The 82mm ND Fader Filter from Genus is unique in the world of neutral density filters. Other companies make you buy individual ND filters to meet your needs (i.e. 1-stop, 2-stop, etc.). Genus provides one filter that generates 2-8 stops of neutral density depending on how it is rotated.
In addition, the filter is indexed so you know exactly how many stops of neutral density you are getting. It screws on like any other filter and with a mere twist of the convenient rotating handle on the filter ring, you dial in your filtration. No need to constantly change filters - as the light changes, just dial in another grade of filtration.
Neutral Density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

If you do landscape and scenery photography this filter is a must have. I have a minus 2 ND filter but was not enough to do long time exposures in daylight. This filter does exactly what it was designed to do. Cuts light anywhere between 2 to 8 f/stops. So far I have not experienced any unwanted effects. It works very smoothly and seems very rugged. I bought this filter because we produce "how to" videos on photography and am very happy with the results. A quick tip for photographers who want to avoid vignetting with full frame cameras and ultra wide angle lenses. Buy an over sized filter and a step up ring. I have 16mm to 35mm lens on my canon 5D II. The filter size for this lens is 77mm but I bought an 82mm with a step up ring. Even at the 16mm setting there is NO vignetting. Life is Good!

This review is based on one 82mm Genus Fader ND I received from B&H.
As I start to stop the filter down, in the middle of the way, the image quality degrades significantly. The sharpness is lost, as if one applied a blur filter. As it is stopped down further, the colors start to change quite dramatically (I have not reached the MAX yet).
In the MAX settings, it is much worse and I would not call it a useful image at all. There's flare, internal reflections etc.
All this is based on 1Ds Mark III body and (1) 17-40mm lens, (2) Zeiss 100mm f/2 Macro Planar.
I would not recommend this product. Waste of my time and return shipping cost.

Comments about Genustech 82mm ND (Neutral Density) Fader Filter:
The filter works great! I use it for shooting weddings in bright sun. Very useful for group shots when it's not possible to shoot in shade.
The only thing I would change is to mark the different stops with numbers insead of just dots.
All-in-all a great product.

Comments about Genustech 82mm ND (Neutral Density) Fader Filter:
I have owned this one and the 82mm Mark II Variable Neutral Density Filter by Fader. Both are great filters, optics are good - not without some clarity loss but it's a filter. I prefer the Genus over the Fader as the ring you use to rotate the actual filter and remove it from the lens is much bigger. I would occasionally struggle to remove the Fader filter due to the tiny ring but with the Genus it's a nice thick gnarled ring.

I've only had it a few days but am very happy with the filter. It's really well built, comes in a reasonable case and works very well.
Easy to operate and being able to 'dial' up the amount of light into the lens is excellent! I bought a step-up adapter to use with my 77mm lenses, so it works on all my other glass.
Really good purchase.

Comments about Genustech 82mm ND (Neutral Density) Fader Filter:
I'm using this filter with a Canon 5d Mark II and it works great. There is no noticeable change in color when using the filter. The use of the filter gives you the ability to have a shallower depth of field in bright sunlight.
If you have several lenses, I recommend purchasing the larger size and using step up rings with your smaller diameter lenses.

Comments about Genustech 82mm ND (Neutral Density) Fader Filter:
If you're shooting video on a DSLR, these come in handy--lets you keep a shallow DOF but also, you can use it as a kind of iris control. That is, in camera, or even if your lens has an aperture ring, if you adjust the iris, it won't be smooth. If you go from one lighting environment to another in a shot, just turn the filter to adjust the iris smoothly.
Unfortunately, I've found that the minimum ND is just too dark to use in a normal indoor lighting situation--unless you add lights to the scene. Additionally, I found out after I got the filter that your existing lens cap won't fit on the filter--so if you plan to keep it on all the time, you'll need to buy a larger lens cap.

Comments about Genustech 82mm ND (Neutral Density) Fader Filter:
I used the filter to do a daytime streak shot of a space shuttle launch. I wanted all the ND the Genus filter would provide plus some additional ND filters. The filter is touted as a 2 - 8 stop variable ND filter. Realistically, it is good for 6 stops. Past that and you get some strange interactions between the two polarizers that make up this filter. There are light and dark spots in the image when you go past 6 stops. However, I was able to add another 2-stop ND filter to the stack and shoot a 25 second exposure in bright daylight of a rocket launch. I don't think it has been done before. I intend to refine the technique on the last two shuttle launches.
I am very satisfied for the price of this filter. Up to the 6-stop point, it is very good. I think it will see a lot of use in landscape photography in the future.
My only real complaint (other than not really making it cleanly to 8 stops) is I wish the markings on the filter were shown in stops. It doesn't work out evenly no matter how you divide up the tic marks on the filter.

Comments about Genustech 82mm ND (Neutral Density) Fader Filter:
After doing a lot of research for a cost effective solution I decided to pick up this filter for my newly purchased 16-35mm f/2.8 II. The fact that it comes with a little threaded handle to smoothly slide from 2 to 8 stops is quite convenient. On top of that it doesn't seem to have any color shifting through out the different stops!
The only complaints I do have, is the cross filter effect (where you get an X effect) but then again with all variable ND filters it seems thats one of the compromises and having to find a lens cap.
Overall
It's a great value and doesn't feel loose or cheap when using it.
A well built and a good product for the price value.

Slapped this on a 5D with a fast 50mm for daytime shooting. Go from 2-8 stops of ND with a flick of your finger - this is a no-brainer! Well built, solid product, already saved me hours of time that I would have used to switch filters. If you shoot dSLR video, you need this.

This filter is a step above the Singh Ray at half the cost!!! I have used Singh Ray a TON, and yes they are great.... but this filter is far above what I expected. It's "silver post" makes adjusting the filter very easy. There is no color shift with this filter, and it works better than I thought!!
