The camera is held facing down in shooting position supported by padded, movable internal dividers. The pack is ostensibly worn on your back but can easily be swung to the front for rapid access as a sling pack. This is a fantastic all around bag for carrying your camera and essential gear while on day-trips at home or while traveling abroad. I was initially hesitant to buy it due to several negative views on the bag's comfort and accessibility. I can now safely say that I did not find this to be the case at all, and I am very happy that I went with it.

The bag comfortably fits a D300 with 18-200 lens attached, as well as two other fairly large lenses / accessories in the main compartment, with plenty of extra room for nick knacks in the front zippered pouch. The strap is extremely comfortable, the bag fits snugly to the body, and slings around easily to the front at any length adjustment. Getting to the camera is quick and easy.

My only minor complaint was that the zipper to the main compartment is one sided and opens on the side that that is facing towards the ground, thus there is a small danger of the camera falling out if you're not careful (while the bag is slung to the front). Aside from that, the design is brilliant.

Highly recommended, particularly for day-tripping and excursions.

I bought this pack as an alternative to a backpack for a trip to New York City. I almost bought the 7x model, but decided to go a little larger. After carrying the pack for 3 whole days on foot, in cabs, and on the subway, here is my review.

Contents of bag: one regular body DSLR with 10-70 lens, 2 memory card holders, 1 small P&S camera (which I mainly carried in my pants or coat pocket. Sometimes my iPod Touch. A small headlamp. Sometimes my Tilley hat and/or light gloves. Various brochures, a NYC map.

The pack is large enough for a DSLR with medium zoom and 1-2 extra lens. However, I found that arranging the padded dividers to make everything accessible was nearly impossible. One of the main reasons for this difficulty with that the hook/loop system is SO STRONG you have to remove all the contents to get to something under one of the dividers--otherwise you will probably end up pulling it all out anyway, and probably onto the pavement. I didn't even know there was more space in the very bottom of the pack until I started ripping out the dividers. There is no way to make a "flap" to get at stuff on the bottom, you just have to remove the dividers. Again, the hook/loop is so strong and "grabby" that it is difficult to tweak the dividers' positions.

The other big problem I have with this pack is the padding on the shoulder strap. I am 6' tall, 200 lbs (or so) with long arms. When I extended the strap to make the bag work like it is supposed to (swing from front to back) and have it at an easily accessible height in front of my body, the last bit of padding on the strap was not on top of my shoulder, but somewhere down my back. When I adjusted the strap so the padding was over my shoulder, the pack was a bit too high for easy access when in front, but that was my only option, so that's how I used it.

I got really tired of carrying this pack all day. I kept having to shift it around on my shoulder, and also noticed a sore spot on my ribs on the right side where the strap goes under the arm. Remember, I did not have this pack loaded up with all the gear suggested by Tamrac.

I like the concept of this pack, but I just don't like the pack. Changes I would make would be to extend the padding at least another 6" longer, and make it 1/2" to 1" wider where it goes over the shoulder. A better way to keep the loose end of the strap in place would also be nice.

I would also divide it differently, making a large compartment with top access and a separate bottom compartment with side or front access. I might even leave off any outer pocket as things just seem to get lost in there because you can't open it far enough to see inside without taking it off.

I have lots of Tamrac gear, so I know its quality. And I really do like the "sling" concept, especially for riding in public conveyances, as you can bring it forward to sit without having to remove it like you would a backpack, and it's good for quick access to gear. But in practical application, there are some serious design flaws in the Velocity bag line.

Comments about Velocity 8x Pro Sling Pack (Brown/Tan):

I can't understand I found this bag is already discontinued.
I tried many sling bags before but never satisfied. I wanted a sling bag to accommodate my 5D3 (gripped) or full-frame body with my 70-200mm f2.8L attached, 24-70mm f2.8L and another lens/flash.
At the beginning only found backpacks or messenger type, but not sling bags until I found this. I have to say I am very satisfied. Not only I can carry all these gear but also many cards, batteries, off-camera flash cord and filters.
The only problem is this can get heavy but it depends on you.
If you still can find one don't doubt and get it, probably will on discount.

Comments about Velocity 8x Pro Sling Pack (Gray/Burgundy):

I originally bought Velocity 8x but it was bit small to carry my Canon 7D with a battery grip along with (3) lenses (16-35mm, 24-70mm, and 70- 200 mm) and a flash (580 EX2). I ended up purchasing Velocity 10x . If you don't have the battery pack and multiple lenses it is a good sturdy carry pack. On 10x I still have a plenty of room after putting aforementioned gear. So, if you are looking to expand your current equipment, you might as well spent a little extra to get 10x.

Comments about Velocity 8x Pro Sling Pack (Brown/Tan):

Im really liking this bag and it is very durable. My only complaint is I have trouble fitting everything in the bag that it claims to be able to carry. It does fit everything that I purchased it for though. When I initially received it I put my 17-40mm and my 10-17mm on one side and just for the record it is very difficult to get the 17-40mm in and out of the bag. My flash on the other side and my 7d with 70-200mm equipped in the middle. This made for a very tight fit and if it is your intention to buy this for similar equipment you may want to rethink this purchase. All in all to carry my 7d with the 70-200, 17-40mm, and flash it seems to work well.

Comments about Velocity 8x Pro Sling Pack (Black):

Yes, it is a little bulky but I use it for a canon 7D+battery grip with a 70-200 2.8L IS (II) and a 24-70 2.8L. It fits with the 70-200mm lens attached, and has enough room for the other lens and a small flash (e.g. 273 EX II) in the main compartment. If you used the lower sections of the main compartment, you could fit in a couple of other small lenses (e.g. 50mm 1.4/1.8), but these would be difficult to access. I normally carry Canon 15-85mm attached to camera + Canon 40/50mm lens, sigma 10mm 2.8 (fisheye) and flash.
It's more confortable that shoulder bags but accessing internal pockets is not that easy.

Comments about Velocity 8x Pro Sling Pack (Black):

I have a LowePro ProRunner backpack that I use the majority of the time, but I started looking at the Tamrac Velocity series when I had a trip to Savannah, GA for St. Patricks Day coming up. I wanted something that was light and provided easy access to my camera and lenses. I knew I'd be doing a lot of walking and would want to pull my camera out often for pics in the historic district, but didn't want to walk around the city with my camera out the entire time. I first got the Velocity 7x... when I got it I had to fit my Nikon D5100, the 18-55mm kit lens, and the 55-300 zoom lens. I arranged the inside, stuffed my camera with two lenses in there and it was a pretty tight fit, but it was just a daypack for me and I wanted it to be as small as possible. I was getting ready to purchase the Nikon 10-24mm wide angle lens too, but I had not seen it and thought I still would have enough room for that lens too. Got the lens a week after purchasing the 7x and there was no way I could use the 7x... it was so tight it just wasn't functional so I returned it. The Velocity 8x was only an inch bigger in all directions, but I wanted to give it a shot because I really liked the design and function of the bag. The 8x arrived and what a huge difference an inch in all directions made! I really don't even notice a difference in exterior size of the 8x compared to the 7x, but the inside is so much bigger! This time I easily fit my Nikon D5100, 18-55mm kit lens, 55-300mm zoom lens, and 10-24mm wide angle with hood.... then I got the Nikon 35mm 1.8g prime lens and still easily fit all four lenses... along with the SB-400 flash, an extra battery, memory card, and some microfibers.

I took my trip to Savannah and carried the bag all day for the whole week. It was very comfortable and though it took me a little longer than the few seconds Tamrac claims its takes to access your camera and lenses, it was really quick for me to sling the bag around, pull out my camera, and get some shots. It was so much more functional than using my backpack (which stayed in my room the entire time I was there). I was wearing the Velocity 8x for 6+ hours at a time everyday I was on my trip and I felt it was very comfortable to have on my back. Every now and then I may have had to make a slight adjustment, but this bag was a pleasure to have and really exceeded my expectations. It served its function and I'm so glad I went with the 8x... can't wait to use it again. One of the first things I'd recommend doing is figuring out how you want to lay out the inside of the bag and take the time to pull out and adjust all the interior dividers to fit. This bag is a great design and functions great as a daypack where I have the need to quickly access my camera and lenses multiple times!

Comments about Velocity 8x Pro Sling Pack (Brown/Tan):

I already own this bag, which is why I purchased another as a gift for my son who has a new Nikon DSLR. The top opening Tamrac Velocity 8X Pro Sling provides easy access to my camera and extra lenses. Additionally, it provides very good padding that offers protection for expensive equipment. The velcro inserts allow for flexibility with the internal configuration so that I can make the bag 'fit' the size of my equipment. The top of the bag has a zippered compartment for extra batteries, compact flash card, etc.

Externally, there is an outer pocket that is deceivingly large allowing me room for small camera accessories and personal items. Plus I can hook my cell phone to the loop on the side of the bag. Regarding the strap, it has extra padding so it doesn't cut into my shoulder, and it moves easily from my side to my back to the front.

I used my bag on a month-long trip to Eastern Europe and found it to be comfortable. I looked at many bags before purchasing this one, because my previous bag didn't meet my needs. Again, these are the features that sold me: 1) lightweight as an empty bag, so that the overall weight of the equipment doesn't overpower me (I'm 5'2"); 2) easy access to equipment; 3) adequate space for my non-camera equipment...wallet, hairbrush, lipstick, etc; 4) general appearance...it doesn't look like a camera bag that tells thiefs 'grab me'! It is more like a small backpack; 5)good padding on the strap; 6) waterproof and very good protection.

When I got a new DSLR camera body and new lenses I needed a bag that was not only sturdy but flexable as well. This Tamrac bag surpassed my expectations and is a true joy to carry and use. With this bag I can comfortable carry all I need for an outdoor shoot or cover a lively indoor party.

I bought this bag for my husband who has a Cannon SLR and to large lens. Everything fits great and there is room for a flash when he gets one. My step daughter had the smaller version and it is held up well to hiking, site seeing, etc. Tamrac makes well built products.

Being smaller, this bag holds lenses and camera body snugly, which I like. The adjustable velcro tabs inside allow for long and short lenses to be stored according to their needs. The outside pocket is perfect for accessory equipment that I don't want rattling around inside the bag with camera and lenses. Nicely padded in all of the right places. I just wish I could switch the single across the body strap to go over my RIGHT shoulder, not just the LEFT!

This bag is very small, easily carried anywhere, compact, but yet it can hold my 5d2 with grip AND tripod quick release plate, with my canon 70-200mm f2.8L II IS attached, and 2 backup lenses (my 24-105 and my 17-40). Front compartment can hold my memory cards and other small accessories like lens caps and such. Side attachment points for up to 2 Tamrac M.A.S. pouches will allow you to carry up to 2 extra lenses if necessary, or other accessories like a flash (extra pouches sold separately).

I carry a Nikon D300 with 18-270, 10-20 and a 50mm f1.4. I also manage to keep a 600 Strobe with big foldable difuser. In the front pocket I can carry extra media cards, pen and notebook. In the top pocket inside the main compartment I carry extra batteries and more media cards. This is a comfortable bag and I have trapsed all over Europe and the SouthWest with it and never had a problem. The build quality is outstanding for the price. I have had it in the rain and the design kept my gear dry. I could highly recommend this case at this price point.

Comments about Velocity 8x Pro Sling Pack (Black):

I was looking for a day trip bag to carry my Canon 7D and 70-200mm lens. I was looking at the Velocity 7X Sling but decided on the 8X Sling just for a little extra room.

My biggest concern was I am only 4'10" tall so I did not want a bag that would be huge against my petite frame but yet it had to be be big enough to hold my 7D and 70-200 lens attached.

This sling worked out perfect for what I was looking for. It is perfect for running around for the day. Especially if all you need is your camera, attached lens, and extra batteries and flash (or extra lens). I would not recommend this bag if you want need something to haul a lot of equipment. If that is what you need this sling would be just a little to small for your needs.

Another bag I purchased for when I need to take more equipment is the Tamrac Expedition 4X backpack. It holds my 7D and 70-200 lens attached and a whole lot more (everything I need). And the size of the backpack is perfect for my small frame. It looks like a normal size pack on me. But, if you were 5'6 or 6' it would probably feel like a very nice mini-pack to you.

Both the Velocity 8x Sling Pack (if you don't try to overstuff it) and the Expedition 4X Backpack can both easily be used for a day hike.
