Comments about Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack:

This bag was extremely well built with many different pockets. The sidewalls were built like a tank. I definitely felt safe about my equipment being in this backpack.

The support from the waist belt made a huge difference on my back, because I was toting almost 50 lbs of video gear.

        I definitely recommend this backpack!

Comments about Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack:

I use this pack just for major trips. Just recently got back from a Shooting trip that took me to LA,Vegas, and Grand Canyon for a week. I had it completely full with 6 lenses, 2 camera bodies, laptop, a ton of chargers, batteries, and all the normal stuff. It weighted a ton but the belt and shoulder straps were comfortable and fit me well and I am a big guy at 6ft 5ins. Also the tripod system is great and worked really well. After lugging it thru airports, hotels, and in the Grand Canyon I must say that there wasn't anything that I could point out that was not well done. This my 3rd Mountainsmith product and they last and last.

Comments about Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack:

This bag is just what is advertised...a VERY large camera backpack! Plenty of photo gear storage space. The adjustable dividers allow for total customizing. I haven't even tried to count all of the smaller pockets and even smaller pockets within pockets. LOTS of storage space for everything from extra memory cards, batteries, cables, pens, lens cleaning gear etc. Even with 2 bodies, 2 chargers, extra batteries, 6 lenses, a speedlight, and an assortment of other stuff, this bag is still very comfortable to carry. The shoulder straps and waist strap are incredible comfortable. The only down side that I have found with this bag is the laptop pouch. Although they say it will fit a 17" laptop, mine will only fit in if the bag is pulled tight around the corners to get it zipped, thereby limiting how much I can use it so as to avoid excess wear on the top of the bag. To sum up... for the money, one would be hard pressed to find a bag of this size and quality for this kind of price.

Nice large interior. will almost fit my C100 with 24-105 built. However I have to fit the Alphatron EVF in a separate interior compartment- cant leave it built with the EVF on. IT will hold camera on short rods with ninja2 on back, additional lens, filters, batteries, cables, macbook pro, hard drive and my 7D if I pack carefully. I reconfigured it several times to get it all in. I had some additional soft dividers for the interior-. I could not find another pack with this much internal L, W, H for the tall camera. I love the back door configuration... no more snow or mud on my back!.

I was able to comfortably pack my DSLR, lenses, stabilizer rigs, wireless lavs & 4 H4n recorders as well as my laptop, chargers, cards and batteries. There isn't a whole lot of padding around the laptop compartment and at 17", the corners of my laptop feel a bit vulnerable, but as the bag is already gigantic, more padding would probably tip the scales a little bit. As comical as it looks strapped to my back, I'm thrilled to only have one carry-on.

I think the laptop and camera compartments should be reversed - have to lay flat to access camera and lens compartment.

So far no real criticisms. I am still deciding how to costumize the interior dividers. The bag will definitely fit two DSLRs with motor/battery drives plus the laptop. It is bigger than I thought it would be but I ordered it to be able to expand.

I have always had difficulty carrying my camera equipment. My search for something easy to carry, I'm a woman and not all that strong, when I found the Parallax Pro Backpack. When I received it from B&H my first thought was "oh my is this large". I started filling it with my equipment and everything fit with room to spare. I put it on adjusting all the straps and was surprised how comfortable if felt and spread the weight out well. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Comments about Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack:

I had been searching for quite some time for a backpack that could handle two DSLR cameras WITH lenses attached, a tripod and a 17"laptop. I always had to compromise on one thing and wasn't able to find one. This one was recommended by a B & H rep and he was right. I have both cameras with lenses on, extra lenses, tools and the laptop and tripod. It does get heavy, but I take the laptop out (and external hard drive) when I get where I'm going. Everything is easy to access. The harness is very comfortable and adjusts perfectly for me. Highly recommend.

Comments about Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack:

As a backpacker and photographer I decided to get this backpack over another very popular backpack I had thought about getting but was a good deal more expensive and was not as versatile. I do a variety of photo work but needed this for being in the woods all day for documenting the species of critters in a certain woodland area. I needed to not only carry a variety of camera gear but lighting equipment and other essentials. That includes food, clothes and also a small stove for cooking up some freeze dried and a hammock and tarp and possibly a water filter. It can hold a lot of lenses and a couple of cameras and flashes.

I would say it will hold two full size dslrs with a 70-200 with hood attached and a teleconverter to one camera along with a mid zoom and a wide, three flashes and some primes if one needed all these at once. The outer pockets are where I would put clothes and food. I use the laptop section for some folded up speed light soft boxes. You can stuff quite a bit into these outer pockets. The outside of the pack can hold a couple light stands, one on each side, a tripod on the front and even another stand on the bottom or even a small sleeping bag or a tent. (Wouldn't really use this for backpacking but an overnight trip I think it could do it. I'm an ultra light backpacker to begin with so I don't need much space in a pack). Also there is room for two large water bottles on each side though you could put a water bladder where the laptop goes and run the tube through the zipper if need be.

As a backpack, it seems fairly tough when compared to the average backpacking pack. It has most all of the same adjustable straps for comfort though the waist belt is a bit less padded and shorter but it works though a bit high on the waist. If a good backpacking pack was a 10 than this would be an 8 or 9 when it come to build quality. I've been using this mostly while riding a bike by the way.

The main complaint I have are the buckles used to tighten the straps with. On my backpacking packs you can just pull the straps and it will tighten with an easy pull with one hand but with the Parallax you have to lift the buckle then pull so the angle is correct to cause less friction between the buckle and strap.

So, as a backpacking pack it could work as an overnighter with not much hiking. It also depends on how light and compact your gear is. As a photo pack it's great, it has more than enough room and storage options. As a day pack with photo gear it's perfect. When doing day hikes all you really need is water, food, first aid kit and a few other very small items and all this will easily fit in the outer pockets. The pack itself is already about 5lbs. compare that to a regular backpacking pack that usually weighs in around 3lbs. or less depending on the size of course but this back is heavy for its size. My last backpacking trip was a 5 day trip and the pack I used weighed less than 2lbs when empty.

At first I wasn't sure I'd like the rear access but prefer it now. Mainly because I don't have to worry about the pack not being fully zipped and everything falling out because it is all against your back and the shoulder straps are connected to the main section of the pack not the back panel so there is no way it could fall open while it's on.

Good pack and made for the photographer that spends time in the woods or anywhere that they need to be self reliant for a couple days. You could probably put more in and on the Parallax than you could lift on to your back.

Comments about Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack:

I needed a pack to fit an 8x10" ultrawide box camera with a mounted lens, and this was the deepest pack I could find listed at B&H. Fortunately, the camera does fit - just. However, the manufacturer's specification of 10" for interior depth is optimistic - about 8" in the main compartment is more like it. So measure your equipment carefully before you order.

Another distinctive aspect of this pack is that the main compartment opens on the same side as the shoulder straps and belt. Of course, these get in the way when I'm in a hurry to pull the big camera out or put it back.

On the plus side, the external compartment can comfortably swallow three 8x10 film holders.

Overall it seems to be a pretty good pack, and a decent value.

I picked this up to replace my Flipside 300 because I needed more storage. Luckily we were in NYC so we just stopped by B&H. Unfortunately we were in NYC during the Noreaster in October but I hiked through it all for 4+ hours and all of my gear was dry. I wasn't dry but my gear was. :)

Comments about Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack:

I just purchased the The Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack. Primary use is travel and leisure photography.

This is a great product. Be aware the backpack is big. I am 5'7" and it fits me fine. Very comfortable for extended periods. Currently the pack holds a Canon EOS 60D with a 17-135 lens, along with the Canon 100-400L zoom. Well placed and protected pockets provide plenty of storyage for memory cards, batteries, flash and other accessories. This pack has a pocket for upto a 17" laptop!

A rain cover completes the ability of the pack to protect your investment. Money well spent.

Great protection, ample capacity and comfort when moving through airports or hiking. Room enough to carry a little bit of clothing.

Downside - some have mentioned this pack is huge.
For smaller adults this is has to be considered.

Comments about Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backpack:

I bought this backpack prior to a trip to Peru and Florida. I had some concerns about its size and ability to stow in aircraft overhead bins, but I've carried it on 13 flights involving MD88, B737 (2 variants), B757, A319, and A320 aircraft, and it fit all. You will have to detach your tripod from the bag.
The padded waist belt is great, and the small pockets on the belt are quite handy for carrying smaller items such as memory cards, or remotes. The tripod carrying system is great.
A lot of bags claim to hold a 17" laptop, but fall short. Not this one. It easily holds a 17.3" laptop. There's also another large pocket that can easily hold a rain jacket, or more camera gear. I use it for spare batteries and chargers.
The main compartment is roomy and deep enough to hold a full-frame DSLR with grip. I carry:
Sony A850, gripped with Sigma 70-200MM lens
                            Sony A350
                            Sigma 28MM
                            Sigma 24-70MM
                            Sigma 135-400MM
                            Sony HVL-F58AM
                            Sony HVL-F20AM
                            B+W Close-up lens
Several filters, Lenspen loupe and other lens/sensor cleaning equipment, and there is still some room.

This thing is huge! I bought because I was traveling and needed to take my 17inch laptop but it was just too much for my needs. I just didn't need all that space but if I did I would have definitely kept it. Strong, sturdy. I could see how it would be heavy.
