I relied far too long on the built-in burners that come with computers, even very expensive Mac Pro towers. They wear out WAY TOO FAST. Who'd have thought a [$] computer doesn't come with burners that can last more than a year or two? I even got 2 "superdrives" and they both kind of stink. And now, 2 years in, I can't get a reliable burn on either one. How many discs do I need to throw away just hoping one might come out functional?I toiled with the expense of this product, but after tons of previous failed disc burns (even to people who had paid me for a video service) I NEEDED peace of mind over everything else. This one did it. I got it for an independent video job, have had it only two weeks, and have burned off roughly 170 discs since then with ZERO issues.Rock solid whether burning data CD's, standard DVD's, or Blu-rays. Sending tons of performances or concerts to plenty of families all over my city; I NEED TO KNOW THE DISCS WORK. Time doesn't always allow for me to check and play start to finish; each and every disc! Can't do it. Too many problems in the past with bad burns. No complaints have reached my ears about the LaCie discs. Look how many reviews here talk about peace of mind. If you want it, get this burner.

My computer says its a "Pioneer BDR 205" bluray burner. Did a web search and in fact there is a Pioneer internal blu ray burner around, but it has been discontinued. Both do not share the exact same specifications (altough they look exactly the same)...but...really? Now it seems like this lacie unit its just a cheap internal bluray burner arranged to work as an overpriced external one. Would love to hear im wrong on this one
Still..great unit so far.

awesome product.. works great with my mac and the plug in for toast is awesome. I didn't notice any loss of quality from burning in Toast like I do when I make DVD's... The unit is a little bulky and thats the only negative thing about it.

This is the second LaCie BD-R burner I've purchased so I can have two stations burning discs. I burn DVDs, BD-Rs (video) and BD-ROMs for archiving. Very reliable, easy-to-use drive with various connectivity. Perfect for Mac, which is what I use them with. Comes with Toast Titanium, the standard in disc-burning software, which works really well on a Mac. No complaints. Solid, solid, solid.

Looks just like its predecessor d2 2X Lacie BD burner, and it works great right out of the box. Unfortunately even this model has been discontinued by Lacie, so buy this before they are all gone. Works with my Mac PowerBook G4 laptop (PowerPC chip, not Intel chip) even tho Lacie says it requires an Intel chip. The new d2 replacement model for this model now ONLY runs with Intel chip.

I ordered this burner because I'd read many good things about it. My on-board "SuperDrive" is very unreliable, so I invested in this one. I waited until I had used it for a bit before writing this review. Here's what I have found:
It is far ahead of the built-in burner in my MacBook Pro. It has been completely reliable for standard definition burning DVDs which I give to clients (wedding videos). However, for some reason, it doesn't seem to want to burn dual layer DVDs. At all. This isn't really a problem for me, beyond a wasted stack of dual layer DVDs I purchased. I did burn a few Blu-Ray disks (for back-up AVCHD files), but for some reason my NLE (Final Cut Express) and/or my Mac doesn't see the files on the finished (burned) disks. I'm far from a techie, so it may very well be my own shortcomings here. In any case, it's a very solid machine (weighs a ton). And, since it does the one thing I need to do, and does it very reliably, I give it a high rating and would recommend. I gave only 4/5 stars because of the issues with the dual-layer and Blu-Ray problems. If you are anywhere near a techie, you will likely get that to work, too!

Comments about LaCie d2 12x Blu-ray Disc Writer:
I picked up this burner because of its write speed and feedback I received from colleagues as well as online. I'm satisfied with the burner thus far (about 15 SD and 2 Blu-ray discs in). One thing I'd like to point out is an issue with the Roxio software. While it boasts superior features, it fails to deliver any ease in
its usuage. I struggled with the install and constant crashes for a day before I finally removed it entirely from my system. I learned how to use Adobe Encore in about half the time I spent struggling with Roxio. One thing worth noting, make sure your device fully installs and that you don't max out write speeds in .ncor. You'll more than likely receive a sense code error that your hardware isn't functioning properly. You may also need to run the program (Encore) as admin in Windows 7.

After many months of research I purchased this model. I use it to burn home movies in 1080p HD. So far it has been flawless. Not one bad disc burn. I used Verbatim white printable 6x HD discs and have gotten stunning results. I would definitely recommend this Burner. It's pricey but the end result is worth it to me.

I use this Bluray disc writer to burn blurays of my 129 min. feature documentary. There's not much to think to operate this product. Just Plug and play, and enjoy! My only complaint is with the power cord. It comes (came with) an amazing european / southamerican connector and I had to get an adapter. With the adapter everything was smooth.

Just plug and play.My olny complaint is with the power cord. I had to find an adapter. It has an amazing switchable european connector. With the adapter everything worked perfectly.

This LaCie Blu-ray burner has been great for backing up all of my video files onto a tangible storage medium. With all of the cloud computing and saving content to virtual spaces, it's great to know that I can physically access the footage on a blu-ray. I also like how rugged the LaCie shell is. I would highly recommend this product.

There are times that Lacie interesting and revolutionary product launches but this writer was on time. While offering for Mac users to record Blu-rays, still works with firewire port, old thing. Have not updated the line with tape recorders with USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt. A pity.
