Watch TV directly on your computer with the EyeTV Hybrid from Elgato. The compact device plugs into a USB port on your computer and connects to your cable or antenna and lets you use your computer as a full featured television. The EyeTV 3 software provides a variety of DVR features, including video capture and fast-forwarding and pausing shows. The EyeTV Hybrid includes a remote control and a year's subscription to TV Guide program data.

Super-Small TV Tuner
The EyeTV Hybrid packs a lot of features into one very small TV stick. Whether you get your TV signal from cable or from an antenna, EyeTV Hybrid delivers a big TV picture live to your Mac or PC. To watch and record basic cable channels on your computer, simply connect EyeTV Hybrid to the coaxial cable coming straight from the wall; EyeTV Hybrid receives unscrambled digital and analog cable TV. EyeTV Hybrid also connects to your TV antenna to receive the huge variety of TV shows that are broadcast over-the-air for free. The quality of digital TV that is available with an antenna looks spectacular on your computer's high-resolution display, particularly the many shows that are broadcast in full HDTV.
Superb Quality
EyeTV Hybrid records digital TV in one quality setting, Lossless. The digital stream is recorded unaltered for full quality digital content as encoded by the broadcaster. EyeTV also supports closed captioning and Dolby Digital sound.
Capture Video
EyeTV Hybrid can capture video from analog sources such as a set-top box, a VCR, or a camcorder. Simply connect the video source to your computer using the included video cable for composite (RCA) or S-Video; then watch and even record the picture on your computer in standard definition. In the US, EyeTV 3 software offers additional support for set top boxes. EyeTV Hybrid processes analog video using the encoder built into the EyeTV software together with your Mac's processor. As a result, the quality of analog recordings depends on the power of your Mac.
Made for the Mac
With its clean lines, matte aluminum finish, and surprisingly small size, EyeTV Hybrid is the premier accessory for anyone who appreciates well-designed gadgets. It features a USB 2.0 interface for the streaming of superior quality, digital TV content and requires no external power supply.
EyeTV 3
The included EyeTV 3 software from Elgato turns your Mac into the coolest TV and DVR in the house. This award-winning software enables you to watch and record TV on your Mac, rewind, fast forward, and pause live TV, search a comprehensive Program Guide (includes one year of free TV Guide data, with optional renewal for only $19.95 per year), set up schedules to record your favorite TV programs, and edit out unwanted content. EyeTV 3 software offers special features for Mac users, including Smart Series Guides, Smart Playlists, automatic exports to iTunes, and support for the EyeTV for iPhone app.
Windows PC Compatibility
You can use EyeTV Hybrid with a Mac or PC. EyeTV Hybrid is compatible with Windows 7 and works great with Windows Media Center.

A Lot of Power for Such a Small Stick

Since broadcasters switched to clear digital, high definition video on multiple channels and subcarriers, it became impossible for my family to receive and record 16 x 9 HD television programs from all available channels on our VHS recorder. And, then we discovered just how expensive and complicated the new process can be if one wants to be flexible in a digital world.

Enter the Elegato EyeTV Hybrid. I researched this little wonder before deciding to purchase it. This IS NOT a stand alone product. For anyone wanting to use this system, please realize that you must have a computer (I use an iBook laptop next to the TV and transfer large files to another computer with a larger memory) to process the information from either a clear QAM cable or from over the air broadcasts. It CAN handle both digital and analog signals. And, it can receive clear and unencoded QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) signals. This unit WILL NOT receive or decode scrambled or encoded digital signals over cable systems. Please realize that big cable companies and the FCC are busy trying to encode all cable signals so that you need to rent a set top box even for basic service. However, if you decode the encrypted signal using a cable box, you can use EyeTV to record - something I haven't attempted because I get "basic" clear QAM cable service without encryption, .... so far. Despite this, I can still record every clear QAM channel, something that cable companies will not advertise or mention. You will have to retune channels ocassionally to receive any channels that have been changed or relocated by the cable company. Unfortunately, TV reception is not simple or cheap anymore. The days of three or four free channels is completely past us. And, cable companies know that internet TV service is beginning to take a huge bite out of their profits.

There are two parts to the EyeTV product - the tuner stick, which connects a video or antenna cable directly into a computer using a standard USB plug - and the computer program used to control the input from the stick. It is the program that is the key to the power of this unit. Although we didn't find it intuitive or simple at first, we are beginning to realize that this is a very powerful and well thought out set of tools. You can either set it up manually to record shows using a very simple "scheduler," or you can use information over the internet from TV Guide to set up recordings (the unit includes one free year of TV Guide service - but your computer must be connected to the internet to do so). Be aware that the scheduler is clearly marked, but only if you know where to find it and how to use it.

You can also use the EyeTV to transfer analog and taped programs to a digital format from a VHS or similar recording device. I have not yet done this, but a cable is included in the package to make this process fairly simple.

The instructions for the unit are supposed to be simple. However, EyeTV is not for the tech challenged among us. There is a great deal here that requires you to think about how the system is used with your computer and how it can be configured for cable or antenna. It is easy, but not simple.

All in all, I will not recommend this equipment for anyone who is not willing to think deeply about how television is changing and how much more complicated and expensive it has become since cable systems took over our viewing habits. However, if you are a thinking viewer who wants to transfer and record clear signals into a digital format, this device opens up a whole new world of choice in an otherwise expensive and choiceless cable world.

One final note: I recommend using the included USB cable extender and NOT connecting the stick directly to the computer. Reasons: heat buildup is deminished and there is less chance of breaking the USB connector. Also, you will need another device to feed your recording to a large format TV from the computer to HDMI format. I'll be researching this later.

Use this to pull in TV signals for distribution across and in-house digital signage system. Easy to use and the install was quick.

The only problem I have was there was no way to program channel selections. I've used ATI HDTV and the software allowed programming channels, turn on/off, throughout the day.

Comments about Elgato Systems EyeTV Hybrid:

Please listen to me. I don't want you to go through the mistake I made.THIS WILL ABSOLUTELY BREAK IN 3 MONTHS IF YOU DON'T DO WHAT I SAY.First off, this product works great and is at a great price, but the part that the cable screws into a total piece of ****. The slightest bends of the cable will internally break a metal piece on the inside that connects to the part the cable line screws into. You have to find a way to keep the cable line from being able to bend around this Hybrid Tuner. Keep the cable wire straight for 12 inches and then staple down or weigh down the wire at the 12 inch spot. This way when you move around the rest of the cable it won't move or effect the final 12 inches of the cable that connect to the Hybrid. IF you follow my advice you will LOVE this item. If you don't listen to me you are going to hit yourself wishing you had listened to me as you hold your broken Hybrid.

The EyeTV Hybrid is a great way to capture video and either watch it on your computer, or record it to your computer hard drive. I was very impressed with its very small size and light weight. It is about the size of my little finger! It is very easy to setup. . . the software that comes with it walks you thru each step, and there is nothing complex about setup. I was up and operating within 10 minutes. The quality of the video and sound is outstanding!dddd

I wanted a small 7" TV to put next to my 27" Mac computer to watch as I worked on line but there were none to be found at @ or any other electronic stores. After doing my homework I found the eye TV with overall good reviews and decided to try it. having had it for a week now I am very impressed with how fast it changes channels and am getting nearly 70 channels through my cable. it's so easy to go from a small image to a full 27" digital picture in a second.I am so pleased that I don't have to have another TV next to my computer taking up lots of space I don't have and am really enjoying not missing games as well as catching up on CNN and other news. It was easy to load the software and takes about 20 minutes to search all stations available from your cableI can't speak for anything but the Mac compatibility and highly recommend it.

              Ergo, the Eye TV.
I hooked it to the Mac and an antenna It cranked right up without a hitch. The video quality is as good as the TV. I hook the Mac to the big screen, sit back, & enjoy.
Now to get an extra Mac battery.

As many others have already addressed, this device will stop working within two months of use due to it's cheap design. The software will fail to recognize the device and you are left with a useless piece of plastic.

I contacted Elgato and went through their warranty department, only to be told that mine wouldn't be covered because I did not buy my product from an "authorized" reseller. Even though I purchased my product new in box (still sealed), they said they can't "guarantee the quality of the product" otherwise. Excuse me? Did you catch the fact that it was NEW IN BOX? Elgato is the company responsible for packing these devices, so if the quality wasn't there to begin with, it's nobody else's fault but Elgato's.

Most companies don't care where you purchased their products, they still stand behind them, but apparently Elgato sees it differently.

Do yourself a favor and instead of buying this piece of junk, do what I did and get yourself a Monsoon Vulkano Flow. It's much cheaper, works MUCH better with higher resolutions, offers you access to all of your channels AND recorded DVR content either locally or from anywhere in the world where you have a network connection, and most importantly they stand behind their products! Pretty soon Elgato will be out of business thanks to the Vulkano, and in my opinion, that can't happen soon enough.

The eyeTv hybrid works works just as I hoped. It is very flexible and capable. I. Had problems with the included software, but those were resolved with the newest version available online.

Great for watching unencrypted digital cable channels. These days it's just mostly the main broadcast networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, PBS, etc.) but for those who don't wish to pay for cable it's a great solution. Works with an antenna as well to receive over-the-air HDTV signals.

Use this to pull in TV signals for distribution across and in-house digital signage system. Easy to use and the install was quick.

The only problem I have was there was no way to program channel selections. I've used ATI HDTV and the software allowed programming channels, turn on/off, throughout the day.

This device works, but the image quality is impaired, depending upon signal strength. If the input is at all weak, the picture breaks up, sometimes badly. Even a costly, roof-mounted antenna will not deliver satisfactory signal strength for this tuner. Also, it runs extremely hot, which suggests that its lifetime is limited, since electronic device longevity is controlled to a major degree by overheating.
