This was my first attempt at purchasing a mic that was more that what comes with your computer. Im not impressed. Its less than 6 months old and the cartoid pickup inside the cage has come loose and is bumping into the sides of the bracket it sits in and is making loud booming noises with just the slightest touch or movement to it while it is recording. I wasn't familiar with Phantom power before purchasing this mic, so unless you have a converter already your going to need to fork out more money in order to get it to work. The sound quality before it broke, was decent but honestly I bought a [$] dollar Samsung GO-MIC that sounds 10x better. The mic stand mount that came attatched to the mic completely broke in half when the mic stand fell over.....luckilly without the mic attatched to it. I guess you get what you pay for and if this is your first mic....I wouldn't recomend it. For a few dollars more there are plenty of plug and play mics that have far superior quality and durability. If you still insist on purchasing it..Purchasing the extended warranty is a must.Trust me your gonna probably need to use it.

Wow, I'm impressed by the sound quality for the price. Never expected to get something that good for under $. Packaging however was... bad. It was broken and is kind on the minimal side. Roughly, I understand that I was buying a mic not a package, but it left some marks on the mic that I was not so warm about. But nothing to change the sound.

Comments about MXL MCA SP1 Studio Condenser Microphone:

I've been into recording for the last 30 years or so and I've used everything from inexpensive dynamics to high end Neumann condensors. I purchased a pair of MCA SP1's based on a review I read on a web blog, which gave it high praise for such an inexpensive mic. I tested these mic's on several instruments including an acoustic guitar, electric guitar amp, acoustic bass, drums (as tom mic's). The mic's did a good job on each instrument and it didn't take me long to find good positions for each instrument. This mic does exhibit scooped frequencies in the mid range, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. For a mid-heavy acoustic, the SP1 naturally tames those frequencies, yielding a better overall sound than other mic's. Used as a pair of stereo drum overheads, I imagine the SP1's will fare well, picking up the lower end of the toms, the high end of the cymbals, but taming the mids of the snare drum. I doubt I'd be happy if the SP1's were my only mic's, but they will certainly see some use in my studio and I know which mic I'll be reaching for when dealing with mid-heavy sources. For the price, there's not much else on the market that can do what these mic's do, as well as they do it.

Comments about MXL MCA SP1 Studio Condenser Microphone:

I have little to no experience with audio equipment, and i just wanted a decent microphone to experiment with. At this price this mic fits that bill, perfectly. It is possibly the greatest mic at this price point and if you are starting out it would be a great choice for vocals, guitar, percussion etc. It records all these reasonable well. The stand adapter it comes with is kind of useless on it own so keep in mind that you might have to look for something to hold it.

Comments about MXL MCA SP1 Studio Condenser Microphone:

Starting off as a young producer I needed a cheap but also not a cheaply made microphone. I found that the MCA SP1 can offer quality without having to dig into your wallet to purchase.
I'm running two of these into my PreSonus AudioBox and the quality for me is great.
Only thing I wish came with it would've been a shock mount, but you can easily fix this by going to the MXL website and looking at the shockmounts there.
There are no real cons for me, I'm not too picky as of now, just starting off in recording what more could I ask.

Comments about MXL MCA SP1 Studio Condenser Microphone:

I purchased this microphone to use in a home recording studio to record myself for the purposes of practice and make audition tapes. So far it has accurately captured the sound my instrument (double bass, acoustic guitar). After reading a lot of reviews I chose this microphone because it seemed to represent a good value and would be an inexpensive microphone to invest it while I learned some recording basics and figured out my DAW. I don't have very much experience as an engineer, but I do have years of experience in the studio as a professional musician, so while I can not compare it to many other microphones, I can say I am pleased with the sound I am getting in my humble little studio, especially for the price. If you are like me, on a budget and not really sure where to start with condenser mics you can't go wrong with the MCA SP1. Good value.

Comments about MXL MCA SP1 Studio Condenser Microphone:

Well I didn't expect it to sound that great for only [$] but when I plugged it in I couldn't believe how good it sounded! Sure it was plugged into a $800 dollar daking mic preamp and using a mogami cable which the cable by itself cost more than the mic but WOW! I ABed it to my AT4050 mic (a $500 dollar mic). The MCA SP1 did not have quite as much top end and has a bit of a peak around 250hz which needs fixing with EQ later but for [$], I can't believe how similar it sounds to high end mics. If you know how to EQ and mix and are on a budget or just need more mics. This is great. Is is a small diaphram condenser even though it is in a large condenser case so it will work better for instruments like guitars, toms on drums and any source where you want a warm sound. You can get many better mics for vocals but for most other things this is great. You won't believe how good it sounds for $45 bucks! I bought 8 of them.

Comments about MXL MCA SP1 Studio Condenser Microphone:

I put this mic up against a CAD M177 for a rough comparison. They both have a similar bump in the high end, which seems pretty common in budget condensers. The main difference I could see is that the CAD costs twice as much.Although it looks pretty rugged in photos, it does feel pretty light. A bonus for travel, but I wouldn't be too quick to bounce it around like it was an sm57/58.So while it's not the most transparent mic out there, it's hard to argue with a LDC for [$]. I'll probably buy a 2nd one and put them through the paces of the Glyn Johns' drum micing techinque.
