Designed for pros and semi-pros alike, the Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit is a high-performance camera that features the resolving power of an 18-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 4 image processors that enable 8 frames-per-second capture of high-definition, low-noise imaging at sensitivity levels up to ISO 12800.

In addition to high-definition still images, the Canon EOS 7D can also capture true HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second. Video clips can be up to 12 minutes in length or 4GB in size, and you can make full use of all Canon EF and EF-S-mount lenses, which enables an exceptional range of creative visual possibilities. And to ensure clean, blemish-free image files, the 7D employs a dual dust-reduction system.

The EOS 7D's Intelligent Viewfinder enables 100% viewing of the total image area, and features a transparent LCD overlay option that enables advanced data display within the optical viewfinder including user-selected AF modes, a spot metering circle, and on-demand grid lines. In addition to the 7D's optical viewfinder a Live View mode enables you to compose, review, and edit images using the camera's 3", 920,000-dot TFT LCD. The 7D also features a Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that enables you to adjust the roll and pitch of the camera in 1° increments, using the viewfinder or LCD.

For continuous shooting sequences, the 7D can capture bursts of up to 126 JPEGs (large) when using UDMA CF memory cards, or 15 when shooting RAW files. An enhanced all cross-type 19-point autofocus system enables extremely accurate AI Servo AF subject tracking and user-selectable AF modes for precise focusing. For metering stills and video, the 7D features a new 63-zone iFCL metering system that takes focus and color data into consideration when establishing exposure times.

The Canon EOS 7D is constructed out of rugged magnesium-alloy and is sealed against dust and weather. The 7D's shutter is equally rugged and tested for up to 150,000 exposure cycles. Images can be recorded to Type I and II, UDMA-compliant CompactFlash cards in either sRGB or Adobe RGB, and you can expect up to 800 exposures per charge using the camera's rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

The included Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens is a lightweight, compact all-purpose "standard" zoom lens that has been designed specifically for digital photography. Ideal for travel, mid-range nature/wildlife and general photography, the lens is equivalent to a 29-216mm lens in 35mm format. It features Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology, which provides up to a 4-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds.

18.0 Megapixel CMOS Sensor and Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors
The EOS 7D features a Canon-designed 18.0 Megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor that captures such a high level of resolution it's easy to crop images for enlargement without concern of losing detail. A major factor in reducing noise, the CMOS sensor assures that images shot at highest sensitivity will be remarkably smooth. Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors ensure that images are captured, processed and saved with remarkable speed. The EOS 7D's ability to capture and process data of images shot at 18.0 Megapixels at 8 fps, as well as Face Detection Live Mode, Full HD video recording, Auto Lighting Optimizer and Lens Peripheral optimization are all possible thanks to the Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors.
ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 12800)
With a broad range of ISO settings, the EOS 7D enables shooting from dawn through dusk and ensures capture of the finest detail. With enhanced, low-noise high-sensitivity optimization, shooting in situations previously possible only with flash are easier than ever before.
Advanced Movie Mode with Manual Exposure Control and Selectable Frame Rates
The EOS 7D offers the enhanced image quality, smooth frame rates and adaptive exposure compensation necessary in a professional movie-making tool. By shooting video with a large sensor camera, it's simple to take advantage of the image characteristics intrinsic to SLR photography and not necessarily to video cameras.

In addition to a number of different recording size and frame rate modes, the EOS 7D enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features and even allows for in-camera editing. The large CMOS sensor and compatibility with over 60 lenses provide a wealth of depth-of-field options. And it's all as easy as the press of a button - the EOS 7D has a dedicated Live View/Movie Recording lever with a start/stop button that gets the shooting started fast.

Full HD Video is captured at 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) or 25p frames per second, for up to 4GB per clip. Movies are saved as .MOV files and can be viewed in Full HD with HDMI output. Other recording sizes include HD at 1280 x 720 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps) or SD/VGA at 640 x 480 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps).

Intelligent Viewfinder
The EOS 7D features a phenomenal redesigned viewfinder that not only offers 100 percent coverage, 1x magnification, a 29.4° angle of view and user-controlled dioptric adjustment; it also features a newly-designed transparent LCD display which enables a number of viewfinder displays to be overlaid at the touch of a button. Whereas with other cameras the representation of AF points and metering areas are static, with the EOS 7D, they can be displayed, adjusted and hidden, in camera, with ease. This means less distraction and more clarity to view the image in its entirety.

Display options include: grid, spot metering, AF points display, hide all, zone AF, spot (single-point) AF, AF point expansion and Dual Axis Electronic Level display. The EOS 7D also features a brilliant new Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots, displaying both roll and pitch in 1° increments, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD.

New 19-Point, All Cross-Type AF System
Canon packed its most advanced technologies into the EOS 7D's AF system. With 19 high precision, cross-type AF sensors, any of which can be selected automatically or manually, the EOS 7D is equipped to handle even the trickiest of focus situations with ease. The high-speed microcomputers in the EOS 7D use advanced algorithms that help ensure the fastest, most accurate AF performance under the widest variety of conditions.

In addition, Canon's Light Source detection AF automatically compensates the focus by taking into account artificial lighting sources and making appropriate adjustments and the EOS 7D's new Intelligent Macro focusing tracks the object or the cameras movement when shooting close-up, to ensure focus is never lost. AF modes can be customized to suit the situation, ensuring reliable focus, every time.

iFCL Metering with 63-Zone Dual-Layer Metering Sensor
The EOS 7D features a new, 63-zone dual-layer sensor designed to complement the 19-point AF system. By taking into account the color and luminosity surrounding chosen AF points, this new system delivers an entirely new level of accuracy for better results even in difficult lighting situations.

Since the metering sensor has a color measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimized; the EOS 7D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as in a theater or concert hall. This makes the EOS 7D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness such as brightly lit scenes or backlit scenes; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.

Rugged, Durable, Dust and Weather Resistant Construction
The EOS 7D is constructed of the highest quality materials, to exacting standards to ensure unfettered performance at all times. For example, the shutter can shoot at speeds up to 1/8000 sec for 150,000 cycles; the chassis is built of lightweight and rigid magnesium, and the camera's seals are built to resist water and dust.
Included Lens
The included Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens is a lightweight, compact zoom lens with a 35mm format equivalent of 29-216mm. It features Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology, which provides up to a 4-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds.

I am a professional videographer who has been using the Panasonic DVX/ HVX for several years. I waited a long time to purchase a new camera that is keeping up with the times and I finally went with the Canon 7D because of price and performance. I have been very happy with the cameras capabilities, dynamic quality and overall performance. I first used the camera on a vacation and thought it was funny how often I saw other tourists with this camera around their necks. Then when I returned to the world, I have used it for photo shoots as well as short films and even a friends wedding. I also keep seeing other small groups of filmmakers around town filming with this camera, including lame TMZ paparazzi types in Los Angeles. From tourists, to filmmakers, to evil paps, this camera is EVERYWHERE; for good reason too.

While it took me getting used to handling a DSLR camera for shooting video, I have gotten a pretty good feel for it with lots of practice and have been challenged with learning alot more about photography and cinematography because of it. I enjoy the wide 18mm lens and the 135mm offers a nice depth of field. My next purchase will ultimately be a 2.8 mid-range lens. I already had a nice Canon 2.8/ 70-200mm lens which performs great with the 7D. The 60fps is a thing of beauty and along with the steep price difference, this also made me choose the 7D over the 5D. Hands down, the 7D wins for the value ratio of cost/ performance. I also say that for shooting video, having the wider 18-135mm lens is worth the little extra money for a great everyday use lens. The 28-135 lens was okay, but that extra touch of wide made it feel more familiar to my work with using pro-video cameras like the DVX/ HVX. While I have external mics to use, I am also very impressed with the on-board mic. But beware that it will pick up camera operation noises, such as focus/ zooming/ adjusting the dials.

The only real negative issue I am experiencing is not with the camera, but is with editing on my modest computer that I have been using without issues for my previous video footage for nearly 4 years. My 2007 Macbook and Final Cut Pro 6 isn't up to speed with what this camera's hi-def video can do. While I saved alot of money on a great camera that I will continue to use for photography and indie filmmaking, I will need to get a new Mac Pro computer and Final Cut Pro 7. This is where it gets expensive, but in order to have a proper work flow with all the bells and whistles to handle the massive hi quality video, you'll need this to get the best result for the cameras capabilities on a Mac. The hardware & software upgrade is needed for the changing times and codecs and video cards, etc. to handle the hi-def information. That's just part of evolution I suppose. I'm happy about the cost of the 7D, but being a slave to Mac prices and constant upgrades can bite me.

Overall, I'm blown away by this camera. But do remember, it is a photography camera first and a video camera second. Hard swish panning and hard rack zooms do cause a bit of video disturbance if you're rough with handling it. I did use it on my old Glidecam and a Jib arm crane with great results. Beware of the accessories you'll want to get the moment you start playing with it from shoulder mounts and a very necessary eye loop for the LCD screen. I also found a 2nd battery to be absolutely needed and at least a Lexar 16GB CF card for shooting alot of video. Instead of buying more expensive CF cards, i bought a portable LaCie Rugged 500Gb hard drive to dump footage on with a USB Lexar card reader which takes about 18 mins to transfer 16Gb of video footage. The 16Gb amounts to about 50mins of hi-def video footage. Hope that was useful! Cheers and happy shooting.

Purchased this camera a week ago for a nonprofit interview series---had five shoots in five days, lasting around 3 to 4 hours each. After about two hours of continuous use, the camera began to flash a red thermometer and even automatically closed the aperture all the way down for no apparent reason. At the end of one longer shoot day, the camera also produced 4 corrupt files that I could not open on my computer, presumably related to the overheating problem.

These problems, in conjunction with the fact that you can only record 4gb/12 minute video files at a time, make this a less than optimal video machine. I have the camera outfitted with a hoodloope, a zoom h4n for audio recording, and some various clamps and holders for stabilization. The image quality is fantastic, and the fact that I can so easily switch between SLR still shooting and HD video shooting is exceptionally convenient. I used this to shoot portraits of my interviewees as well as interviews, and both sets of images look great in decent lighting conditions. The overheating generally took sustained use over several hours, and can be managed by powering down for a few minutes.

Even so, anyone considering this camera for serious video use should be aware of the difficulties and quirks yet to be fully worked out. It shoots in h.264, which is not a good codec for FCP or Adobe Premiere, demanding ANOTHER post production step of transcoding.

I think the camera is worth it---I find the shallow depth of field produced by the Canon lenses extremely attractive. But know that making this work for video production takes a lot of extra effort.

I am amazed by my new Canon EOS 7D camera. It was purchased to replace my old Canon, and I feel I have purchased a Mercedes for the price of a Buick. It's use is intuitive and well thought out. It will be used for land but primarily as an underwater camera for diving. There are many features I look forward to using, especially the ability to shoot pictures in RAW form, then copy and edit them with different effects. I encourage you to do your research and am confidant you will want to take a serious look at this excellent product.

I primarily use the product to take photos of lacrosse games.

The clarity of the motion shots are really good.

As a relative beginner - the controls can be a bit daunting but after a little play and research I found a few set ups that work very well.

The weight is a bit heavier than the Rebel I was using before but I do like the solid feel in my hands.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit:

After recommending this camera to a friend who was looking to shoot a short film, I decided to buy one for myself.

I was looking for an HD camera with interchangeable lenses to shoot video with. I did not want to pay the high price for full frame lenses - so the 5D was out and as much as I like the BlackMagic Cinema Camera I could not afford all the goodies to go with it for post production.

The Canon EOS 7D is a perfect entry into DSLR filmmaking. I am planning on downloading the Technicolor Cinema style so that it boosts the contrast for color grading in post.

I have only played with this camera for a few days but I am in love with the ease of use and the smooth video. The lens is great! The focus ring is in the right spot to use a follow focus. I highly recommend a 50mm lens to go with the stock lens that comes with it for filmmaking as the nifty fifty is what I use 60-70% of the time.

I have used the 60D for 2 years and this was my upgrade for daily beach photography. I love it! I've shot two weddings with it as well. Zero complaints! Favorite aspect is how much easier it is to switch from video to photo and back.

Great camera for my uses - mostly sports. Been shooting with Canon SLRs & DSLRs forever and this is a nice addition to the collection. My only minor quibble is that the 18-135 lens included with this package deal is the OLD version of the lens, not the updated "STM". I have both, picture quality is negligible, but the STM has a couple of nice features. Read online re: the difference, may or may not be important to you. I should have read the fine print! Overall very pleased.

This is my first DSLR and I am novice user. I don't have any idea of how to take good photographs and but always had inclination towards photography and nice camera. After too much of research I found this as ideal for me.
I used this camera and lens for my San Diego trip and I can't tell how expressive photographs were. It took some time to understand the basic functionality but the photographs were excellent. Image stabilization of the lens is absouletely flawless.
                          I would definitely recommend this.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit:

Bought to begin shooting video for both a hobby and for some cash for a physical trainer friend of mine. Everything looks great, and I'm having a lot of fun learning about lenses and accessories. I'm really new to all of this, so it's this mysterious (and expensive!) world that I'm getting in to. I almost bought a 5D Mark II at someone's suggestion, but honestly I think this is perfect for me. I don't know if I'd be able to tell the difference between the two, really. The only issue is that it's complicated and I have no clue what I'm doing! But that's my fault. Every time I figure out a new function or solve a problem it's like a puzzle and I'm having a good time with it.
