I ordered this product because I was not satisfied with the Hoodloupe 3.0, and didn't quite want to pay for the Z-Finder.Three major things made it worlds above the Hoodloupe: Eyecup: This doesn't sounds like a big deal, but after using the Hoodman for a short period of time, but my left and right eyes were sore from straining. The LCDVF has a large rubber eyecup and ships with an eye chamois. Very, very comfortable. Again, doesn't sound huge, but really makes a difference.Magnification: The Z-Finder with 3x magnification is awesome, no doubt. But for much cheaper, the 2x magnification still does and excellent job of helping find focus. The hoodman, with no magnification, caused a lot of straining. Mounting: The straps of the Hoodloupe broke within 2 minutes of putting them on. Way to cheap, what were they thinking? I also used the Hoodloupe in conjunction with my eye spy deluxe, using redrock's loupe accessory kit. But the time I had adjusted the diopter to fit my perfect vision, the mount did not hold the Hoodloupe tightly to the screen. It would slip sideways and light would leak through. The magnets feel very secure against the frame of the LCDVF, and allow me to pull off the loupe quickly, unlike the Hoodloupe with the redrock accessory.I did like the rubbery exterior to the Hoodloupe. The outside of the LCDVF is plastic, and feels cheap. Not a deal breaker though. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because of the lack of diopter. I have perfect vision, so it doesn't matter to me, but can see how it would be helpful to others. The lack of a diopter adds to the simplicity of the product. Less things to break. For 50 bucks more, much better than the Hoodloupe.

The viewfinder provides a distortion free view, and perfect magnification. The issues I've had with it include the metal frame not staying on camera (followed instructions exactly), and the light bouncing around inside the shiny plastic interior.

If they fixed the adhesive issue and add matte finish inside viewfinder, it would be at least four stars

Seemed like a good deal (considering the other options). Thinking of getting the "Z" finder now...

The viewfinder is most helpful during the day shooting outside. I use it to see the screen perfectly and eliminate glare. However, the image in general seems less crisp than it does on my 5D's screen itself. The magnet system is great - super easy to put on and take off. Definitely a good buy.

Comments about Kinotehnik LCDVF Digital SLR Viewfinder:

The Kinotehnik Viewfinder is a great and affordable way to help make sure your subject is in focus, but most of all it's a great way to see your LCD screen in daylight when you're shooting outdoors.

I work as a professional cameraman, often using a wide variety of high end cameras, but over the past years SLRs have really made their 'Mark' and many clients are in love with the Canon's 5D series. The images the Mark II or III create are often beautiful, but most of my clients are sold by the low cost associate with them.

I eventually caved and bought one myself. And I now love my 5D for several reasons. It's great for all kinds of shooting, I like the small size, the full frame chip produces that film look with its super narrow depth of field, and on and on. But after years of freelance shooting I was very accustom to shoulder mounted cameras and it's taken me awhile to embrace the Still-Camera form factor. But I'm finding tools along the way to make it easier—one of them being Kinotehnik's LCDVF.
Recently, on a very bright and sunny afternoon, I was shooting a guy installing a high-tech light bulb on a lighting tower in a public parking lot. I was shooting way up in the air squished in the bucket of a cherry picker. In spite of my best attempts to shade the LCD viewfinder (I made a sad looking sunshield from thin black plastic and gaffers tape the night before), I couldn't see it at all. Instead my refection stared back at me with a look not unlike panic. And as I regained my composure, the refection seemed to snarl and say, 'I'm glad you insisted on using your favorite lens, doofus." And the sarcastic me was right, I was shooting with my favorite lens, a 70-200mm. With it's very narrow depth of field—at roughly two inches—keeping focus would be nearly impossible without a usable viewfinder.
I winged it and, after watching the footage with the director, everything turned out ok, but I didn't want to get caught in a similar situation again. In my car immediately after the shoot, I first threw out my "Drunk-MacGyver" sun-shade and looked up B&H on my phone. I needed a solution that was affordable and compact enough to fit in my Pelican airplane carry-on size camera case. I considered all of the options, even buying one of the more expensive solutions—finding in the past that buying cheaper gear almost always ended up costing double, the price of the knock-off and the price of the more expensive one that actually worked). But in this case the Kinotehnik viewfinder was both. I've used Zacuto's viewfinder and it works great, but for my taste, it has too many extra parts you have to buy separately or things that can easily go missing. And the VF's that were actual LCD screens themselves were too expensive for what they were, I thought, 'Why not just buy a small monitor for that price?' Other were too big, or not right. In the end, I chose Kinotehnik's LCDVF. It was perfect for what I needed and it works great. The best uses for it and reasons I like it are:

              1. It's great in sunlight and I won't shoot outdoors without it.

              2. A thin rectangular piece of magnetic metal adheres like a sticker to the back of your camera's body and the VF easily and securely snaps on and off (an extra one is included, cool).

              3. Also, included is a lanyard ring so you can wear it around you neck freeing your hands allowing you to attach the VF only when needed (Bonus: It looks similar to a directors viewfinder and clients may be inadvertently impressed).

              4. I find the 2x optical magnification of this LCDVF useful and reassuring. As far as checking one's focus, you're physically limited to the number of pixels in the LCD screen. And the magnification button feature on the 5D is great way around this. But once that little red light starts flashing, the magnification button is no longer an option. I now find myself more and more often attaching the LCDVF for my own piece of mind.

I'm pleased with my purchase and I would recommend it.

              Thanks B&H and Kinotehnik!

The LCDVF seemed to be a quality made product - durable, well fit, and good optics. BUT: you need to have either perfect eyesight or reading glasses. I wear eyeglasses with a progressive lens (reading glass portion at the bottom with a correction of 2.75) and it was impossible for me to get the LCD in focus without removing my eye from the eyecup several inches. I use the optical viewfinder on my 5DII with no problem, but it has a diopter control. I never realized how important that was until I tried to use the LCDVF. Dang - I really wanted it to work. I sent this one back, but I'll buy one when they put a diopter control on it.

This viewfinder works much better than the Zacuto z-finder jr. I purchased and returned. The magnetic mounting never fails and holds fast on my T3i. My only wish is for an adjustable diopter or the ability to add 4-5 mm "frames" between the VF and mount to adjust the focal distance. It works very well with glasses on or off. Solidly built.

This was so great to have to shoot video outside. Between blocking the light and magnifying to help with focus, it was a huge help. The magnetic attaching mechanism is fast and perfect. My only problem is the first time I used it was in hot, humid Indonesia. Within about 2 seconds of looking though it, the glass would immediately fog up. I hadn't attached the microfiber pad, thinking it was just for comfort. But I suspect it might help avoid that problem had I used it.

It works great for stationary shots but it falls off so easily that it makes it hard to do and moving shots. It fell off and one of the magnets fell out and was lost. Now it falls off if I raise or lower the tripod. My advice is save up for the Zacuto. Pay the price once and have something that will last.

Comments about Kinotehnik LCDVF Digital SLR Viewfinder:

I originally purchased this Viewfinder to use with my Canon 5D2 when shooting stills on location... Was pleasantly surprised to find that it also fits the lcd screen on my Hasselblad H3DII perfectly!

If any of you have shot with a Hasselblad H series camera on location, you'll know that in direct sunlight the screen is pretty much useless.... This viewfinder makes the screen highly visible!

The mounting plate supplied with the VF is a tight fit on the back of the H3D but it does fit & allows access to all controls.

The optics are great... the fit is secure with the magnets...

This LCDVF is really disappointed me because I bought this after reading many positive feedbacks. Design is pretty impressive but the view is very unclear and grainy... may be I received a bad copy. I just waste the money on it.

This product has been so helpful for us. It makes focusing and minimizing picture noise so much easier. I would recommend to anyone that does video. The only disappointment is that it can sometimes get in your way when hanging around your neck but that's just me complaining.

Excellent view finder for my 7D and 5D setups -- They were smart enough to include a second mounting bracket so I can flip between two cameras -- and it was a breeze to set up -- finally someone beta tested their product before selling it -- better focus and quality than the knock offs -- Rocks! zzzzzzz

Comments about Kinotehnik LCDVF Digital SLR Viewfinder:

I bought this for my 7d for filming and I was VERY disappointed because it is not sharp for me. I am not sure if this is my eyes (I am 16 and didn't know my eyes was bad) or just low quality glass. I used to think it was because I had a protection screen on my camera but taking it away didn't help.
Even tho it is not 100% sharp for me it is still a useful product because it really helps with stabilizing handheld and if filming in the sun a viewfinder is really a must have product, but if your ordering this make sure to test it and send it back if its not sharp for you.
I am saving up for a Zacuto Z-Finder and if you have the money or can save up some more cash I would recommend that you do this!

I am currently using this with my Nikon D7000 and it is wonderful! It makes focusing and exposure so much easier than the bare LCD.Pros:-The viewfinder clips nicely onto the metal frame and always aligns perfectly.-2x magnification is a great amount for seeing everything in the frame and pulling focus effectively.-Works great outdoors and in bright light-Very clear optics and a nice eye-cup-Price-Solidly BuiltCons:-Small wiggle between metal frame and magnets. I assume this is just an issue with my unit. But it is nothing that I can't deal with.-No Diopter adjustment. I have contacts, but it would still be nice to have the option there. This is a solidly built product that does what it is supposed to. I personally didn't want to spend $350 on a Letus35 viewfinder when I could have this for under $. If you are looking for a nice viewfinder that is solidly built and will do what you need it to, then this is the one for you.

If you own the Canon 60D, be sure to click elsewhere on this site for the 3/2 sized version, since it has a different sized LCD screen than the 5D Mark II and its companions.

Otherwise, this tool is essential for shooting outdoors to block out light and for enlarging the LCD so you can achieve critical focus and also feel more immersed while composing the shot. It also gives you yet one more point of stability for less shaky shots. I don't leave home without it. I also don't wear glasses or need a diopter, so for me this product is great and the Zacuto Z-Finder is way overpriced.

Used mainly outdoors for filming on the river or in the mountains. Hang it around your neck and snap it on whenever you need to dial in your focus or if you can't see your lcd well. A great 3rd point of contact for on the run handheld shooting.
