Product Highlights
  • 1.4X Teleconverter
  • Multi-coated Lens Elements
  • For Use with Canon EF Lenses

The TelePlus MC4 AF 1.4X DGX Teleconverter for Canon by Kenko gives you the dramatic effect of increasing the focal length of your lens by 1.4x. The MC4 features a 4-element, 4-group design with multi-coated lens elements, and fully automatic diaphragm coupling. With the Kenko TelePlus MC4 DGX your prime lens' depth of field is reduced by 1/1.4, but retains the prime minimum focusing distance.

TelePlus converters have genuine Gated Array IC (Integrated Circuitry). This means that signal integrity is maintained between the camera body and lens and autofocus will work properly on lenses with apertures of F/4 or brighter. On lenses with smaller f-stop values, manual focusing may be necessary. The updated circuitry also allows for the exposure meta-data to be recorded by the camera more accurately.

Note! The TelePlus MC4 AF 1.4X DGX Teleconverter is NOT compatible with Canon EF-S lenses. The Kenko DGX TelePlus converters are not compatible with the Canon Digital Rebel XT/Rebel 350D camera body and will not function on them. All other Canon DSLR cameras bodies work with Kenko DGX converters.

    Severely Degraded AF and Tracking

I purchased this extender for use between my Canon 7D and 70-200 2.8 IS II. I mainly shoot sports photography and had a sporting event upcoming that I wanted to use it for. When it arrived, I took some test shots of a sign across the street with and without the extender at the native 2.8 and 4.0 apertures. I was surprised to see that the image quality was pretty good and was excited to use it at the event the following day.

Unfortunately, while the image quality doesn't take a huge hit, the AF certainly does. The 70-200 2.8 IS II has an amazingly fast AF system. This, paired with my 7D makes it a killer combo for fast-paced sports with a lot of action. When I added the extender at the event, the AF system became terrible. It could not track the action at all and even had a hard time focusing on people just standing there. The keeper rate was almost zero with only 2 or 3 out of 20 or 30 that I took with the extender actually being in focus.

Wanting to give the product another shot, I took it out to a farmer's market with people milling about and dogs running around to see how it held up there. Again, AF was extremely hit or miss (mostly miss) and it had problems tracking people walking just slowly about the market. It seemed to do OK, not great, at AF on signs but that was about it. It had trouble with anything that was moving.

I would have loved to give this a great review based on some other reviews I've read and seen about how great the optics are in this extender for the price. Unfortunately, optics don't matter when very few pictures are in focus. Perhaps it is a problem with the new version of the 70-200 2.8 IS II. I'm not sure. However, I returned this as it simply didn't work for me at all. Given B&H's great return policy, it might be worth a shot for others to try out to see if it might work for them.

Comments about Kenko TelePlus MC4 AF 1.4X DGX Teleconverter for Canon:

I was specifically looking to enhance the zoom on my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens which I use on a Canon t4i. Tried out several other teleconverters in the store, including the Canon at 4 times the price. This was the only one that retained the ability to auto-focus at full zoom.

Use for a little extra reach for wildlife photography with a Tamron 200-500mm. Oddly enough, the auto focus works more often than not, as long as its sunny.

When used with my 70-300 zoom, there are severe autofocus problems especially in low light. At 300 mm, sharpness is severely compromised. When I turned off the autofocus and the image stabilizer, the performance improved.

It does what it says it will do but the quality of the photo with the teleconverter has a noticeable drop of in sharpness.

Being on a limited budget,I purchased this teleconverter based on reviews I had read. I tried it on my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L and my 100-400 4.0-5.6 L. I was absolutely crushed when I had not one sharp photo; this, after shooting with a tripod, at different focal lengths, and using manual focus (both manual and auto on the 70-20 f2.8). Very disappointing. There should be
good quality, medium priced lens accessories available to people who love photography but find it difficult to pay top price.

Make sure you put it on the camera first not the lens. I was also able to put it on all my other cannon lenses. It auto focused perfectly. I would highly recommend this teleconverter by Kenko.

Comments about Kenko TelePlus MC4 AF 1.4X DGX Teleconverter for Canon:

I use the extender for nature photography with a 100-400 5.6f Canon lens. Autofocus works fine. Pictures are clear, even at 400mm and I can hand hold the camera. Would highly recommend this extender.

I agonized about which extender to buy and finally bought this Kenko. I was concerned that the low price meant low quality but didn't want to spend too much for my limited use. It works well with my Canon 100-400 5.6f lens. I was concerned about auto focus and low light. Auto Focus worked fine even on a overcast day. I'm very pleased and would highly recommend this extender. I use the extender to photograph nature.

Good product. Use on a Cannon 70-200 F4 USM. As lens is non IS I use with a monopod and ball head. Obviously bright days are an asset. For price cannot go wrong.

Comments about Kenko TelePlus MC4 AF 1.4X DGX Teleconverter for Canon:

This is a very good teleconverter. I don't see how the Pro version could improve upon it. Images are very sharp, even at 300mm. I use this on a Tamron 70-300 VC lens. The lens will auto focus quickly 99% of the time in good light. I saw a lens test where this DGX version was better that the Pro DG version under lab conditions. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Any teleconverter is only as good as the lens you put it on. It will magnify any flaws in the lens. I tried this on an old 75-300 lens from a film SLR camera. The results were poor at 300mm.
