Comments about Yamaha KP125W Electronic Kick Tower Pad (White):

I recently purchased a second KP125W to accompany the one that came with my Yamaha DTX950K set, (it was less expensive to grab another of these than buy a double in what I already possess as two single pedals), having made the tabooed shift from acoustic to electronic drums. Transitioning to a 12" pad from a 22" kick has taken time, as any experienced drummer would understand, but I am rather pleased with the feel of it. No, it does not feel EXACTLY like an actual drum head, but it does play the part rather well, much better than the majority kick pads. However, I cannot speak in comparison to the Roland KD-12 or KD-14, because no one in my area has them--the prices of those two are well beyond ridiculous. The KP125W has a good amount of "give" once broken in--unlike its rubber-padded counterparts--and isn't overly bouncy (my original kick drum heads were a bit tight anyway). The triggering is incredibly accurate and will not miss a beat, even with a double pedal (I used a Pearl Eliminator double until my second KP125W showed up). The "level" knob on the outside head is handy when you wish to increase or decrease the volume of the pad without addressing the module. There is also a "Pad-Input" jack on the outside head for connecting another mono-pad to the kick. The tower itself has a good weight to it (about 10-11 pounds or 5 kg), and the bracing system is rather sturdy--so far mine haven't even budged. The pad is also quite durable, taking thousands of hits from a primarily tech/death metal drummer without complaint or misfire. I would recommend, however, purchasing a stronger patch than the one provided--a personal favorite being the kevlar Remo Falam Slam. Now for the cons. This pad is rather loud. That's not a bad thing if you like to hear each step, but for those who use the plastic side of the beaters (like me) and live in very close quarters with neighbors or in a building with no sound-proofing, this pad might be too much. To remedy this, a felt beater(s) would be a great help, but you still probably won't get away with playing at 3 A.M. in an apartment complex. The price is also a bit steep (at [$]), but the quality received is worth every cent. Plus, this thing doesn't even cost HALF of what a Roland KD-12 does and amounts to only a THIRD of the KP-14. That's just plain wrong, so I say the KP125W feels so, so right. Another excellent Yamaha product--I would highly recommend it to any one.
