Geotagging is fast becoming an integral part of the photographic landscape. Knowing where a photo was taken is as important as knowing who took it and when. For select Nikon and Fuji SLR cameras, this Geomet'r GNC-38 GPS Receiver tethers to the camera's 10-pin remote socket to actively tag images with latitude and longitude data that can be examined and referenced on the camera or computer. The SiRF III receiver is linked to the camera with a long coiled cable. When the shooting day is done, using the included software helps to organize images. The application is Mac OSX and Windows 2000, XP & Vista compatible, but is not necessary for operation if another image organizer is preferred.

Bought the GNC-38 for use on an Alaska trip. Downloaded and installed Nikon's GPS firmware for my 2 Nikon D200 bodies. The GPS worked for 3-4 days, then began having problems turning power on. Shortly thereafter, would not turn on at all.
Tried in both camera bodies. Email(twice) to Geomet'r with no response in several weeks.

This product lasted perhaps 6 months. I used it for one trip to Hawaii. Worked well until is broke. The software that is shipped with it is of very poor quality.

I bought this a couple months ago to pair with my Nikon D700. When I got the device, it worked fine. The time to track from a cold boot was acceptable, and positioning for the most point was accurate. However, this device a month ago stopped working. It wouldn't power on or anything. If it lasted over a year, I would be okay, but less than half a year, this is quite disappointing.

But now it is out of warranty, and I will be out another [$].Is it unreasonable to expect a few years of service out of this thing? I don't think so.It is not like I use this accessory every day!

It was easy to use and worked perfectly with my NIKON D300. I perched it just before I made a two-week trip to Turkey and Greece. We traveled extensively around the countries and it worked flawlessly. I was very glad I had it. I use Adobe Lightroom and when I had access to the Internet I was amazed to see the results. I didn't see any substantial effect on my camera battery. My concern of draining my camera battery turned out to be no problem. In fact I was glad that I didn't need to bother with the extra batteries. The reason I didn't give it a five star rating was that over the course of a days shooting, about 12 hrs, I would bump the on/off switch and need to turn it on again. Because the switch is near the lens removal button and for other reasons I accidentally turned it off about 20 times a day. What was a help to me was that I could see on my camera information display that it was on or off.

This is a great GPS. Forget any software that comes with it, you don't need it. Just plug this into your camera, go to the camera menu and enable GPS, and your camera will add coordinates into the exif information contained in each image. Programs like lightroom or websites like flickr will automatically map where the photo was taken. I've been using mine for about 2 years on a D300 and D3S.
