The AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Lens from Nikon delivers crisp, clear and non-distorted images with a versatile set of wide-angle focal lengths. It is a lens often found in the kits of working photojournalists due to its comprehensive wide-angle coverage, relative light weight and durability. On DX format DSLRs it provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 24-52.5mm. The optical design features 17 lens elements in 12 groups and includes 2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) and 3 aspherical elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion and lend high contrast images. Nano Crystal Coating virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths and reduces flare and ghosting.

Fast, accurate and quiet autofocus is accomplished via Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and Internal Focus (IF) enables fast autofocus without changing the length of the lens, retaining working distance throughout the focus range. Manual focus override allows for precise control over critical focus even when in AF mode. The VR II image stabilization system reduces the blur caused by camera shake enabling 2.5 shutter speed stops of compensation in dim light. Practically, this means that handheld shooting is possible in almost all situations. The lens also features a rounded 9-blade diaphragm which creates a natural appearance in out-of-focus areas of your images.

The Nano Crystal lens coating reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity.

Perfect Ultra-Wide Lens for Nikon FX

First, I bought this lens to use on my D700. Please stop reading the rest of this review if you're thinking to use it on a DX body - you're wasting my time and your money :D

Second, B&H delivered it on time & item appears to be exact out of the box as it was listed on their website.

Here are my thoughts about this lens:
[1] Fast FOCUS and very SHARP: I don't have to fix the sharpness of my photos during post-processing anymore.
[2] Its VR feature does really work: for low light condition, I can still take photos 1/10s handheld, no problem!
[3] Its WEIGHT is negligible: I don't know what others complain about. I haven't seen/used any pro lens that weighs like a kit lens. Please remember this is a pro lens (see its gold ring?) so expect it to be a bit heavier than your average lenses. And if you can't truly stand its weight, maybe you shouldn't be shooting Nikon. Switch to more-plastic built Canon perhaps?
[4] FILTER compatible: it takes 77mm filters. It is very important for my landscape photography.
[5] Great PRICE for a pro lens: I would definitely save money and pay a few hundred extra dollars just to step up to this pro lens from those normal zoom lenses that already cost ~$700-800.
[6] A tad LONGER than one would expect, so your camera's built-in flash may have an issue since this lens will cause lens shadow in your photos. However, mounted flashes should be fine.
[7] Simply Great QUALITY by Nikon: feels great in my hands, and truly sings on the D700. If your budget allows, just buy this lens - you won't regret it!

I bought this lens as an alternative to buying a 14-24, which is just a little out of my price range. I had read some great reviews on this lens and tried it out shortly at a local camera store. After owning it for a week, I had to return this lens... maybe I got a bad copy, but my corner sharpness was abysmal. I know this lens needs to be stopped down and is not going to be sharp at f/4, but even images I was taking at f/8 (the supposed sweet spot where the lens cleans up) looked like the edges of the frame just slopped right off.

It might be one thing if you're only going to shooting far off landscapes where the corners are on a similar focal plane as the rest of the image, but for using in any situation where your surrounding environment has some depth, I was never able to achieve satisfactory results with this lens. I know part of this is due to curvature of the field of view, but it seemed more than that.

Besides this, center sharpness was superb, tonal contrast very good, lens flare well controlled, VR worked great. There is of course considerable distortion at 16mm, and some of the weak corners will be cropped off if you do a lens correction profile in LR. But between the massive distortion and the poor corner performance when stopped down, I had to send this lens back, it simply wasn't worth the price... Right now it's on sale, and it may be worth it so some, but for me, I'm going to either save up for the 14-24, or go ahead and go back to the Samyang 14 f/2.8, which is a pretty sweet manual lens for a great price.

      Terrific Lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I was on the fence about this lens for some time and decided to pull the trigger. I sold my 5 year old 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 VR II and used the money to purchase this lens and the 70-200 f4 and could not be happier. I am not a professional I am a casual vacation photographer who does not need the flexibility or weight of the 2.8 lenses. This lens is sharp and thank god for VR. Can not complain about anything yet.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I love the wide zoom range and VR for dark interiors. On a recent visit to Mission San Miguel it was wide enough at 16 for the interiors and the VR allowed me to keep ISO low for dynamic range with slow shutters.

Along with the 70-200/4 and my 50/1.8G or 24-85/VR, I can cover most situations with a small kit and wonderful IQ.

I was concerned about the size and ergonomics of this lens, but find that I don't mind given it's capabilities. It's just a bit lighter than the 105 micro and feels better in the hand because of it's shape.

It's extremely sharp, but really does need lens correction in PP. Since I shoot raw and have the benefits of taking time with PP, this isn't an issue.

Focus is fast and accurate. Very little distortion even at 16 mm. Balances well on my D610 with battery grip. The VR works great for hand holding those landscape shots. The build quality seems to be top notch and I like that it uses a 77 mm filter like so many of my other Nikon lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

Since converting to FX (D800) from DX (D7000) format three years ago, I've shot most of my landscape photography with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens and have been quite satisfied with those results. Admittedly though, I have missed shooting wider landscape photos with my old Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens, which afforded me that extra depth, special effects and prospective. This Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4 ED VR lens has added a whole new dimension of photographic opportunities, reminiscent of my old DX 10-24mm photos. After reading all the reviews comparing this lens to the Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 lens, I opted for the newer f/4 VR version and feel quite confident that I have made the correct price/performance decision. As for the infamous lens argument of "plastic" verses metal outer shell material, I'm perfectly happy with this lens's state-of-the-art polycarbonate technology.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

This is one of those lenses that you don't really know you want until you have one. Or, in my case, borrow one. Before using it, I was sure this lens was a waste of time and money. Until I actually used one. Wow.

If you like ultra-wides, you're going to love this lens. Does it distort the image? At 16mm it sure does, but that's the entire point. And besides, Lightroom can mitigate that with ease. Is it a bit soft in the corners? Yes, a little. So, don't shoot it wide open. This is a perfect lens when your 24-70 is not quite wide enough, and a fisheye is out of the question.
It does come with a very silly lens hood, and is not as breathtakingly sharp as the 24-70. Still, it's fast becoming one of my favorites.

I debated in getting this or the 14-24. I thought this would be smaller but its really pretty close to the size of the 14-24. Main reason was price, which with the rebate was $ less, and the ability to add filters and use the lens hood. Very happy with the lens and look forward to taking some great landscape shots with it.

Love this lens so far. Auto focus is quick and accurate. Sharp wide open but seems best at f/8 - f/11. A little on the heavy side for a wide angle but not bad. VR works great but since I have it on a tripod more often than not its not a real selling point for me. Very slight distortion easily correctable in post.

I am mainly a wedding photographer but bought this lens specifically for shooting interiors of houses. It works great on my D810, but wasn't overly happy when I noticed some distortion at the edges. The distortion is very little, but it's still there. When shooting interiors, lines and angles are very important and bother me if they aren't completely straight.

Otherwise I love using it at wedding dances, it is a great addition to my collection. It is a little heavy also.

Very sharp lens. The VR works well and I can take night photos without a tripod. The lens is kind of bulky but not too heavy.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I use this lens primarily for underwater photography and video. The zoom range is great for shooting pelagics (eg sharks, whales, etc.), and it also comes in handy when shooting video. Most wide-angle underwater photos are shot with a fisheye lens, but this lens allows me to keep straight lines straight when shooting things like oil rigs and shipwrecks.

Great lens. Perfect range for landscape photography, and when you're shooting landscape, f/4 isn't a big deal. I was between this and the 17-35 f/2.8, but at the end of the day this lens is just WAY more sharp at pretty much all f-stops. I would buy this again in a heart beat.
