The Vitec Multimedia FS-H200 Pro is a portable direct-to-edit recorder that captures SD and HD video to Compact Flash cards. The recorder supports both DV and native HDV acquisition in a variety of resolutions and has the ability to record over 2.5 hours of footage to a 32GB card. By simply swapping in a fresh card when one is full, users can shoot the whole day without having to offload. Just shoot, connect, and edit--no more tape to log and capture, your clips are ready when you are!

The FS-H200 Pro provides a number of upgrades over the FS-H200, including clip thumbnail viewing, proxy content playback, MPEG4 proxy clips, FTP support and wired/wireless custom metadata logging, DV/HDV MXF support, user-definable 10-second retro cache, and lower power consumption.

Solid State Acquisition to Editing in One Step
By recording to solid state Compact Flash cards, the Focus FS-H200 Pro can be used in extreme conditions, including high-shock and high-altitude environments. Once a recording is completed, the Compact Flash card can be removed from the unit and inserted into a memory card adapter for quick computer access or remain in the FS-H200 Pro and mount to computer via USB. DTE Technology ensures that your footage is ready to edit instantly--no capturing, file transfer, or file conversion is required.
View Thumbnails and Video Clips
With the FS-H200 Pro, you can view thumbnails and video clips on its brilliant color display. Thumbnails can also be viewed on a web page when the FS-H200 Pro is connected to a network. MPEG-4 proxy files can be generated and transferred to a host computer or a video-sharing web site, as well as distributed to portable media devices, making collaboration easy.
Assign Custom Metadata on the Fly
With the FS-H200 Pro, you can personalize and optimize workflow--while you shoot. With your wireless handheld device or laptop, you can access the FS-H200 Pro through a browser, define metadata, and assign it to video while you are recording--eliminating the need to tag footage when the shoot is over. During postproduction, simply transfer clips--complete with metadata--from the FS-H200 Pro to your NLE system or PX Media Server. All of the information that you assigned during the shoot goes with the clips, saving you hours or even days of logging time.
Engineered for Portability, Durability, and Ease of Use
Only 2.75" wide, 5.4" high, and 1.25" deep (7 x 13.7 x 2.3 cm), the FS-H200 Pro packs a wealth of functionality into a sleek and durable package that weighs only 12 ounces. Crafted from the inside out to meet the reliability and quality standards that video professionals demand, the FS-H200 Pro is designed to deliver great results under even the most challenging shooting conditions.
Industry Standard File Format Support
The Focus FS-H200 Pro brings the most popular DTE file formats to solid state recording. When used with 25Mb/s HDV cameras. The FS-H200 Pro supports QuickTime 1080/60i and 720/30p recording for Final Cut Pro use, MXF HDV support for Avid, and M2T 720p/1080i recording for use in a number of different applications from Adobe, Avid and Grass Valley (Canopus).
Removable Compact Flash Slot
The FS-H200 Pro features a CF card slot on its side for insertion of standard Type 1, UDMA, 266x minimum Compact Flash Cards (16GB min.). Compact Flash cards feature a fast interface and very high capacities (currently up to 64GB) at low cost. The FS-H200 also features a captive protective cover for the CF card slot to protect and secure your media. Buy as many CF cards as required (Focus qualified CF cards).
Transform Workflow at the Recording Stage
Not only does the FS-H200 Pro enable you to go straight from shooting to editing by recording video in the NLE-compatible file format of your choice, but it allows you to add custom metadata to footage while you're recording. With three simple steps, you can define metadata fields for your shoot, add metadata tags to footage while it's recording, and transfer edit-ready clips to your NLE system or PX Media Server, complete with camera generated and custom-defined metadata. This simple three-step process dramatically streamlines workflow and saves numerous hours typically spent reviewing, logging, and tagging footage after it is shot.
Native QuickTime HDV & MXF Support
With the FS-H200 Pro, you can record 1080/60i or 720/30p clips as native QuickTime HDV. The FS-H200 Pro extracts and decodes the audio from the incoming HDV stream, combines it with video stream, and wraps is as a QuickTime HDV file. When recording is complete, your QuickTime HDV file can be imported directly into Final Cut Pro--no capture or conversion is required.
Transform Workflow with Industry Standard Removable Media
The FS-H200 Pro allows you to go straight from shooting to editing by recording video in the NLE-compatible file format of your choice. Enhancing workflow one step further, once a recording is complete, the FS-H200 Pro allows you to remove the Compact Flash card and mount it to your computer using a standard CF compatible memory card reader. By doing this, you are free to insert another CF card into your FS-H200 Pro and continue shooting while your previous card is being used for editing or archive ingest. If a CF compatible memory card reader is not available, simply leave the CF card in the FS-H200 Pro and mount the unit to a computer via USB2.0 using the available HDD mode.

I wanted to put the FS-H200 Pro DTE Recorder through its paces for several weeks in order to submit a hopefully more useful review. The recorder was intended to ensure continued service of my Canon XL-1, XL-2, and XL-H1a camcorders. The build quality is high, and the recorder is rugged enough for working in the field. Two clearly written manuals (User Guide and Pro Addendum Manual) provide detailed step-by-step instructions for the unit's rich set of capabilities and features that are relatively easy to access via a menu-driven system. The manufacturer is also completely up front regarding the unit's capabilities and limitations, particularly concerning the need to download their application that fixes a wrapper issue so that HDV clips captured in QuickTime format can be imported into Final Cut Pro. Vitec's technical support has thus far proven to be superb.

Before committing the unit to a shoot, I spent about 20 minutes getting accustomed to the "soft" buttons on the scroll wheel because these conductive controls can be a bit finicky -- either too responsive or not responsive enough -- without the right "finger magic". An addendum sheet to the user manual gives some helpful advice on handling the controls. After that, I found navigation through the menus to be straightforward although somewhat cumbersome in fast-changing shooting situations; however, virtually all configurations should be set beforehand so this isn't a significant constraint.

The only complaint I have about the FS-H200 concerns the way the battery must be removed: the unit has to be given a couple of firm vertical shakes while holding a release button on the side of the unit. The user manual cautions that the battery is held in place with very critical tolerances: they aren't kidding. If cradled to a camera, it's impossible to quickly eject the battery without removing the recorder from the bracket. With respect to camera mounting, I chose the Bracket 1 C2 On-Camera Wireless Receiver Mount and Firestore Cradle over the Vitec cradle because the latter mounts to the camera body handle and thus prevents access to playback controls on Canon XL-series camcorders.

Overall, my experience with the FS-H200 has been quite positive and the unit has performed admirably in field and studio settings. If you want to keep your investment in DV tape-based equipment useful for years to come, this DTE solution is an excellent value at a fair price. I intend to purchase another later this year to accommodate shooting with multiple camera setups.

I film long form events: plays, concerts, lectures. I purchased two of these units to extend the life of my Sony FX-1s. I did test each unit at home, then went to my first shoot--a 3 day event in Las Vegas.

One unit was fine...the other unit locked up totally, and NOTHING could be done. I was left to scrounge for DV tapes at the last second. And it's not easy to leave 2000 people at the Las Vegas Convention Center and quickly find 20 DV tapes, ASAP!

That unit was returned for an exchange (it was less than 2 weeks old!) and another unit arrived a few days later--but too late for Las Vegas.

In the intervening 10 months, I've only used the units sporadically--but enough to always be nervous around them. You could press record, have the REC indicator go on, and see the counter turning--great. Double check it 20 minutes later, and it had stopped recording....while plugged into AC power! Another time things recorded for the full 2.5 hours, but the image suddenly froze at about 55 minutes...and the remaining footage was a silent freeze frame for about 95 minutes. In both of these cases, the camera was a "lockdown" static camera--no jiggling of cables or equipment.

Last night I was prepping for Las Vegas again. I hooked up both cameras and units, basically aimed the cameras at my living room and had them record.

BOTH units failed. One unit simply will not record at all. System resets won't work..it turns on and off, etc., but NO recording functions at all. It's almost as if a memory card isn't in the unit.

The other unit started doing the same thing....after 3 "sessions" of about 50 minutes each, it refused to record. Anything.

System resets didn't work. Removing the battery didn't help. AC power didn't help. Battery power didn't help.

After letting the 2nd unit sit overnight, voila....it works this morning. Overheated? Well, it was in my living room, 74F, and about as gentle an operating environment as one could ever want.

So....TWO identical units fail almost simultaneously, and simply WILL NOT FUNCTION. This is disastrous in a professional situation, and utterly unacceptable. Nearly $2000 down the drain.

I'm totally disgusted with this product. I'm a pro filmmaker, and to have 3 out of 3 units fail shows that something is desperately wrong. I wasn't trying to do anything fancy at all...no wireless, proxies, metadata transfers, etc. Just RECORD and STOP. And if these units utterly fail at doing that.....that's pretty pathetic!

    Problems With Some Sony Cameras

Comments about VITEC FS-H200 Pro Portable Compact Flash DTE Recorder:

I purchased this unit to extend the life of a Sony HDR-FX1, which I still use for certain applications. I found the unit to have the same quirks as others have noted, like difficulty navigating settings using the touch wheel interface. The bigger problems for me occurred when recording to the M2T HDV file format. In each clip, the audio drops out for the last 8 frames of the clip. Also when starting and stopping the unit using the button on the camera (SYNCHRO Mode) the unit records errant clips of less than a second in between the intended clips. It appears to start recording for several frames, stop, then reset and start recording again. The result is that you get an 18-24 frame clip and then the regular clip. Because of the restart you may miss some time between the clips. Therefore, if you import all the clips as-is into your editor, you get glitches in both sound and picture that need to be cleaned up. After sending my unit in for service, Vitec confirmed these issues in regard to certain Sony cameras. They suggested recording in the MOV format instead. The MOV clips I've recorded could not be imported directly into Premiere Pro CS6 on the Windows platform. There may be some file conversion pre-processing necessary which I have not tried yet. Although the unit is able to record HD video, I can't recommend it because the problems I mentioned. It may work better with other cameras. I would also note that, like HDV cameras, these units are a bit antiquated. My "new" unit had a manufacturing date from 2012. The most recent firmware update if from 2011. Also I was told that newer faster CF cards may not be compatible with this unit and cause problems. The only cards certified to work with this unit are a few years old and are no longer made. You may have to find them used.

Comments about VITEC FS-H200 Pro Portable Compact Flash DTE Recorder:

The VITEC FS-H200 Pro Portable Compact Flash DTE Recorder was a great option for me. I invested in a Canon GL2 which is a great camera, but uses tape to capture. By switching to the DTE recorder, I am able to seamlessly record segmented captures into a single file, then drop-and-drag the file onto my PC for editing. A great time saver. Files are easy to edit and I've had no problems with this addition to my collection.

Lightweight and easy to use, this DTE rocks. Featuring many functions you won't get on many DTE recorders, this one can do the following...

-Edit Metadata on the fly with a plug-in WiFi dongle

-Swap cards quickly with eject utility to allow multi-card functionality

-Includes all needed cables and charging systems

-Will play back video on its own screen, or when plugged into the FireWire port of your compatible camera, through the viewfinder, flat-panel, and speaker of the camera itself in "VCR/Player" mode

      -Has synchro record capabilities

-Has little weight, but big functionality

Comments about VITEC FS-H200 Pro Portable Compact Flash DTE Recorder:

I've had a lot of time with FS-5s, and love their operation. FS-5s have quirky firmware and a hard drive that maybe doesn't live so long when going around on lots of video shoots.

Anyway, this recorder, the FS-H200, enjoys an almost identical user interface, so five stars right off the bat. One weird feature is that you have to hunt through the menus to mount this unit to your computer. Big deal, it took 5 minutes to figure out, so no stars deducted. (The FS-5 used the third of the four buttons on the front; just push it and the drive is mounted.)

With no moving parts, reliability should be improved, and as much as I want to hate on the manufacturer, I can't downgrade this unit for the FS-5's reliability problems. The lack of moving parts should increase reliability.

I've been through several gigs with this card and never dropped a frame. I'm guessing 30 hours of recording time was spent.

The typical Vitec problems exist: the dc converter should be marked "Vitec" so that you don't lose track of it. I mean for the price we spend for this thing, marking isn't an unreasonable request.
The customer support is not very good. Some German or French company bought the operation. Tech support is still in Silicon Valley, but back in the day they would apologize for problems and have you send the unit in for analysis. Nowadays they ask if you just want credit on a replacement unit.

The cf card allows about 2.5 hours of recording. If you buy a second cf card, you can record (drum roll) ANOTHER 2.5 hours of video. (!) (The battery will probably not last that long though.) Problem: I don't like removable cards because they represent one more thing to worry about. To be fair, I've come close to a 2.5 hr gig, but have never filled the card completely. I tried a 64GB card and it works. Use at your own risk though.

The "thumbwheel" is pressure sensitive. So when one tries to switch a selection from "A" to "B", it takes a LOT of practice... make the turning motion and it goes "ABABABABABABA", always landing on the original setting. Same thing if you just touch the bottom of the thumbwheel. It takes a few minutes to get used to.
I now have two FS-H200s, one has the "touchwheel", the other has the mechanical wheel from the FS-5. I prefer the latter, check to make sure which one you're getting, and which you prefer.

Only drawback: The batteries on all my FS-5/H200s are really difficult to swap out. Do not think you can quickly swap a battery during a gig. I always hook to AC.

Good quality product. However, for around the same price . . . you can get a Blackmagic Shuttle 2 and capture uncompressed HD video via BNC. This unit only offers video via Firewire. That's just a 25Mbps HDV signal. Personally, I went with Blackmagic's better quality option.

You have to buy the correct sandisk card, Extreme pro 90 mb/s 64 gig. Had the same specs on a 32 gig and it did not work With this card. With the 64 gig I tried every way to get it to fail. Works good. The menu wheel is very touchy. Overall from tape to card works well. Still run tape, do not trust both formats. Why do you think canons [$]camera has two card slots record at same time??

Comments about VITEC FS-H200 Pro Portable Compact Flash DTE Recorder:

Comments about VITEC FS-H200 Pro Portable Compact Flash DTE Recorder:

The correct settings on the Fs-H200 and your camcorder . I do have some problems with navigating the settings on the FS-H200 Pro but maybe I am just new to it. transferring data off the FS-H200 went smooth and with no problems. You will have to get use to the additional weight on your camcorder unless you attach it to a tripod
With a bracket made for the FS-H200 pro. However the unit works and I have no problems so far. Will be testing it out more later.
Yes I would recommend the FS-H200Pro.

Bought one to test. Will buy two more now. We video school dramas and musicals - 3 cameras plus a safety. This H200 Pro works PERFECTLY with my (2) Canon XH-A1s and (1) XH-A1S. Once you sit awhile and play with the menus and the manual you can set the unit and forget it. Last night I recorded 2-hrs,25 mins onto the Sandisc 32gig CF card with 10 mins to spare. Setting the unit to external control is flawless except for an approximate 2-second delay in beginning to record after the camera's record button is pushed. You just have to realize that lag time. The m2t file imports just fine into either of my NLE programs (Avid MC6 and Avid Liquid). Last night my other two cameras took 3 tapes each and there will probably be some dropped frames on those tapes as usual as opposed to no dropped frames with the H200 as far as I can tell so far. The unit is a bit large for mounting on the camera but is just fine afixed to the tripod. I'm sold!

The user interface is disgusting. Moving around menus is frustrating. It takes like 3 minutes plus to change a feature. The sensitivity of the wheel thing is wrong. Just exiting screens is painful. I'd go back to the original firestore 100. And if this unit wasn't a complete usability design FAIL...it's an ugly brick. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT FOR ANY REASON. Focusinfo refuses to fix or exchange. SAVE YOURSELF FRUSTRATION. DO NOT BUY. TRUST ME...buy an old firestore 100 from 10 years ago...

This is my first experience with this type of product. This a fantastic piece of technology. It was a bit daunting at first, but once I worked past the learning curve I realized what this could for my application. The support from Focus Enhancements was great, they replied to my questions promptly as I was learning to use the unit. The captured video is great. I've only scratched the surface of what this will do and I look forward to getting even deeper into its functioanl repertoire The flexibility in saving to the specific type of video format is wonderful. It is a pleasure to use first-rate equipment. If you have a need for this type of device, I highly recommend this.

Mostly shoot live sporting events. This unit failed right out of the box for me. Lost two live events thanks to FS-H200 Pro. Set it up and it worked. Got to event and it froze over and over. I about had a coronary. The only way it would work was to pop out battery at which time it would record as long as I didn't stop recording. Went back to the manual thinking I was doing something wrong and went out to another event. Even worse this time. Just got it back from manufacturer after they replaced the board. I have lost all confidence in unit though and wish I could have got my money back. I will never by anything from this company again.
