Product Highlights
  • Angled Viewing
  • Multicoated Optics
  • 45° Erect-Image Diagonal
  • Erect-Image 8x21 Finderscope
  • 32mm Eyepiece - 39x Magnification
  • Standard Tripod Mount

The compact and highly-portable C90 MAK Spotting Scope from Celestron is a powerful spotting scope with a Maksutov-Cassegrain optical path, a 32mm eyepiece, and an erect-image 45° diagonal that also corrects the view laterally. Because the finderscope and the diagonal both provide corrected images, the C90 is an excellent choice for terrestrial and astronomy viewing.

The 32mm Plossl eyepiece provides the user with a remarkable 39x magnification. Higher levels of magnification and wider fields of view can be experienced by substituting the included eyepiece with appropriate 1.25" astronomy ocular.

The C90 comes with an erect image 8x21 finderscope that provides a wider FOV to aid the viewer in locating subjects and targets easily. The finderscope mounts conveniently to the side of the C90's OTA and it removes easily for storage and transport.

The entire system is tripod-adaptable - the C90 is equipped with a standard threaded tripod mount that's stable and secure. The rear of the C90 features built-in T-mount threads for mounting an SLR camera for astrophotography or digiscoping applications.

I bought this scope a few months ago as my first astronomy telescope and I'm slightly disappointed. It's great for planets and the moon at high power but views of anything other than that are dim and underwhelming. The long focal length and high F ratio mean that the field of view is very narrow, the magnification very high and the amount of light that reaches your eye is faint. The lowest possible magnification for this scope is about 40x which is frustratingly high. More magnification is definitely not better (for astronomy anyway). Objects are dim and float out of view very quickly at 40x. However, It is very solidly built, images of the moon or planets are crisp and clear and it performs well at higher magnifications. It would make a decent long-range spotting scope, though it is pretty heavy.

Comments about Celestron C90 MAK Spotting Scope:

I bought the Celestron C90 primarily for lunar imaging due to its longer focal length (1250mm). For the price, it's a great buy and should provide a lifetime of use. It comes with a simple yet adequate backpack for storing the scope and supplied accessories. I've coupled the C90 to a Manfrotto tripod and 502HD video head and it works great. Easy to setup, move and lock down. The day I took it, I captured a few shots of the moon and was very happy with the results. The seeing was unfavorable but the shots came out better than I expected. Don't expect great views of deep sky objects in typical suburban skies as it's a slow scope, but visually it's awesome on the moon and planets. The supplied diagonal and eyepiece work, but the views will be better with premium accessories. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one again if the need came up and I've always had a pleasant experience dealing with Celestron.

Comments about Celestron C90 MAK Spotting Scope:

I bought this scope for the range but will also use it for 'planet fun'. Haven't been to the range yet but live in the country. we all have 4 or more acres. My photo tripod was REALLY shakey so I bought a mike stand for $ and it seems solid now. Can see my neighbors screw heads in his metal building at 3 & 4 hundred yards away on a dull day and its steady. The Scope is very well built. I was worried because UPS had a hole in the side of the box you could put your hand in and the box that the scope was in from the factory was tore also. B&H had it packed really good and nothing was damaged but I was worried the jar might of knocked something loose inside the scope but it did not. GREAT job of packing by B&H. This is a great value and not my first purchase with B&H. They are TOPS in my book.

Comments about Celestron C90 MAK Spotting Scope:

Purchased for astronomy and long distance birding. The build quality of the optical tube feels excellent. It was heavier than I expected.

My Slik 330 EZ tripod head does not handle the weight very well; particularly when tipping up for a higher view. Interestingly, the head works much better in "vertical position" with the head tipped forward and the camera platform unlocked. The scope balances and stays where it is placed. It works well for now, but I would not recommend it as a long term solution.

The rubber eyeguards on both finder scope and eyepiece were slightly deformed, but usable. The eyepiece is mediocre with lots of internal reflection. The finder is adequate, but can be a bit challenging to use if it is not raised near eye level. Alignment of the finder was easy and there is ample room in the included backpack to store the scope with the find attached (though care must be taken not to grab the bag in a manner to not apply any torque to the plastic finder arm).

I purchased the C90 along with the Celestron 1.25 star diagonal. This makes it more suitable for astronomy than the included diagonal. The find scope becomes even more difficult to use for this purpose; particularly near zenith.

The scope is useful for long distance terrestrial observing. The maximum true field of view is approximately 1.3 degrees at 39x with the included eyepiece. This limits it's usefulness for shorter distances, but having the finder helps center on targets faster than panning around until the target appears in the eyepiece.

Comments about Celestron C90 MAK Spotting Scope:

I needed an inexpensive spotting scope for rifle practice. I tried both Celestron and Barska zoom spotting scopes and found both wanting.

Then I realized a 90mm MAK telescope with a 17mm eyepiece gives me a mag of around 75x, perfect for eyeballing targets at 100 yards. (I already had a still photo tripod.)

The set up, for my use, is fantastic. Clear, sharp, huge exit pupil, wide field of view. Tremendous.

Used it a variety of times, watching wildlife, with the 32mm plossl eyepiece that it came with and was shocked at how clear and crisp the image was. I've heard nothing but great reviews with the new C90 and took a chance at buying it and I would recommend it. I don't use for star gazing so I can't comment on that.

First off, you need a solid tripod. Very easy to assemble no tools required. Sharp images and great depth of field, I will be using this scope to take pictures of nature, people and space. All I need is an adapter for the focuser and the camcorder. It's a bit heavy, that would be my only complaint.

I have truly enjoyed this scope! I got great views of Jupiter, Saturn, the Orion Nebula and of course the moon. The finderscope was a little tricky but once I got it aligned it performed ok. I really don't have anything negative to say about this scope, it performs well for a small aperture scope. You will not be disappointed with this scope, as long you are familiar with the limitations of a 90mm aperture scope.

This is a terrific scope for either terrestrial or astronomy. A couple of considerations: 1) the finder scope it comes with is tough to use if you have glasses and has a pretty small field of view. Also, it doesn't come with dust caps? That said, it is simple to align with the main scope. 2) If you're using the scope for mainly astronomy I would invest in a 90 degree diagonal specifically for astronomy rather than the supplied 45 degree. 3) no matter what application you're using it for, put it on a good solid mount. For astronomy I have an orion skyview pro (cg-5) which is great for it. Absolutely rock solid vibration dampening. The scope weighs about 5 lbs so I would look for something with a load rating at least twice that. If you're doing terrestrial you'll need a very solid tripod there as well. Bottom line: The scope itself is a steal for what you pay. It feels heavy and serious in your hands and the quality of the optics is superb. The accessories it comes with will need some tweaking or replacing. A pleasant surprise was the 32 degree eyepiece it comes with. Again, I would have liked some dust caps! But it's still not bad for an included eyepiece. You can change eyepieces on it too. So if you already have a collection of 1.25's you can use them. Just bear in mind that the scope only gathers so much light and the focal length is pretty long so a short focal length eyepiece will give a pretty dark view. Other than that, get this scope before they stop making it!

Needed a lightweight, portable scope for use at my cabin to view wildlife and night sky. I have about 10 interchangeable eyepieces from my Mead telescope. I like the ability to change eyepieces.

I am using this scope with a CCD camera as a guide scope in a large telescope project. The focal length is excellent for a 1/3" CCD, and the image is uniform across the field. The size and convenient focus adjustment make this ideal for our application.

This scope is superb for low-light wildlife viewing and stars. Had one 30 years ago and gave it away. The newer version has better ocular and much better focusing. You will need a sturdier than average tripod to minimize vibrations.

Excellent spotting scope for general terrestrial observations. Brings the moon in nicely as well. Have tried digiscoping using a Nikon DSLR. Expect heavy vignetting if using a full frame camera. Reasonable results but rock solid tripod is a must. Super light weight and easy to transport with the included back pack. Really can't beat the price.
