I am an older adult (54) who decided late in life that he wanted to learn to play the keyboard. I had a cheaper keyboard, but wanted a full size hammer action model.
As a novice, I wanted a keyboard that would be with me for many years. I didn't want to go the piano route, which has to be tuned regularly, and has absolutely no portability. This keyboard is a beautiful piece of equipment that seems to be sturdily built, and has a nice sound.
I was dissaponinted with the weight of the unit. It is not portable unless you have a strong back. The touch sensitive keys were a positive selling point, but I was dissapointed with the amount of pressure it takes to control the variations in loudness. It really has to be banged on to get the volume, even though it has three differnt pressure settings, making it hard to control. The system wasnt quite as loud as I felt it should be, some of the voices are softer than others, making them harder to hear for old ears such as mine.
The computer interface, and usb port will be positve features in the future, but as of yet I have not used them. The teaching features are nice, but the screen is small, I would need a magnifing glass to see the notes it displays.
All in all, I am pleased I bought this unit. It was a much better choice for me than a conventional piano. I do get many hours of enjoyment from it as I practice.

We are out of the warrantee period and Yamaha has offered a 20% discount on a $169.00 display... The problem is I have to fix this very expensive Yamaha problem... Comments about Yamaha DGX-640 Portable Grand Piano Keyboard (Walnut):
As a beginning piano player, this unit really surprised me with the sound quality that comes from an electronic source. I would greatly recommend the survival kit that helps show you all of the features of the unit since it has so many things that it can do. Great response from a keyboard that imitates the feel of a real piano. The display even has some nice features that help you learn to play. The wait key helps slower players, like me, to have a background play right along with my beginning style.

Comments about Yamaha DGX-640 Portable Grand Piano Keyboard (Walnut):
The sounds are endless. Having had a PSR for more than 15 years, I was glad to see enough similarities that I could jump right in and play and use the DGX with confidence. Some of my favorite sounds from the PSR are still there, and now hundreds more to get into. The hammer action keys are delicious, and the external speakers are good enough for now that an extra amplifier can wait. Surprisingly, the headphone port(and headphone setting in the eq functions) make using an outside source unnecessary! My only wish is to be able to rename the User Banks, and User Songs, like I could in the PSR's. And my PSR-520 has 32 Banks with 4 spots vs. 8 with 4 in the DGX-640. I just hope this DGX lasts as long as my previous Yamaha keyboards because it may take that long to utilize all the sounds and variations within.

I bought this for my 6YO son who began piano lessons a few months ago. He'd been using a cheap, 4-octave keyboard [...]. His teacher recommended this particular model as an economical alternative to professional models. We love it. The keys play and feel like a piano, which was important. The sound is full and rich. He loves the voices, especially the electric guitar voices (there are several.) We have not explored the pre-programmed music (I'm sort of hoping the boy won't figure that out any time soon because it'll be a distraction), but we have used the metronome and record/playback feature. So far we have not been disappointed. The location of the USB port is great. I wish laptop manufactures would take note. I put a piece of tape over it when I'm not using it. Assembly was quick and easy, requiring only one phillips screwdriver. [...]

Got this to replace a Casio PX-330 I wasn't happy with (that's a great keyboard too, but the main Piano voice still a bit artificial, which was a showstopper for me). The key action is Yamaha's low end GHS keybed, which isn't great, but has good touch, and plays a little faster than a real piano, and I'm satisfied with it; I don't think it will breed any bad habits (and let's me "cheat" a little on really technical runs). I just wish the keys had a matte finish on them (aka "Ivory Touch"). Having the "skew wheel" is VERY handy for adding effects as well (something the Casio also lacked) - while not really designed for it, this would be a usable MIDI controller.
The only real drawback is the built in sound system lacks low-end "grunt"; it would definitely benefit from a subwoofer as when playing the lower registers (especially when using the "Church Organ" voice and trying to get your Tocatta and Fugue on...). Final nitpick: there are so many features on this thing it can get hard to navigate through all of them.
All things considered, a real bargain for the money; I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could for the (very minor) drawbacks, but a 5 is fair.

I purchased this keyboard for my daughter and we are both very pleased with the sound and real piano feel of the keys. She loves playing around with the different "voices" and the keyboard provides several excellent educational features. I only have two minor complaints: First, completely assembled with the wooden stand and optional pedals, it probably weighs more than 100 lbs - not very portable.
Second, the music stand extends past the back of the keyboard and I have to put something (shoes) behind the base to keep it from being pushed against the wall and breaking the stand.
