Genustech 52mm Neutral Density Fader Filter

B&H # GEGNDF52 Mfr # GNDF-52
No Longer Available
Product Highlights
  • 0.6-2.4 Variable Neutral Density Filter
  • Reduce Exposure by 2-8 Stops
  • Greater Control Over Exposure Settings
  • Larger Front Threads Reduce Vignetting
  • Indexed Markings and Filter Ring Handle
  • Optical Glass Construction
  • Aluminum Filter Ring

The Genustech 52mm Neutral Density Fader Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing an exposure reduction of approximately 2 to 8 stops. The 0.6 to 2.4 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The filter is constructed from optical glass for high image quality and features an aluminum filter ring for rigidity and to prevent filter jamming. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, a small handle is available for easier manipulation of the values and the front ring is also visually demarcated with dots that represent different density values. The front 58mm female threads of the filter are two standard sizes larger than the rear 52mm male threads to help minimize vignetting.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.
0.6 to 2.4 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a reduction of 2 to 8 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Filter does not affect coloration of the image.
Optical glass construction maintains high image quality and aluminum filter ring works to prevent filter jamming.

I use this for video, where the shutter speed is basically fixed and you often need to cut the amount of light to keep the aperture where you want it. The filter is easy to use. The markings on mine aren't particularly accurate, but I basically adjust it by eye and histogram anyway. The main drawback is that the filter introduces a significant color cast. Compared to the green channel, it cuts blue significantly more and red a bit more. Since you're somewhat limited in the ability to adjust white balance after the fact in video, you need to lock down the white balance at the beginning. But because of the color cast, your camera's presets probably aren't of much use. You'll need a grey card to set a custom WB after mounting the filter. If I could do it over again, I think I'd either spring for a more expensive but neutral variable filter, or just buy something like a fixed 3- or 4-stop filter that would likely not have such a color cast.

Comments about Genustech 52mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

I've been using the filter primarily to shoot waterfalls and it does a very nice job. At the highest filter setting you do see the cross pattern that has come up in other reviews and which I planned for. But up to that point the picture is perfect and the color is rich. I have two concerns though. Genus uses some kind of grease to seal between the two filters and I am already seeing it start to creep down the inner rings after just a few days of shooting at temperatures in the 90's. I'm a bit concerned it will make it to the glass. Since the filter can't be disassembled (at least it doesn't look like it)that will pretty much kill it. Only time will tell. The other odd thing is that it seems that the Genus threads are just a bit too good. They will not screw into my OM5 without using a lot of torque so I had to put an adapter ring in because I was afraid of ruining the OM5 filter threads. The best I can tell is that both the OM5 and Genus have very good thread tolerance so they conflict with each other. Any other filter combo I've used works just fine. The waterfalls pictures though have been very pleasing and a lot of fun. There are huge possibilities here. I'd recommend a fader to anyone but I will have to wait and see what happens with that grease before I can honestly recommend this one.

Comments about Genustech 52mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

If you don't mind color shifts and an occasional "X" pattern at certain settings, this is a convenient filter for controlling exposure. It doesn't seem to impact resolution to any great degree. It is fairly easy to use, but can't be used with existing lens hoods. It is certainly less expensive than some overpriced models. It seems well made and sturdy.

Comments about Genustech 52mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

I got this variable ND filter after watching an online shoot-out review between it and other comparable filters. It wasn't the most expensive but it held its own with the most expensive options when it came to clarity, color, vignetting, and bokeh texture. Plus, it's one of the few that have front threads. This is essential for me because I don't have a matte box for my camera so I must use screw-on sun hoods for outdoor photography. So far this little filter hasn't let me down.

With my camera, the minimum setting on the filter gives me 2 stops and the maximum gives me 6 or 7. However, most of the effect comes from moving the setting toward the maximum end; about half of the markings appear to make no or little difference to my camera's meter. It beats carrying multiple filters, but it's less precise than I expected it to be.

I use this with a Nokton 25mm on an EPL2 MFT for both video and stills.

It works great for shooting stills with the lens wide open in daylight to prevent over exposure. F-0.95 is impossible to shoot in bright daylight without some type of ND filter.

As mentioned in another review, it does mess with the color, but it is fixable with proper WB.

Comments about Genustech 52mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

This filter is a great addition to your lens collection - allowing you to shoot at very open apertures in bright conditions. The only problem I have with the filter is that it does vignette when you really stop it down. So beware of that. I know you can stop it down at least 4 stops with no problems at all...

Overall - I would buy this product again.
