Product Highlights
  • 0.6-2.4 Variable Neutral Density Filter
  • Reduce Exposure by 2-8 Stops
  • Greater Control Over Exposure Settings
  • Larger Front Threads Reduce Vignetting
  • Indexed Markings and Filter Ring Handle
  • Optical Glass Construction
  • Aluminum Filter Ring

The Genustech 72mm Neutral Density Fader Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing an exposure reduction of approximately 2 to 8 stops. The 0.6 to 2.4 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The filter is constructed from optical glass for high image quality and features an aluminum filter ring for rigidity and to prevent filter jamming. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, a small handle is available for easier manipulation of the values and the front ring is also visually demarcated with dots that represent different density values. The front 82mm female threads of the filter are two standard sizes larger than the rear 72mm male threads to help minimize vignetting.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.
0.6 to 2.4 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a reduction of 2 to 8 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Filter does not affect coloration of the image.
Optical glass construction maintains high image quality and aluminum filter ring works to prevent filter jamming.

This filter is built very well, it is tuff, rugged and great looking piece of glass. It is so easy to use and of course it is many filters in one.
The picture quality is great even on cloudy days and sunsets.
Two things that you need to pay attention to, one: Don't put any other filter between this (GENUS) and the lens, especially on wide-angle lenses such as 18-200mm, because you are going to see those unwanted annoying dark corners, especially when the lens is wide opened.
two: Don't keep it at it's darkest fade, because you are going to get some kind of X shape dark spot through out your picture. so turn it slightly to the right or to the left of its darkest.

The only thing I don't like about this great filter is that the lens cap is too small for it (because the outer part of it is wider than the lense's) and unfortunately it doesn't come with a cap to protect it from dust or similar things.

I primarily would use this with video. Just finished a day shoot with this filter and there is simply no sharpness past the first two stops. The front mount is too large to accommodate lens hoods and the glass is just too thick. Was using this in combination with Canon L Primes which are sharp as a tack and on 10x magnification on 160 ISO I had terrible noise.

Just buy the Tiffen ring mounts and take the extra minute to swap out for the correct ND.

Comments about Genustech 72mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

A truly useful item for the photo enthusiast that will have only occasional need for its properties but wants "good" or better performance when it is used. As soon as I received this filter I tested it using a focus target and found that it degraded sharpness a mere 7% (based on lines per inch sharply reproduced at 200mm with my 18-200mm Nikkor lens). What's more it maintained that level of sharpness throughout its filter range. I had fully expected that performance would deteriorate at higher ND density but I found no change in sharpness throughout the filters range.

Comments about Genustech 72mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

I actually generally liked this product and think is good value for what you get. Being a bit of a strobist, love that you can use a 50mm at f1.4 in strong daylight for nice low depth of field. However, sorely dissapointed after a recent outdoor photo-shoot using a strob with 70-200 lens, at 200mm f2.8. Models fill around 1/2 to 2/3rds of the frame (D600)- however on closer examination of results, eyes are not sharp at all (almost like a soft-focus filter), and I thought that I had focusing problems, until realized all pics with the fader on had the same problem. I never noticed this effect on the 50mm shots (maybe wasn't looking hard enough), but can easily see with 200mm. Tested this afterwards with and without fader, and can clearly see difference at 200mm. I have read online how this may happen at higher focal lengths, and I cannot see anywhere that one fader is better than another in this respect, so not saying that Genus is not as good as other faders. Appears best way forward is to use quality non-variable ND's, even though will be more of a hassle.

Either I have bad luck with these type of filters or I just got a bad one because this did not work on my D600. It had spots all over the lens when I moved it around. Don't both just spend your money on something better.

I wanted to like this, but unfortunately it only worked well for me at the lightest settings. When I tried long exposures at the darker settings, the filter created uneven dark patches on my image. Maybe I needed to keep working at it, but I ultimately ended up purchasing the darkest B+W ND filter and have had great results with that.

I use this product with Canon XHA1s video camera. Its great cause I can shoot all day with the same shutter speed and a given aperture. But it has some downsides: For some reason the filter thread doesn't fit directly into the camera lens, I have to use another filter before the ND. The camera lens hood won't fit with this ND filter on.

I use the filter when I'm shooting on location and want to work with a large aperture. The fact that I have 8 stops I can choose from, is great because it saves me a lot of time in changing between different filters.
The only remark I can make about the filter, is that it keeps turning. I would like it to stop turning when I come to the 8th stop and vice versa. But that is really all I can think of that could be improved. Otherwise a great buy!!

I had to return this variable ND filter, as when I put it on my sigma EF 50-150mm lens, the focus was never pristine. I dont know if it was cheaper glass and didnt work with my zoom, or if my lens doesn't work well with variable ND's. Buyer beware.

Comments about Genustech 72mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

the ND fader is IMHO is best thing i've ever bought! it allows for a larger aperture in extremely bright situations which normally calls for a smaller aperture which would reduce DOF. this allows for awesome bokeh in the bright sun! nicely priced too!

This is as simple as it gets. You are on a shoot on a sunny day and want a shallow depth of field. You slap on this filter and BOOM you can basically set your camera to any settings you desire and the filter will do the rest. Best filter I have ever purchased

Comments about Genustech 72mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

I use it for reducing light so that I can open up the iris on my DSLR, and for using a more optimized f-stop when shooting the sun.

There are no stops, just continuously adjustable ND with reference marks.

Nothing bad to say about this product.

                                        Great product,

Finally i found a way to create depth of field images while using strong strobes in the day time. Colors seem to change a little bit more muted with this filter, but i like the deeper tones. Therefore, it worked out perfect for me. Great product, convenient, well made for relatively low price (compare to buying a bunch of individually ND filters). Highly recommended.

The first polarising filter is set incorrectly on this filter causing a variety of color shifts depending on where the filter binds on the lens. This can be corrected by having proper alignment of the two rotating filters. (correct reversal alignment in manufacture) You would think the GENUS company would have better quality control in manufacture.
