I have had this product for 3 ½ years and reviewed it about 3 years ago…I have more to add regarding compatibility between cameras and lenses, image quality, and build quality…all the things we look for from a user's review.

First, of course, you will lose one f/stop, but only one…unlike the 2X and 3X teleconverters, where you will lose two and three f/stops.

I have used this teleconverter with my Canon 5D2 and my 400D (Rebel XTi) camera bodies. It worked flawlessly on both cameras with the following lenses: the Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM AF, Canon 70-200L f/4 USM, Canon 24-105 f/4L IS USM, Tokina SD 11-16 f/2.8 (IF) DX, Tamron AF 17-50 f/2.8 XR DiII SP, and the Sigma 150 f/2.8 APO Macro DG HSM…with and without my Speedlites (580EXII, 430EX, and 220EX).

Regarding lens and camera body compatibility issues with the Tokina and the Tamron lenses: Both lenses were designed to be used with APS-C sensor cameras, like my 400D. They were not designed for the 5D2, which has a full-sized sensor. The Tamron is worthless on the 5D2 due to severe vignetting, and with the exception of the 16mm zoom setting, the Tokina is likewise unusable once the zoom is opened up toward the 11mm wide end (it actually works fine at 16mm). However, with the addition of the 1.4X teleconverter, both Tamron and Tokina work with little or no vignetting (very slight vignetting at both lenses' widest opening…an easy fix-it task with PhotoShop). Note: Obviously neither of these lenses are made by Canon, which may account for the fact that although they are EF-S mount lenses, they still work with the Kenko teleconverter.

Of course, the teleconverter's 1.4X magnification power factor has a similar effect as Canon's cropped APS-C sensor cameras in that the relative magnification power is increased; so an 11-16 zoom actually becomes a 16-22 wide zoom, and so on. But that's still less than the 1.6X factor increase from an APS-C sensor…the same 11-16 effectively becomes an 18-26 wide zoom. The bottom line here is that the teleconverter has allowed me (if I choose to) to use two more lenses (dedicated APS-C sensor lenses) on my 5D2 that I was unable to use without the teleconverter.

Connectivity issues: Although the Kenko teleconverter allows the two camera bodies to "talk" to all of the above-mentioned lenses flawlessly (that includes aperture, shutter speed, AF, and IS), I have one lens that will not talk to either camera body through the Kenko connection pins. My ProOptik 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye lens works OK on my 400D (in its quirky prehistoric way), but not correctly on the 5D2 (it's vignetting above and beyond the Nth degree). Neither camera, however, recognizes the ProOptik's connectivity when the Kenko is added to the mix, resulting in "error" messages.

Image quality does not appear degraded by this product…at least as far as I can see. Although I've mentioned the vignetting issue, the color fringing (chromatic aberration) is also affected by the teleconverter in a positive way. Since color fringing is generally more pronounced with wide angle lenses and at the wider end of wide zooms, the 1.4X magnification reduces the "wide" and consequently it appears to reduce the color fringing at the contrasty edges. At least that's been my experience.

Finally, the Kenko Pro 1.4X teleconverter has a nice, professional finish. The connection to my camera bodies was clean, tight, and solid; and it disconnects cleanly.

I used this with a 60D and 70-300 IS 4-5.6. I would say the photos I tested with were a little bit sharper at 100% crop compared to 140% crop without it. I found that the images look great if you know how to use your camera and to make adjustments accordingly. In AV or TV mode they we're a little over exposed and blown out. By compensating by stepping down the EV -2/3 the images were great.

True I often used manual focus and my lens became a 5.6-8 aperature as expected. No problem as I expected this.

The reason I gave this 3 stars is because of the build quality/design. The front protector cap on it was very loose and was expecting it to fall off in the camera bag. If the ap comes off and scratches the element it may be destroyed?

More alarming was the truth that my lens detached from the TC on 3 or 4 separate occurances. I think my fingers touched the release button while zooming and the whole lens twisted off. Two reasons I think this happened is that the button protrudes unnecessarily far from the body and the spring that holds the lenses together is really not strong enough. I ser no reason why the buttonis not flush with the TC body. I tested the spring of the body and I feel it really was kind of flimsy. I would rather not use this product than drop and damage a lens.

almost no loss of sharpness, very easy to mount and use.
I use it with a Sigma 150-500mm, so at the 500mm end camera cannot autofocus, no big deal, I use it mostly outdoors and to take pictures of the moon at night.

Comments about Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter:

I use this with a Canon 70-300mm lens. It really makes a huge difference when photographing a distant object. Auto focus works most of the time. Sometimes you have to manually focus initially, but once the camera "finds" the object, the auto-focus will still work even with the teleconverter.

Used with Canon 70D and 400mm 5.6 prime , for birds. Quick focus for BIF with 1 spot focus. Extremely satisfied with IQ, no difference with Canon 1.4 for image, but I get a few bonuses: AF and I save 250$. No brainer.

The quality of the product far exceeded my expectations considering the price. I was expecting it to look and feel cheap but that wasn't the case. With a perfect day on hand and knowing where some Egrets would be hanging out, I decided to give give this thing a go. I used the teleconverter with a Canon 70-300mm lens mated to a Canon EOS 60D. My objective was to test out the autofocus and clarity of the images on an clear and sunny day. I'm going to let the pictures do the talking for the rest of this review.

I purchased this teleconverter to use with my Nikon 70-300 AF-S lens on my Nikon D300 camera. I also have a Nikon D5300 camera which I use with a 18-140 kit lens. I found that it works great on the D5300 but not so great on the D300. Auto focus searches way too much for me and I had difficulty getting it to lock in on small things like birds etc, whereas it did that just fine on the D5300. I'm returning it.

I have used the Kenko teleconverter with several EF lenses; Canon 70-300L; Canon 50mm 1.4; Canon pancake 40mm; Canon 135mmL; so far, I can not distinguish any visual difference in IQ between the Canon 1.4 ii and Pro 300. The best part is that the Kenko Pro 300 seems to fit on most Canon EF lenses. It is well worth its price. No issues with the AF either as of today.

Worked well on my 70D with Canon 70-300L lens. Focusing performance using just center point was no different with the teleconverter in the 70 - 200mm range. I did notice focus performance dropped off at 300mm, and often required multiple AF retries before focus was achieved. With a 1.6x crop sensor (70D) and 1.4x teleconverter, I was getting effective focal length of 672mm at maximum zoom with this lens. The price to performance cannot be beat and is best value. For bird and wild life photography in good light, one can spend thousands more for very little extra performance. Best value body + converter + lens combination I think.

I use this teleconverter with my Canon Rebel T3 and my Canon 70-300 mm telephoto lens. I live next door to a bird refuge and use my gear to take wildlife shots, mostly of birds. I have gotten excellent pictures with this combination. The teleconverter has really made a difference in the closeness and detail I can get. Please be aware that I am a beginner amateur and am just learning my techniques and equipment, but this has really helped. The only issue I have with the teleconverter is that it has its release button in a place that is easy to accidentally touch and release the lens. Yikes! I accidentally released it once and was lucky enough to have been holding the lens at the time, so no damage was done. Now, I make sure I hold the lens carefully and avoid the release switch.

I was in the market for a teleconverter for my Canon 400mm 5.6 and 5D3. The Canon 1.4 is a bit pricey and the AF was questionably if it would work with my setup. I was very happy to find that the Kenko AF does work with my Canon 400mm 5.6. Images are a bit soft around the edges and you'll lose one stop but that is expected with any teleconverter. I got the reach I wanted with very good results and for an excellent price.Very good product.

I bought this item to use with my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens, since the canon tele converters are not compatible with the lens. I must say I'm pleasantly surprised with the performance of this lens.

This product works exactly as advertised. It is well made and passes through all of the info needed for autofocus to function. There is a problem with autofocus at the maximum zoom of my Tamron 18-270, but as soon as you back off the zoom slightly autofocus begins to function again. I knew about this autofocus issue prior to purchasing the teleconverter.

Haven't had the chance to use this much yet but so far it is exactly what I expected. Auto focus on my 5d Mark III is just fine. On the 7D it occasionally does the hunting routine. It also has the advantage of working with all my lenses.

I get the extra focal length without having to spend on a very expensive lens...fine for me, a hobbyist.

The AF works better than expected with this attached. It does have to hunt more at closer range, but I expected that. And if I have to use MF, it's not a big deal for wildlife at a distance. Also, is better in lower light than expected.

Had concerns about autofocus but this TC works with Canon 6D and Canon 400mm lens. You loose a stop (F8). Images are sharp and a cheap way to increase the focal length to 560mm. In poor light the AF is slow.

The extender works on Canon 6D (full frame) and the autofocus worked on the Canon 400mm F/5.6. The images are sharp (have not compared to the Canon TC), but there is vignetting of the corners. You loose one stop (goes to F8 by default) and you need to crank up the ISO a tiny bit.

Works great with my 100L and 70-300L on my 5Dmk3, just some times the AF needs assistance. I would have to manual focus part way to help AF lock on. Some times the AF would not lock on by it self. Love the fact I'm still using full frame and get some added reack for both my lenses. You will need to check this converter works on your body, doesn't work on every body. I only seen 15% lose in IQ and only looking at the 100% crops in LR4. But I'm starting out with some seriously sharp lenses.

I bought this to use with my 60D and 70-300L based on positive reviews. However, it was immediately clear that the images were downgraded compared to the lens alone, although mostly not by a lot. Cropping images taken without the TC gave results equal to or better than those with the TC, with the advantage of the extra stop and without slower focusing and sometimes hunting. Other than that it worked fine, and would appear to be very useful with a lens of lower quality than the L, where the difference would likely not be noticeable and the reach would be an advantage.
