Bought this to lug around my D300s and various lenses; in particular my Sigma 70-200 2.8. I wanted a full-up backpack (not a sling) because I hike pretty far and a sling bag wouldn't be comfortable on long hauls. I also wanted side access (like a sling) for quick shots on the trail.

In particular, I wanted to be able to carry the 70-200 dismounted from the camera body as well as on the body. Some other packs I tried (Lowepro Fastpack 350) weren't big enough for that. The Evo8 is, as long as the tripod ring is removed from the lens. (The Nikon 70-200 is a bit longer, so I'm guessing it might not fit.) I also liked the fact that the bag has a rain cover and tripod holder (although you have to fuss with mounting a standard sized tripod (e.g. 190Pro3) or monopod (681b). The bag is well laid-out and sewn and has nice little features like a place to put the lens cap, which I'm always setting down and forgetting. The waist strap and chest strap aren't height-adjustable, but they fit me reasonably well (I'm 5'11".) I'm happy with the bag, but wish there were an external place to put a water bottle, and a place for storing largish flat items like manuals/grey cards. One little extra pocket in the laptop section would have fixed that.

This bag is nice. It provides for enough storage for my D5000 with a 200mm lens attached, an additional lens plus the flashlight and the accessories I want to carry (spare batteries, memory cards, etc .).
It also seems to protect my gear reasonably well from rough handling. Not too rough mind you, with a Battery grip attached, I do not believe in its protection anymore since it is too tight a fit for my taste.

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I'm an adventure travel enthusiast. Seeing a new country from a hiking trail, bicycle, kayak, or horseback beats seeing it from a fast moving bus any day. I bought this backpack to carry my new Olympus OMD E-M5, lenses, filters, tripod, and other accessories on my travels, both on the trail and on the plane. The bag is solidly built and comfortable to wear. Perhaps a little bit heavier than I'd hoped, but a price you pay for the ample protection of my photography gear. The upper compartment is large enough to hold essential trail necessities like a lunch, rain jacket, and small first aid kit. The only improvement I'd like to see is the addition of a webbed pocket or two for water bottles. I'm anxious to give this pack a workout on an upcoming trip to the canyon lands of southern Utah.

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I was looking for a backpack that I could take on a couple of extended trips. I needed a backpack that I could carry a 5D MkII, a couple of lenses, flash, & accessories. I also needed one that would work as a carry-on because I certainly don't want to surrender my equipment to airline personnel. My laptop fits fine, I will store it in the backpack for the plane ride. I also like the idea that you can convert the pack to a sling pack.

I haven't actually used the backpack yet, but my research on this showed a couple of minuses. First, the straps may not be as comfortable as other backpacks. Secondly, the tripod holder will only accomodate compact tripods. For that reason, I bought a couple of straps that will fit in loops at the bottom of the pack. I plan to strap my tripod underneath the pack.

Good solid, stable backpack. Only thing I would add to future backpacks is to have more padding on front part of backpack and different tripod support pocket. Good for traveling

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I carry a Rebel 3Ti camera kit with an additional 75-300mm lens, a second Panasonic camera and a Sony camcorder. Everything is well protected and the dividers are adjustable. I just wish the inside would be of a light color. I appreciate the multiple pouches to hold filters, memory cards, etc.. There is room to spare for accessories such as a charger and spare batteries. The compartment above the main photo compartment is spacious enough for a small water bottle or anything small that is not photo equipment related. I have an iPad with its case in the very deep padded pocket and I still could put a few magazines or books.

The versatility for carrying and accessing the bag is by far its main advantage. It may take you a while to use it to its full potential but, once you get the hang of it, you will enjoy it. The strap set up is very clever so that you can unclip one to use as a sling bag, the one strap not being used gets tucked in so that it's out of the way. One can also tuck in the waist strap. I find the chest strap a little bit high for me. Being able to swing the bag in front of you to access either of the two side compartments is very convenient. Just make sure that when you do, the side compartment not being accessed is closed! The ability to carry a compact tripod is welcome although it has to be a compact one.

This is a comfortable to carry as a backpack. You don't feel the weight. Actually it feels much lighter than when you simply lift it from the ground, which was a very nice surprise.

The bag seems well made with solid fabric and stitching. I particularly like the strong zipper pulls. I can't address the durability issue as I've had the bag for only two weeks. The rain cover is not attached so that you don't have to put a wet cover back into its compartment like with most bags, a nice feature.

So far I am a very happy buyer and I love the brown and tan color.

Teh versatility of this product is why I purchased it. The ability to be able to load and unload my camera in different ways is key for me. Many times while on travel to museums and castles I have to put the camera away quickly and then have a short window to take pictures minutes later. My old camera bag was small and it took minutes to get set up as I had to remove and then replace the lense.
There are s ton of pockets of different shapes and sizes that are very helpful. I also have room for an iPad and travel books. Not too big, not too small! Sturdy with great strong zippers.

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I got this backpack in the mail this morning, so I cannot comment on how durable it will be months from now.

I am exceptionally happy with my purchase. The 5788 seemed like the best fit for me. I'm a female photojournalist who hefts around a lot of equipment and for me, it was necessary that my backpack have a slot for a laptop, and ample room for my lenses and extras.

          I've managed to fit:
          15-inch MacBook Pro and charger
Sunpak Pro 423PX Tripod (on outside tripod mount)
          Two external hard-drives
          EF 35mm f/1.4L USM
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
          Extender EF 1.4X III
          Speedlite 580EX II
          Extra battery and charger
          ECZ-990 external microphone
          Card reader
          Filters
          Flap of memory cards
Two extra Nikon Li-ion battery packs

There's also plenty of space to move around my lenses if I chose to add my Nikon D3 with a lens attached. Though adding another lens besides the one attached would be stretching it.

I carry my EOS 5D Mark III with BlackRapid RS-Sport Extreme Sport Strap with the Bryce attached and the strap of the 5788 doesn't seem to get in the way.

While the backpack is heavy with all of the gear inside of it, it isn't anything unmanageable. The waist straps definitely help shift the weight around.

I'm a relatively strong 5'8" female. I would guess that with everything inside, the pack weighs around 30-35 pounds.

I would no doubt recommend this backpack to a friend. I searched long and hard for a backpack, without finding one that seemed 100% perfect, but this one seems pretty darn close.

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I purchased the 5788 Evolution backpack for my husband, and he was very pleased with its generous size and sturdy construction. The bag will easily hold two cameras with lenses attached; the accessory-specific pockets and compartments ensure that your equipment is securely protected. In addition, there is plenty of room for personal items. This would make a great carry-on - compartment partitions are removable. The brown and tan fabric looks more like a backpack than a camera bag. This is not a flimsy bag; it is semi-rigid and is thoroughly protective of anything you store in it.

I was looking for a bag that would carry all my gear but also be comfortable to wear and the strap would hide away when travelling. I found this is the perfect bag, it hold my camemera with large zoom lens and has places for four smaller lens and flash, still leaving room for my personal stuff in the top compartment. It is very comfortable to wear on either shoulder as a sling bag, or as a full back pack. It was very well designed and I could not be happier. Thank you Tamrac for making a great product.

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

High quality construction. Good access, really like the double side zippers. Very easy to swing the pack around and quickly get to my camera. The camera comes out nicely even with a 70-200mm f4 canon L lens attached(would likely fit the f2.8, if only I had one).
I have not used it as a sling yet and not sure that I will, but nice to have the option.
The largest MacBook Pro fits nicely in the laptop zippered sleeve.
Plenty of little pockets for lens caps, extra data cards, filters and other odds and ends.
Comfortable to carry, but I have not worn it for more than a few miles at a time yet. I do a lot of hiking, backpacking, fly fishing and skiing in Colorado so it will be put through the paces this summer.
I had a smaller waist pack previously which was a real pain when trying to access gear.
Overall, really happy with the purchase. Hope it holds up for many years.

I give it 4 stars because when I put lenses inside the bag, the camera itself even with a 50mm attached becomes very tight to get in. Definitely recommend this for those who are going out for photowalks with minimum amount of gear. Everything else is same as advertised. Very nice camera bag!!!

I will not use it to carry a computer

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I just used my Tamrac backpack for the first time. I loaded it up with my Canon 5D MkII,24-70mm, 70-200mm, 580EXII,and other assorted small items. Everything fit just right in their slots and the in the additional storage area on top. I was carrying a lot of weight, but managed quite nicely. The waist belt really helps balance the weight off the shoulders. I went downtown to shoot Holiday pictures and walked around quite a bit and my backpack was comfortable to carry the whole time. Happy with my Tamrac 5788 EV8. As usual, I was very satisfied with B&H service also.

I compared various choices and concluded that this bag was the best balance of size, organization and ease of use for my needs (D800 with two large lenses). There is also a space to keep your tablet computer. Good purchase.

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

It mainly carries a Nikon D5100 plus a couple of lenses. There's still plenty of space for more stuff. There's an upper compartment that I wish had an additional zipper pocket instead of the mesh thing it has inside.

Very comportable now that it's new. Wonder how the foam stuffing in straps will hold out after a few years. I love that the camera compartment opens on left should side. Most sling type bags open on the right shoulder but this bag opens on both sides plus front side access too.

It can be used as a sling bag or back pack.

The laptop compartment is very deep but not very wide. No issues with my 14" laptop, 15" will fit too but 17" may be too large.

Not enough protection for base; there's just two diamond shaped pads are not enough. Besides these pads the base material is the same as the shell.

I don't like the handle on the top of the bag. Looks and feels cheap. Floor model handles were all chewed up too.

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I got this pack to carry my D700 along with a 70-200 and my 15" laptop while I travel abroad. It's a perfect size as it's not too big or bulky to be awkward as a carry-on, yet it's still big enough to hold a laptop, camera with 70-200 attached plus a couple extra lenses. The pocket up top holds a few more accessories or snacks. Quick side access to camera and lenses. Sturdy build and well padded, stands upright when set on the ground. Has a few options with the strap set up but I prefer using it as a normal backpack. The straps are excessively long in this setup so either have to cut off or roll them and tie them up. Does have waist strap as well that can be tucked away but haven't had to use it to take weight off of shoulders. Tripod holder works good but sits kinda high. Comfortable pack to wear on a day hike. Great all around pack

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

Purchased this pack before heading off for a week and a half trek in europe. It held up very well and is versatle, also being able to get my camera out quickly and easily was a huge benefit. Its nice that the amount of straps give you different choices of how to carry it, only downside about that is you will have lots of extra straps hanging off regardless of how you choose to carry it. It is a tad heavy as well, but that also is a result of what you are carrying.

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

This pack meets all of my expectations and more. It is very comfortable, even when loaded with my DSLR and 3 lenses (you can fit your DSLR w/70-200 lens attached). The tripod carry system works like a charm, although it can be somewhat top heavy with a larger tripod. I really like how I can tuck away the straps when just travelling in a vehicle. I haven't used it as a sling yet... usually just slide off one strap while in backpack mode to access my camera. I removed the extra pad things on the straps as it prevented me from shortening the straps enough. For a larger person (man) it probably wouldn't be an issue. Also, when travelling on my Harley, it fits perfect on the passenger seat... just strap the waist belt around the bottom of the sissybar and through the rear rack and clip... then I used a bungee cord from the pack's carry handle and pulled down attaching to the rack--- no shifting and easy to take off and on!! And the top portion is so convenient for storing glasses case, cell phone, keys, sunblock, etc. with easy access. And because you can tuck all the unused straps away, there is no unnecessary flapping in the wind while on a ride... like this pack was made for a motorcycle!! For longer hikes when you must carry water, just attach a water bottle carrier (see accessories) to the waist belt.. I already had one from years ago and it just clips right on. I highly recommend this pack for it's comfort, convenience and multi-purpose travel characteristics. Oh, and it is well made, sturdy and has a nice quality feel to it!

Comments about Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I'm a serious amateur that travels a lot and decided to look for new backpacks when I was at B&H a couple of weeks ago. I'd never bought Tamrac before but after trying on a few bags, this one really showed itself to be a winner.I keep a large camera (F5 or D800), 80-200/2.8, 16/2.8 fisheye, 17-35/2.8, and 85/1.8 plus you can stick a second body in the top compartment, or a jacket and a lunch, or whatever you like.Compared to my prior bag I find this one to be much more comfortable. I wore it on the subway to Brooklyn from midtown NYC and we walked all around the area near the foot of the bridges and then across the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan and the bag remained comfortable - and I'm middle-aged and not in the best shape . :)Someone else posted that he wouldn't try the bag in a regional jet. You can. It fits lengthwise in the overhead bin of a Canadair CRJ-100/200 jet with a little room to spare.

This is a well designed and well built backpack. It is comfortable in the backpack position but I do have to say that the sling concept is still confusing the heck out of me. Somehow no matter which way I cross the slings it still wants to come around opposite the way I think it should. I guess this is a case of practice makes perfect because to me, it is not intuitive. Other than that I am looking forward to using it in the field.

This bag holds my 5D with 24-105,7D with 17-55,70-200 IS with hood,85mm,50mm,135mm and my 10-22.The 580 EX flash plus extra batteries, flash cards etc. It's heavy. The Evolution 9 which can easily hold more equipment, would need wheels for an average person to move around with it. This is enough bag for me. Doubt that I would carry around this much equipment on an average day.Generally walk with a mid range Telephoto,70-200 and the 85 1.4 while shooting concerts and music festivals.Great for air travel. No additional pouches or bags needed to transport all of my gear. I highly recommend this bag.
