The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens improves upon its predecessor, one of the most acclaimed lenses in the Canon EF line, with superior performance, increased speed and optical quality.
This lens is constructed of 23 elements in 19 groups (including 1 Fluorite and 5 UD elements) which help deliver the sharpness and reduced aberration which professional photographers rely upon from Canon. The IS II Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to 4 stops of correction at all focal lengths.
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 3.9' (1.2 m) at all zoom settings so you can get the shot when shooting close to your subject even in smaller spaces. Like all Canon L-series lenses, this telephoto zoom is dust- and moisture-resistant and designed to keep on going even in the most challenging of environments.

What's not to say about this lens that you haven't already heard. Big, heavy, built like a tank, superb high quality and durability.
My 3rd L series lens-- I mount on a Canon 60D, and while it makes my camera look like a toy, this thing takes phenomenal photos and is unbelievably sharp at any range. Initially when I took it out of the box, I thought to myself "what did I just do." But, after I snapped a few test shots, that all went away.
Focus is the fastest out of 3 L lens I own, and is really quiet. I use a Black Rapid strap and makes the weight of the lens disappear. With the 60D, I find myself supporting the lens by the tripod mount rather than lifting up from the camera.
The lens case that it comes with is nice, even though you may just put it in your bag, it's a nice option to have. A steep price tag, but well worth it.
The f2.8 and the IS are well worth it to me, for low light and when I can't mount my flash. two IS modes is a nice option as well.
I still revert to the 24-105mm for an outing, only because I probably shouldn't be using the long range as much as I do, but I'm still getting myself used to this glass, and try to use it much as I can.
I'm a little hesitant to bring it out at times because of the attention it will attract, but I have a feeling that will end soon as I'm already getting used to the contrast.

I have been engaged in photography for more than 40 years with a statistical process improvement background. So I was more than interested to see if the 70-200 f-2.8 L II was significantly better than the L I. After 2 days of intensive testing my findings using both an EOS 1DS and 20D body are as follows. Contrast for the L II was slightly better. Resolution at 200mm was consistently 1 pair number lower [less good] at the center at f-2.8, 4.0, and 5.6 on the USAF 1951 resolution chart. Resolution through a series 1 Canon 2X multiplier was equal over the same aperture settings. The extreme edge resolution was seen to be slightly better from images of books on a shelf—"real world". Auto focus was significantly faster in bright light, which may be of benefit depending on what you photograph. Image stabilization is about 1 stop improved, but with the high ISO capabilities of current Canon cameras, a one stop increased setting would equalize this difference at the possible expense of increased noise. I chose not to test another sample, because even if a newer sample were to test one pair number higher [better] than the L I, [a possible manufacturing variation] the improvement would probably not be detectable by viewing a 300 PPI printed version at "normal viewing distance." For my purpose, primarily fine art photography, my results simply do not justify the price. So my advice is to test carefully before committing to an L II purchase; reality vs. your expectations may vary…

I've had numerous lenses like most people, and have to say this has been my go-to lens when I need to take a money shot. The first gen of this lens was awesome. Personally, I cant tell the difference between IS I and II, but I love having the most up to date gear.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:
Been using the lens for 3 weeks. Also bought the 70 - 300 L. They are for different use. The 2.8 is perfect for all kind of work requiring subject isolation and low light. Think it's a little bit sharper too - but not by much. Perhaps I am just justifying the higher price tag to my self by saying so. The 70-300L is also a fantastic lens. Much lighter and much more agile to carry around than the 2.8. But obviously requiring good light to stop action. Thought I would return one of the lenses but ended up keeping both. Both lenses have fantastic build quality - though the 2.8 really feel's more pro like, if that is what counts for you. I can recommend both lenses in a heartbeat. If low weight is important to you clearly choose the 70-300L. If low light, subject isolation and stopping action in low light are important to you choose the 2.8 or perhaps both lenses. Think they will keep their value relatively well, so consider a purchase a long term lease......

This lens is worth every penny and has already earned back part of what I spent on it in 2 short weeks. It is sharp, quick to autofocus, with amazing color and limited distortion/vignetting. If you want the best 70-200 this is the one and you should not hesitate to spend the money as this will be a hard lens to ever improve upon.

I'm a photo enthusiast. I shoot events and portraits with this lens on a 6D. I'm warning you now, this lens WILL ruin other lenses for you. The sharpness and clarity are simply mind blowing. It focuses nearly instantly and it's accurate...which is more than I can say for some other Canon lenses. Someone else wrote on here that if you're reading these reviews instead of buying one you're just wasting time that could be using to take pictures with it. Those words couldn't have been more true. This lens is a superstar.
Note: Battery grip is pretty much a necessity with this lens as it is pretty heavy.

Bought for my wife, she loves it!
She is a professional photographer who prefers prime lenses. However, for outdoor family photo sessions, she loves the flexibility and quality she has in this lens.
I have seen some quibbling about whether this is worth the purchase over the 1st generation lens from Canon. Sorry, the previous lens was a "kit" lens, so I can't help there.
Should be aware, this is a very functional lens, but it is heavier than most. But my wife says it is worth it!
We love this one though.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:
This is a "GREAT" lens. I have found it to be tack sharp at all settings, even those low light indoor wedding shots at 200mm f/2.8 are perfect. The focus was very fast and always on target. I love using collar on a tripod to quickly rotate from landscape to portrait without changing the perspective and composition. This is a must have lens for wedding photographers. But I find that it is my all around carry lens too. It's kind of heavy for shooting long periods of time, but the excellent images gained make it well worth the extra weight. The IS system is outstanding just make sure your on the correct mode for whatever type of shooting you will be doing. Mode 2 is perfect for those fast panning shots of fast moving subjects. Mode 1 is great for the rest. Thanks B&H for offering a excellent lens at a great price.
