I was recently in the market for a battery grip (shooting Formula Drift from 8 AM to 8 PM, nearly non-stop) and after much research, finally decided on the OEM Canon battery grip. Now, I can't speak to the quality of other third-party grips, but I can speak to the quality of this grip. The weight, feel, and quality of the grip is second to none. The solid build gave me a confidence that allowed me to not worry about holding a 70-200 lens on my body by this grip alone. The problems with electrical connectors and the screw stripping out on third party versions of this grip were non-existent and I had no problem inserting two batteries into the clip, the clip into the grip, and the grip into the camera. The grip actually has a small slot to hold the battery compartment door (you remove it to insert the grip's battery analog). Little details like that are why the small difference in price was worth it.Finally, the additional size and portrait-orientation shutter and backside buttons gave me a whole new lease on my camera body. I have large hands, and this grip gave the camera some much needed girth and heft to feel like a more solid and stable piece of equipment.

This battery grip attached nicely to a Rebel T3i, with color and texture to match the camera body. It has storage for the body's battery door and an attachment point for a hand strap.

There is an extra set of controls for portrait shooting. This is a useful feature and the grip is tolerable for hand-held shooting vertically.

Unfortunately, it is bulky for this small camera body and its portruding corners get to be a problem for the hands when shooting landscape. It interferes with the left hand while zooming and puts a pressure point on the palm of the right, near the wrist. It necessitates a larger camera bag if one is to be used.

Loaded with two lithium batteries, the balance of the camera is awful with either a short or normal lens. It adds weight, and if the idea is to extend battery life, it best be mounted on a tripod or the camera will get to be a burden.

I was going to use this for long days of shooting out in the field, but have given up on this idea. Instead, it will stay in the cupboard while I pocket extra batteries and shoulder the camera in a nice compact case.

I could see where this would be helpful for prolonged tripod video shooting with live view eating up power, but for other types of use it has its downsides.

Comments about Canon BG-E8 Battery Grip for EOS Rebel T-Series Digital Cameras:

I've had three off brand battery grips, one was a no name brand for my T1i, one was an Opteka for my T3i and the Meike I had been using with my T4i. Of these three, the Opteka was better and was supposedly made on the same molds as the Canon battery grip. I don't know about that but, I do know that the Canon BG-E8 battery grip is the best one I have ever used. The shutter release button is precise. The dial sounds and feels just like the dial on the camera body. When the camera with the Canon BG-E8 battery grip installed is attached to a tripod (Slik SH-807E head or an Oben BE-126T ball head), the interface is rock solid. All the other battery grips had a bit of wobble. I had to use shutter lockup to prevent blurred images. The BG-E8 grip eliminates the need to do that. Those with really small hands (as measured on a glove sizing chart, I used the one on a box of nitrile gloves, my hands are medium) may find this grip a bit difficult to hold. This would be the case with all of them as they are larger than the camera grip because they house the batteries. Last but not least, the Canon BG-E8 battery grip is made in Taiwan, all the others were made in China. Yes, Taiwan has higher manufacturing standards than mainland China. Even the on/off switch has a more solid fee. I remember when the BG-E8 battery grip was selling for $ or even $ on some sites, it was difficult to justify but, at $, don't hesitate.

The battery grip adds weight and bulk to your camera, but is a nice addition and makes handling the camera easier. Gives you a better griping surface. The vertical shutter button is also great and makes composing your vertical shots easier.

Loving my BG! Performs as it's supposed to! Covered an entire day wedding, from Bride's makeup till the night party with my t5i / 24-70mm lens / 600ex-rt Speedlite Flash.
Feels awesome, gives a plus on the weight to the camera and makes it feel sturdier, also great when capturing video with AA batteries (6 white eneloop), or even RAW video with ML (720p cropped).
Super practical when shooting portrait (vertical) with the second shutter, Av buttons abd speed wheel makes life easier!!

Comments about Canon BG-E8 Battery Grip for EOS Rebel T-Series Digital Cameras:

This is the no nonsense version of the batter grip. The finish matches and the button function is perfect. The Battery tray holds 2 LP-E8's or you can load it up with AA's if you want (there is two draws that it comes with). The batter trap door pops off really easy from the standard camera body and it even has a little slip in piece to hold that door for you so it doesn't go missing... This does make your camera body a bit more bulky and a bit heaver, but that is pretty obvious right folks? Over all this is one of the best accessories I have purchased for my T5i to date... super comfy, super efficent, super quality. Thanks B&H !!

I use my Canon EOS T5i for lots of photos and video. This battery pack works great for both, is convenient and easy to use and allows me to take lots of video without running out of power. As an older woman I thought the extra weight would be an issue but the extra weight actually adds balance with longer lenses.

I put Canon battery grips on every DSLR I own or use. It adds much-needed balancing weight to the rear of the camera to help offset lens weight. Plus, it extends shooting time without having to change out batteries. I generally can shoot more than 2,000 photos on one set of batteries using this grip (of course, camera settings influences battery life, as well).

Comments about Canon BG-E8 Battery Grip for EOS Rebel T-Series Digital Cameras:

Adding this to the Canon T5i really makes the camera easier to hold when you have large hands like I do. Also stabilizes camera when you put on the long lens. also like the fact I can take a vertical shot without raising your arm. it has provisions for 6 AA batteries to two of the canon batteries, two ways to power the camera.

Solid build and ease of use make this a no-brainer. It was worth it for me to spend more for Canon quality. I've used it half a dozen times now and I'm very pleased.

I think that, everyone who checks out this battery grip knows what it does. But, there's one feature that no one has thought about: comfort. This battery grip extends your dslr and if you have big hands, you've experienced that your hand doesn't fit the original grip. Otherwise, it works like a charm!
