The new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED Wide Angle Lens is a precision prime lens with a natural wide angle view and is constructed to deliver the crisp and distortion-free image captures that are expected from Nikon. This Nikkor is built with 12 Nano Crystal coated lens elements in 10 groups including 2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) and 2 Aspherical lenses that help create images that are sharp and dynamic without chromatic or other aberrations even at f/1.4.

Autofocusing is accomplished via Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and with Rear Focus (RF) you will experience fast, accurate and quiet operation. The buzzword about this lens and its fellow F1.4 aperture stablemate is 'bokeh', however, a wide angle lens and such bokeh almost sounds like oxymoron, but this is a lens you buy it for its 1.4, not 2.8.Other than shooting wide open with outstanding performance at low light settings, the shallow DOF throws anything distractive out of focus so the image focal point centralize on the main subject. This wide an angle means you have to move in close and use a lower ISO for the best effect. I shot orchid show at the botanical garden, and it is quite an experience not shooting the same with the 60 or 105mm micro. Those two lenses usually isolate subject matter quite well, but in handling the 24mm, you have to pay close attention to your composition. One strange observation is this, that the 24mm is actually longer than its 85mm stablemate (both F1.4G).This lens was on my 'dream list' for awhile since it was introduced, the astronomical price is of course the culprit keeping me at bay, however, with Nikon's limited time discount a full 10% at sales price, it is the right incentive for me to move forward with it.This is a piece of precision engineered masterpiece, the nano coating helps you at almost all adverse lighting conditions to reduce flare and glare, the focus is quiet and smooth, and with the D4, an unbeatable combo. My advice for those who would wish to pick between this one or the 28mm F1.8G, or 35m F1.4G? Don't buy it for prestige, it is a heavy lense compare to F1.8 siblings, but buy it if you often shoot under adverse lighting condition, or predominantly low light condition where getting the shot is a 'must' for you or else, your credibility, friendship, liability and success all hang in the balance. One more thing, pair this with appropriatie camera body that can take full advantage of what it can deliever. This will be a piece of glass that will deliver outstanding performance years and decades to come.

I bought this thinking I would use it on both FF and DX. It required a +1 adjustment on the D700 to get perfect focus, and that is not bad. On the D200 it back-focused significantly and on the D300s it required a -20 fine-tuning to compensate for the severe front-focus and it was not enough, it still front focused. Sharpness in the center was extremely sharp center and the corners better than good. The corners continue improving to about 2.8 and from there on out no noticeable improvement. Vignette is not bad wide open and the bokeh is stunning. If not for the focusing issues, I would have kept it. For a comparison, I borrowed a 28mm Sigma 1.8 and wide open the Nikon was sharper center and corner by a small margin. Stopping down to 2.0 the difference was harder to distinguish and by 2.8 there were equal. The Sigma continued improving all the way to 8.0 while the Nikon began to degrade. Doing outdoor testing for CA's wide open the Nikon was amazing and had zero CA, while the sigma had some minor CA, stopping down to 2.0 and 2.8 the Sigma improve drastically. The Nikon did not need to because it was already perfect. I also tested for flare and both exhibited similar better than expected characteristics.Overall, this lens this is the best lens I have ever used wide open. For low light shooters it is a must have. I decided to send it back to B&H and wait for the 35mm 1.4 AF-S and I am going to buy the Sigma 28mm 1.8 to hold me over in the mean time. Bottom line I expected better from a [$] lens, I would rather struggle going through a few $350 Sigma lenses looking for a good copy then doing the same thing on [$] Nikons. I just hope Nikon gets their act straight with the 35mm 1.4 AF-S.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED Wide Angle Lens:

I had to hand over a truckload of cash for this lens but it became my favorite the minute I started using it, so I suppose it was worth the investment. As other reviewers have pointed out, if all you're planning to shoot is landscapes then there are much cheaper alternatives. But open this baby up to 1.4 and you'll be shooting incredible portraits in no time, with a wonderful combination of wide-angle perspective and pleasant bokeh.

I switched from shooting with a 24-70mm 2.8 to using this lens and an 85/1.8. And I'm loving it. The images off the lens are tack sharp and the auto focus is snappy.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED Wide Angle Lens:

TIP: Do not buy this lens unless you plan to shoot at f/1.4 99% of the time. The lens is magical at its widest aperture. That's what it's meant for. If you're gonna stop down, then you might as well get something much much cheaper. Again, this $-dollar equipment was designed specifically for the shallow DOF (depth of field) hence the creamy bokeh. BTW, the latter is just soooooo beautiful, it's addictive. This lens is perfect for wide-angle portraits, photojournalistic, environmental, night, concert photos. If you're shooting mainly landscapes, do not bother with this lens. For landscapes, you always have to stop down, which renders its f/1.4 capability pointless.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED Wide Angle Lens:

While years of therapy, and a cranky old man down the street, have convinced me that sharpness is rarely the near the top of the list of what makes a photograph interesting or compelling, I will get it out of the way: this lens is in fact the sharpest one I own.

I was concerned initially by closeup photos of brick walls (which is apparently a prerequisite to publishing a review) showing a moderate amount of barrel distortion. At working distances of most right angles, I've not noticed a significant problem.

This is a very good lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED Wide Angle Lens:

Out of the many lenses I have worked with in my life... This is my favorite. I will preface this review with the fact I have grown very fond of wide angles, but I have shot everything from short to long lenses. I picked up this lens for the first time at a camera shop and put it on my D800. I immediately tested two things: sharpness and bokeh. Sharpness: I took a picture of a loop from about 2.5 feet away and then later looked at the image and noticed the dust on the glass element at f1.4. It was amazing. Mind you, there were plenty of chromatic aberrations, but some of this can be corrected out. And anyway, you can just stop down for amazing results. Bokah: I've never seen such beautiful bokeh on a 24mm lens, let alone any bokeh at all. All of these elements come together to make an extraordinary lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED Wide Angle Lens:

Reviewers all over have been praising this lens as being one of the sharpest lenses that one can own, and I most certainly support those sentiments. Even wide open, the definition of this lens is absolutely ridiculous and unmatched by any of the other Nikkors that I've shot. Despite this, you can still get some very creamy bokeh. Stop it down and the resolution that you can get out of this lens is essentially unmatched by anything in its price range.I find this lens to be VERY useful in no-light situations because, though you still get a relatively narrow depth of field, you can get a lot in focus and the short focal length allows you to handhold at slower speed than any of the other 1.4 primes in the Nikon lineup. Use it for nights out on the street or for group shots at events or if you're out taking landscapes: there are so many situations where you can just take this one lens and rock with it.Of course, this lens is not without its flaws (like every other piece of engineering out there). This is the priciest of all Nikkor primes short of the tele series (200 f/2, 300 f/2.8, etc.), so I do definitely recommend you go rent one and try it out before you buy it. Also, this may be a personal thing, but I actually prefer the punchy colors and contrast of my 35 slightly more than the 24...but that's all tiny tots. If you do find the lens to suit your needs and decide to take the plunge, rest assured that you will not regret the decision. The 24mm is a very versatile lens that will come in handy in a wide variety of your photographic situations.

This is my "normal" lens on the D4. The ability to utilize the wide angle of view, and its phenomenal sharpness allowing heavy crop makes this one of my favorites of the 15 Nikkor lenses I have from 10.5 to 400mm f/2.8.

I shoot a lot of night club events. This is a great lens for low light photography. In group shots be sure to lower the aperature a few stops up, or things will be blurry.

This is an incredible lens. The autofocus is fast and accurate, and the image quality is phenominal on my D800. Although perhaps not designed primarily for landscape, I find it very useful for that purpose, especially handheld in the low light of the magic hours. So for me, this is an excellent all-around wide angle lens that knocks it out of the park for sharpness and overall image quality.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED Wide Angle Lens:

Having used this lens for a month or so, i am pretty impressed with the results it churns out. The resolution it can handle is very good. This lens has opened up new vistas for me. I was predominantly into Tele end and then something stuck me really hard and pushed me to see things from a different perspective. And, there is no better instrument than this. Coming to the brickbats, the autofocus is slow and i have seen issues with front focusing. This is probably a defect with my peice. Having said that, when you can manually adjust the focus, the results are amazing. Mind that the lens throw is very minimal and you might have to make use of the True View[LCD] to nail the focus.

Wonderful lens to work in low light situation and for Wedding and Photojournalistic shots.

Would add more to this as and when i discover more.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED Wide Angle Lens:

I don't know why people say this lens have problems with focus, maybe I'm just lucky. It's a perfect lens, the autofocus in dim lights is accurate than my 85mm 1.4G.
