to use and I am very happy.

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
When I need an inconspicuous bag to carry a DSLR and 1-3 lenses, I prefer my Camelback. This insert allows me to carry a few smaller lenses and a DSLR in addition to liquids on long photowalks. I fold down the hooded cover section over the insert itself so I can easlily access the gear. I previously used a bunch of towels to protect my gear but they hindered quick access. For less than $ , this was perfect for me.

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
I bought three kit cubes to protect my gear while fitting into my favorite medium capacity bacpack. My Canon Eos 7D with 35 mm prime, lens attached and two auxillary lenses fit in one kit cube. The other two kit cubes contained a Really Right Stuff full size ball head and pro omni pivot package along with multiple filters, batteries and two lens hoods. Everything fit like a glove into my backpack. Unpacking the gear will take a little bit longer than pulling it from a backpack specifically made for camera gear but the comfort factor is through the roof. Total weight of bacpack, gear, and tripod is only 22.8 lbs. Wow!

I didn't want to buy a commercial camera bag - I find them conspicuous and utilitarian. I did want to use one of my messenger bags to protect my 5D MkII. This product effectively protects like a commercial camera bag yet allows you to use your every day messenger bag.
It fits inside my Belstaff Colonial Shoulder Bag 556 and my Timbuk2 Classic Messenger (Small).

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
This was just exactly what I was looking for. It fits perfectly in the main pocket of my SwissGear backpack and allows me to safely and conveniently carry my DSLR and 3 lenses. The only con is that I have not mastered the skill of opening the drawstring with one hand, probably because it uses elastic cord. With that said, it allows me to carry a camera in the backpack that I use everyday because I can only take photos if I have my camera with me.

Comments about Mountainsmith Kit Cube:
This is one of the best accessories for a bag ever!
basically turns your Mountainsmith Day or Tour bag into something like a Thinktank Speed Demon. I used to put a Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 laying on the bottom of my bag and then my Nikon D700 with the 24-70 mounted laying on top of each other. Bad! but now, with this Kit Cube, I can carry them like a normal person. I am able to have the D700 with the 70-200 mounted in the first section, 24-70 in the middle section, and an SB-900 in the third section. but the only way to fit the 24-70 is to remove the lens hood which I had put in one of the side mesh pockets of the bag.
The drawstring on the top I kind of found annoying, so before putting the Kit Cube in the bag, I fold over the top cover over the outside of the Cube. I wish I can just cut it off but I think it'll come in handy when rain starts to pour like crazy.
