I was looking for a 1TB, Firewire, bus powered portable drive. I was attempting to keep the cost between $100-150. After looking at several products on the market, including USB bus-powered HDDs, I decided to bite the bullet on the G-RAID mini. [$]was a worthwhile investment. I shuttle my files to the G-RAID mini and keep my SSD with plenty of free space. My video editing friends suggested this model. I like the compact size of it, and the one cable plugged into my 13" MBP is very convenient! It's perfect for traveling. Although I would invest in Thunderbolt, I don't have thunderbolt, so FW800 is perfectly fine for my needs for now (backup & archiving). And FW800 doesn't seem to be disappering anytime soon...

Simple and straightforward; it sets up on the Mac without fuss. Its external appearance is first-class. However, ours had a drive failure within a few weeks of its installation. The only indication of this was a flashing red light behind the front grille. There is no manual, not even on the CD, and the manual for the nearest other model says nothing about error conditions. Tech support identified this as a failed drive, a fact which did not make itself at all apparent in any other way. There was no data loss, and G-Tech/Hitachi promptly issued an R.M.A. As for the cost of returning it and the lost time, well, that didn't even get us an apology from G-Tech.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID mini Portable Hard Drive Array:
I can't comment on others' issues with the drives failing, but I just bought my fourth over several years now with no issues. I format as RAID 1 for redundancy--these drives serve as my "tape" archive for the video I shoot. Just drop the card contents on, and you've got a pretty safe backup of what you shoot. My filled drives go in a safe deposit box.

The product is very quiet (which was important to me) and has a very small footprint. It is performing admirably. The only thing that kinda isn't great, it that it doesn't have a Apple Thunderbolt port. There is a version that has Thunderbolt, but you have to sacrifice firewire. I really think the product should have both.

Everything is perfect so far.The only thing is that this hard disk is a bit bulky than the G-Technology 1TB G-DRIVE mini - do own both of them. But I decided to buy this one because it has his on fan (ventilator), and for editing lots of hours straight I do prefer hard disks that have ventilator so it doesn't overheated.

I use this hard drive to edit on Final Cut with on the macs that are at my college. It is lightweight and works great, and I'm glad that it has a fan to keep it from overheating. The only drawback is that if I wanted to use it on my PC, I have to reformat it and lose all the information that is on it.

This product was useless. It works for the first couple of days then it dies on you. It has happened to many many people. I suggest you read real reviews before purchasing.

Having a small, dependable and proven RAID-capable drive like this from G-Tech is a big deal to me. I can power it off my laptop and use it to edit with on a plane.
I bought two and will be downloading critical HD video files to both, both set for RAID 1, so I basically have 3 backups of everything immediately, with 1TB capacity between the two. That's a lot of HD video files!
These G-RAIDs have proven themselves over time, and I know I can rely on them for this upcoming shoot. I wouldn't use anything else!

One year old (3yr warranty at least) g-raid mini will now not mount and has a solid red light. worked perfectly yesterday, about to back up the work i did yesterday on the road and nope.. toast.
I already have Lacie on my 'no fly' list which i guess now just got a little longer.
Disappointed as i thought this was a brand i could trust.
All that extra expenses of fan and cooling fins and it still lasts only a year. pathetic I'm afraid.
Ill be sending it in for warranty (if tech will let me send it from overseas, funny how we're allowed to fly round the world for work, be a global shooting professional but god forbid you should be allowed to buy a product in one country and get it repaired in another!)
Thats said about lacie i continue to be amazed at how well their simple rugged drives hold up on the road, ill be moving back to them asap and put this drive i paid so much more for, in the back drawer.
My vote.. buy something else.

Not long ago, I posted a review for this drive giving it a rating it did not deserve. The second drive is now having the same problems as the first.

I'm using this for editing videos for art school.
It's fast (factory set at RAID-0) but can also be re-set for RAID-1 (half the storage space, a lil slower, but more secure). It comes with multiple cables (E-Sata, new Firewire, old Firewire, USB) so it'll work with pretty much all computers. I trust its thick metal casing to protect the technology inside, and the little black leather holder can't hurt either. The provided CD-ROM also has info on cross-platform use (for non-Macs).
It's heavier and bigger than "portable" suggests, but not inconvenient, and probably par for the (1TB RAID) course. If you connect via USB, you have to use the DC cable to power it.

Fast drive, small, and portable. The first drive I received was loud. G-raid tech support said this was normal, but with in a week it was twice as loud as when I first hooked it up. I sent it back to BH for and ordered a new one. The new one is good. Hope it stays that way.

I really enjoyed using this to edit Prores files using the eSATA connection ... for a month. Yesterday it crashed FCP 2 times (didn't know it was the G-Raid at the time) and then today it refuses to mount. Wouldn't show up in Disk Warrior, nor with Disk Utility.
Check it out online, you'll find LOTS of people who've had the same problems with G-RAIDS. And here I thought the premium was worth it as I was getting an industry tested HDD.
If I could choose again this wouldn't be on my list of external HDDs

I bought two of these to dump HD video footage to from Panasonic P2 Cards. A week into shooting, one of the drives died. Very disappointing. Had to rush out and buy another drive to create a new backup from the backup.

I bought this RAID drive to use for an editorial session that needed to happen on location at a shoot. I was expecting a normal size drive, but I was pleasantly surprised that this drive is very compact. It's the same rugged metal housing as the larger drives, but just a smaller version which works out since when I'm mobile space it usually at a premium.
It worked wonderfully for this application and I will continue to use this drive on mobile gigs in the future. It's much faster than single drive non raid units and the speed was definitely appreciated both while editing and especially when Exporting. A colleague was using a single drive and I was able to cut his Export times in half because of the increase in speed.
I wouldn't use this as my only hard drive for editing, but for mobile use I give this two thumbs way up!

I edit on an AVID but travel between NY and Paris on two different systems. I've been lugging a huge Western Dig Studio for three years to carry media files back and forth. This little GTECH weighs nothing, slips into my camera bag, and gives me PLENTY of space to work with. I already have a 5TB version as permanent storage for the AVID in NY and it's great. The Mini is quiet as a whisper - fast (eSata.) Only hassle: it's really meant for MAC's and I'm PC - no trouble formatting it for Windows 7 but Windows NT didn't recognise it at first. Had to download software (on a friend's advice) to get it to work (for $29.00)Sadly the tech at Hitachi had no idea how to fix. Now it's just a dream and I can easily switch the drive between the two system - one running Windows 7 and the other NT. Except for that I'd DEFINITELY recommend this for anybody who travels and needs media storage.
