Product Highlights
  • Tele-Macro Lens
  • Weather Resistant (WR) with 6 Seals
  • 1:1 Magnification
  • Outstanding Depth of Field Control
  • Super Protect Lens Coating
  • Aluminum Housing

Optimized for DSLRs and compatible with film SLR cameras, the smc PENTAX-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens is constructed with an aluminum housing and 6 weather seals (thus the WR designation) so you can shoot in almost any environment without risking internal damage to the lens. Optical elements are treated with the Pentax Super Protect multi-layer coating to lower surface reflection, reduce ultraviolet rays, and deliver clear, high-contrast images. Plus, the configurations of its optical elements produce crisp, sharp images with no flare and ghosting. It also features a "Quick Shift" focusing system which allows you to easily switch between manual and AF modes.

Achieving life-size (1:1) magnification, this macro lens is ideal for the close-up photography including, but not limited to, nature, technical, medical or product applications. It is also great for portraiture. Its 8 rounded diaphragm blade configuration assists in producing out-of-focus areas of your images with a pleasing look.

I love shooting macro and this lens is perfect for my needs. I like that it's weather-resistant because when I shoot outdoors, I tend to catch all sorts of little creatures in the early morning (when they're not quite as active) and that can often mean a lot of humidity in the summer. Coupled with the K-5, I don't think twice about being in damp weather. This lens stays on my camera or in my kit bag. I never leave it behind. When shooting 1:1, you definitely need a tripod unless your hands are rock steady which can make capturing spur of the moment insect shots a little tough but that's not a fault of the lens. I like that I can use autofocus and then quickly tweak by hand as needed without having to shut-off AF first.

    Disappointment

I bought this for use as a protrait lens in place of my Pentax 50-135 2.8 zoom lens. I was disappointed in that it was not as sharp and had considerable Chromatic Aberration

This lens not only produces exceptional images at 1:1, but it is also water resistant and small compared to the competition. The full metal construction is a nice touch.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I'm a very dedicated amateur photographer who spent years using "bridge" digital cameras before finally getting an SLR last fall. That said, I've used the close-up function on "bridge" cameras regularly to take shots of creatures, flowers, vegetables, etc.--but I've never experienced anything like this lens.

I've mainly been using it for macro shots, but the few portraits I've tried haven't disappointed me. The images are clear, crisp, beautiful; the smoothness of the background is gorgeous; the focus is tremendous (I have only been using manual focus). The quality of the lens has not only made me see things I'd never noticed before--the many species of neighborhood spiders; the fractals within flowers; the details of flies and caterpillars--but it has given me a new interest in becoming a better and more thoughtful photographer: the lens is so good that I want my compositions to be equal to it.

So far I've been using it almost daily for three weeks, and I haven't found anything to complain about (again, I know some people have felt the auto-focus is slow, but I haven't used it, so I can't say). I haven't taken advantages of the highest f-stops yet because I haven't been using a tripod, but so far every element of this lens has been a joy.

So far I really love this lens. This is my first macro lens, but it is really sharp, I'm finally getting some of the stunning photographs I used to get with my film camera. Once in awhile it has problems with the focus, but otherwise it's really great.

I have only had a short time but have had lots of fun with it already. The 100m macro is so much more than the 50m I used with my film camera. Unbelieveable shots of common flowers not appear spectacular. Fcousing ring is sooooo smooth. I look foward to trying it on potraits. Just alot of fun, just like my 10-17 Pentax, only sharper.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

This piece of gem is fantastic ! There is no reason at all to post process the files, the images this lens provides are outstanding right out of the camera. Colors, bokeh and the amount of detail, especially after cropping, makes you want to sleep with this lens under your pillow.
The only drawback is that it sometimes hunts for focus but as macro lens, you would want to play with MF anyway, and I enjoy every moment of that play :)
The best thing about this lens is that it's pure fun to use. Second best is that all your friends will envy you for it :))
The bottom line : just buy it !

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I bought this to partly replace my Sigma 50mm macro. The 50mm means almost working at touch distance of small animals such as insects. The 100mm with its greater working distance fixes that issue. The lens is wonderfully constructed with its aluminium barrel, the manual focus is hydraulically smooth, image quality is superb and overall finish has a clean uncluttered look. One drawback is the lack of a focus limiter so often the lens whirrs away on autofocus travelling its full focus length before reaching focus. This can be somewhat ameliorated by going to manual focus,at a point near where the subject is then switching to autofocus for the finer adjustment. I prefer this to fulltime manual focus. As a bonus the lens is small for a 2.8 macro and in its soft case, stores readily in a carry bag.
PS - I would have given five stars if it had a focus limiter. 4 and a half is my preferred score.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I love this lens! the construction feels like the old die cast toys you used to get compared to the new plastic fantastic rubbish you get now. The finish is smooth and it has the same feel as my beloved limited edition FA lenses.

Focus is generally smooth but it does wander a bit when focusing from near to far subjects but not enough to make you switch to manual focusing.

Image quality is generally very good with excellent sharpness throughout but especially stopped down past F4. Bokeh is smooth and creamy due to the circular aperture blades and the resulting background blur is very pleasing.

I use it mostly for macro and portrait photography but versatile for most applications except sports. When using the lens for macro photography I recommend a tripod and/or the Pentax macro flash to truly take advantage of its excellent qualities.

Overall, a great lens that I would recommend to someone that wanted the best performance for their money.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I have been wanting a dedicated Macro lens that went closer than 1:2 for awhile, I finally was able to afford this lens and all I can say is "WOW!" It is small, reasonably light, and incredibly sharp. My biggest problem is holding it steady enough at closest focus, well that and having things move in the wind! A solid tripod is a MUST at the closer focusing distances, and a subject that is not moving!

What it works well for: Isolating objects from their background. Getting REALLY close for high magnification while keeping a certain distance from skittish things... like bugs. Candid photos. Anything where you need a soft creamy background, the bokeh is incredible.... really!

Things that bug me: It hunts a little bit at times.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

The lens is exceedingly well made. DOF control is extremely sharp. This implies two things: first you will almost always need to step down the lens to get the desired DOF for macro work. Second, with such sharp DOF and focus, unless the light is anything less than completely bright, you will need a tripod to use this lens because your shutter speed will have to drop significantly to obtain the right exposure. Also, I found that in practice this lens is best used in manual focus mode, but that is generally true for all good macro photography, anyway. The lens' short size and light weight are very helpful.

Highly recommended for full-length portraiture, and quality macro photography. Recommend you buy a decent UV and IR filter for this lens.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I couldn't be happier with this lens - I got it for macro work (which it's great at, naturally) but it's also great for portraiture - headshots are a breeze with this lens.

It took me a little while to get used to not having a zoom (I got spoiled by my Pentax K-5's kit lens and my previous camera) but once I remembered what it was like to have a prime lens (like in the film days) I was able to start taking some really nice photos.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

Is what a macro should be: sharp, close focusing (1:1), sharp, contrasty, did I say sharp, weather -resistant to boot. Also very useful as a general purpose telephoto (35mm equivalent is 150mm). Perhaps a bit long for portraits (you can always add diffusion later if it is too sharp). Got some very nice flower closeups with it on K-5. Autofocus is accurate although not the fastest. Manual focus is very usable.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I use this lens for macro photography and portraits. The moderate size of the lens is a great feature. It produces crisp photos with a wonderful bokeh. The only draw back I can think of is that a pol filter is difficult to turn since you don´t reach it with your fingers inside the lens hood.
