The Tiffen 58mm Digital Neutral Density Filter Kit is a complete set of filters to help you get better shots in bright light as well as assisting you with some special effect images.
Neutral Density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.
Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
- To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
- To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
- To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
- To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Neutral Density Factors
- ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO by 1/2)
- ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO by 1/4)
- ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO by 1/8)
- ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO by 1/16

I purchased the Tiffen 58mm Neutral Density Filter Kit for photographing waterfalls, especially the magical effects created by flowing and splashing water. The 3-filter set, used individually or in combination by screwing several filters together, allows the photographer to get the necessary time exposure without blowing out the shot with too much light, ergo "sometimes less is more." I used the set in combination with a polarizer to reduce glare. I like the flexibility in a 3-filter combinable set. With the right kind of camera, you may screw the set onto the camera lens, however with my digital camera I had to hold the filter combination by hand while I took the shot.

Did a lot of research in which filters I should get for my first set. Ended up going with this one because of the low price point and higher performance that some of the same filters in the price range. Got the kit and was really excited only to find out one of the filters had a defect and had to send it back. B&H was closed for Passover and had to send them back anyway and ended up having ordering a variable ND Tiffen to replace these. I know this sounds like a negative review but it is not. This is a great kit and B&H was on it as soon as they reopened. We are keeping this kit as backup/second camera filters. Great product for a great price. Makes an otherwise unsalvageable lighting situation into the perfect shot.
