First things first, Nothing is perfect so I wont claim this to be. Finding the right camera bag is tough and very personal, but I think this could work for alot of people. I was looking for a new secondary / "day bag" for times when I didn't want to bring all of my gear or when I am out with my family. I was using a Tamrac Velocity 8x and while I love the quick access and construction quality I did not like how heavy it was and that it did not have alot of space for personal items. Looking around I found this bag and decided to give it a try.

    Storage:
Despite what other reviewers have said it does hold all the gear I wanted it to. I currently have it holding a,
Canon 5D mark II with Battery Grip
    24-105 f/4L IS w/ hood
    70-200 f/4L IS w/ hood
    85 f/1.8 w/ hood
    & 430EX II.
it is arranged so that I can store the camera with any lens attached. There are other pockets for things like memory cards, batteries, filters, etc. that all seem fine though I don't really use them. The top compartment is a nice size and has netting and a pouch for personal items. I use this to store diapers, wipes, snacks, maps, keys and pretty much everything else one would need for a day out with a small child. This is a big plus because we no longer have to carry two bags and my wife doesn't need a purse.

    Size and Comfort:
The Evolution is about as big as a normal sized backpack. I don't find it too bulky to carry at all. I have not flown with it yet but have taken larger bags with me as carry-ons. Comfort wise is where this bag won me over. I use it as a backpack and although the padding isn't super thick on the straps it feels just right. Even with everything loaded into it I don't feel it getting too heavy. It doesn't put all the weight on one spot like a sling would.

    Access:
Access is where this bag falls a bit short but I'm willing to compromise due to it's comfort and storage options. You can get into the camera section from either side or from the front. As a backpack you take one arm out of the strap and bring it around to get the camera. This work very well and isn't any trouble but this only gets you access to the camera not the extra lenses and such. You are supposed to flip the bag to the other side for extra lenses or take off the pack and get them through the front. This is not as easy as the Velocity series where everything is right there. What I have found however is that since the flaps are velcro'd in place I can just undo the flap and grab what I need then redo the velcro. It's not ideal but it does work.

Verdict: Every bag has compromises and for my needs I like this model. I would recommend it to someone who has a small kit as their main bag but I think the best use is for a day-trip bag. The comfort and storage are great and it still will let me grab my camera and change lenses on the fly. I wish it had a M.A.S. attachment for my water bottle holder but I just wear it on my belt instead. If you are looking at this bag just take a minute and think about what features you need and what you can compromise on and you'll know if this will work for you.

I bought this bag as it was said to fit a DSLR with grip and a 15.4 computer. When I got home with it I was in love with the design, but upon trying to fit my camera a Canon 50D with grip in it, the bag wasn't tall enough... You could fit it with a 50mm lens but it still sticks out really bad offering zero for protection to the camera if you bump it.

I am really frustrated because if they would have simply made it a 1/2-1 inch taller it would work perfectly with a grip sized DSLR. So my thoughts are if you don't have a grip sized camera this bag is amazing and you should pick it up for sure, but if you do have a grip sized DSLR it's not going to work out so well....

Comments about 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Black):

I bought the 5788 Evolution backpack for a recent trip to New Zealand and it worked well for me. My gear included a D7100 with battery grip, speedlight, Sigma 50-150mm F/2.8 telephoto zoom, Nikkor 18-55 F/2.8 DX zoom, Micro Nikkor 40mm F/2.8 lens, battery chargers and spare batteries. I did not take a laptop on this trip but I wanted a pack that would accommodate one on future trips.

As another reviewer has noted, the 5788 is not deep enough from front to back for a DSLR with battery grip attached if the grip placed against the wearer's back. But if the camera body and grip are rotated 90 degrees such that the grip is facing the bottom of the pack, both the body and grip fit nicely, even with the 50-150mm attached.

When shooting with one of the shorter lenses, I placed the longer zoom in the top compartment. I had enough other gear in that compartment that the lens was held securely in place.

The only negative I found is that, when loaded with that much gear, the pack is not particularly comfortable when used in the sling configuration. On the other hand, I found it to be very comfortable when worn as a backpack, especially when I used the waist belt.

      Tough on the back

Comments about 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Black):

As billed this bag is well laid out and will allow you to carry a lot of gear. It is well constructed although I have had to repair a zipper. My main complaint about this bag is that when I load it with a day's worth of gear it does not distribute the weight very well. After hiking for a few hours my back and neck really feel the strain. I am currently looking for a similar product with an internal frame.

This bag holds a wide variety of gear with lots of different configurations and access points. The zippers are pretty stiff to start, but I guess it's better than their being loose and getting sloppy. My only real complaint is that this bag really isn't built for a tall guy like me. (I'm 6'5".) The chest strap is far too high and not adjustable and the waist strap is way above my hips. That being said: I really didn't want a bigger bag and this is pretty comfortable to carry without the chest and waist straps anyway.

Very sturdy, gives confidence to place the camera and lenses. Easy to pull out the camera with lens attached without dropping other lenses and flash. One thing I miss is to store more than one ND filter on side zip.

I bought this bag for travel with a laptop and photo gear. The rear compartment holds my 15" laptop snug, but it fits without much effort. I have also been able to pack the main compartment with a camera body attached to the 100-400 lens, and fit a second lens and flash unit. The three ways to access this compartment are very handy. Only thing missing would be removable dividers for the top compartment, to secure a second camera body. All in all, very happy with the bag.

Comments about 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

Expanding my photography business entails upgrading to more functional/rugged equipment for daily and travel use. The 5788 Evolution has not disappointed. It is very comfortable to wear - I'm a woman in my 50s and didn't want a heavy pack. Hiking with it fully loaded is not a problem. It's big enough for my Nikon, 5+ lenses, assorted accessories, a tripod, and a 15" laptop w/charger. Love the sling option and side accesses for times when I need to get to my camera quickly. It is heavily padded inside and out, and all compartments on the inside can be customized to fit various equipment without sacrificing protection. The best feature that I like is that it is expandable between the top and bottom compartments as well. The 600 denier PolyTek with ballistic nylon exterior is water/stain resistant, and it does come with a rain fly. The price seemed a bit steep at first, but compared to other similar products that I researched, it definitely came down to "you get what you pay for," plus it comes with a 5 year warranty. What other camera/laptop backpacks do?

Well-made, rugged, strong. Can pack a full frame camera, three lenses, and miscellaneous items. Great for longer trips when you need additional equipment. Only complaint, which isn't much of one, is that the straps are too long for a smaller person like myself.

My bag was left on my jeep tire on an expedition and was ran over, all that was damaged severely was the strap and my laptop, but my cameras and all other equipment was left undamaged! right now im only using my back up hand bag, but I will be buying another tamrac.

Comments about 5788 Evolution 8 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack (Black):

I recently purchased this after purchasing the Evo 9 and deciding it was too large. To be fair, the Evo 9 may be perfect if you're on assignment for National Geographic and have to carry a full complement of fast lenses, but I found it a bit overwhelming. Additionally, the Evo 8 fits comfortably in an overhead bin, I doubt a fully loaded Evo 9 would.

This was my first side-access bag to take hiking (the Mist Trail at Yosemite), and I must say that it is a wonderful feature. It easily held a D800 w/ 200 Micro-Nikkor ready for access in 4 seconds on one side, and another camera with wide-angle lens on the other. The shoulder straps are comfortable, and the choice of sternum and / or waist straps are a welcome addition. The only slight bummer about using it on the trail was that I felt all the extra padding required for the laptop compartment was waisted when hiking, although that feature is extraordinarily useful during air travel. Indeed, the various pockets on the sides are perfect for holding tickets, wallet, etc., better than any other pack I've used.

I've come to the conclusion that there are possibly perfect packs for transporting your gear while traveling, and there may be perfect packs for hiking, but they are not one and the same. I guess I'm going to have to order an Evo 6 and see if it's the ideal trail pack, or maybe just look for an insert to put into a Camelback for hiking (none of the Evo's have mesh pockets for water bottles). It's really not a problem, those of us who worry about such things are blessed.

This backpack is perfect for a light gear pack. It holds the 4 lenses I travel with as well as 2 backs. The side gear doors work very well.

I bought this backpack for a trip to Africa. The size was the most important point due to restrictions by the airline. This bag fits that to a tee. Lots of room and really easy to reach all the pockets and zippers. The construction of this bag is top of the line.

Just returned from 12 days in Alaska. Independent touring and a cruise. Purchased the Evol 8 for the trip. It performed exceptionally well and is very well constructed. The camera compartment held the D7000, an 18-140, 70-300, binoculars, a charger, sunglasses and cell charger. With room to spare. The top section was good for passports, camera "raincoat", meds, a book, lunches, and a stainless steel coffee mug. The computer compartment was used to hold my rain shell and pants. Fit great. and the two outside compartments were good for stuff like chap stick, bug and glasses wipes, etc.The bag fits easily under airplane and tour buss seats and stood up well, absorbing all of the bumping and kicking, never phasing the equipment. The biggest challenge was getting it to fit/ride comfortably. When loaded, it is substantially heavy, and I am 5'6, 150#. But with some patience and using the waist belt, I got it to fit well and ride comfortably even while hiking.I was very pleased with it's performance. It is a bit bulky and big for me as an everyday bag, but was perfect for the trip.

I have owned a evolution 9 for about a year and love it. I got this smaller model as a 2nd pack for my assistant. It works really well. I love the side access for quickly getting a camera out. I also love the various pouches and pockets for stashing batteries, cards, filters, etc. I have put my evolution 9 through some serious hikes, including a downpour in Olympia that would have soaked all my gear if not for the awesome included rain fly. All the zippers are still smooth and in good shape, which is what usually goes out first for me. (the evolution 8 is identical to the 9 except for being slightly smaller)

Wanted a bag to hold camera, laptop and general stuff for vacation. Loved it so much that it's become my daily bag. Very well made and comfortable to wear. My only issue is that the straps are extra long to be able too use as cross body bag, but if you're normally using as a backpack the extra length a pain to deal with, and really don't want to cut them yet, just in case.

Checked out this backpack for use in traveling/hiking. I have a Nikon D60 with a 28-300 lens, memory cards, batteries, personal items, and often travel with a 15" laptop. This pack had plenty of room for all these items, and the side access to get to the camera would have been a plus. However, I tried the pack on with my lpatop and camera/lens loaded and the straps were very uncomfortable. The inner side of the straps has a rough, leather like pad. I assume this is to prevent it slipping, but resulting in bad rubbing on the shoulders. The chest strap is at an ackwark location across the chest and not adjustable up and down. The waist strap seems to be intended for a wide range of girths. For my average frame this resulted in the buckle being far to the right after adjustment with a long length of excess strap. I would definitely recommend trying this backpack on with some weight in it to see how it fits you before making a permanent purchase. Fortunately, B&H has a good return policy.

This is one of the better working bags around for hikes as well as location work. Very easy to access everything, has plenty of room for a fairly large kit. Works to hold several lenses and a couple pro bodies...it is not too bulky and offers very good protection as Tamrac is known for. Other makers sacrifice some durability and protection in order to save a pound. Bag is very customizable and they have placed allot of velcro in the main compartment for arranging dividers. Craftsmanship and materials are excellent...zippers are smooth and safe. I despise sticky hard to use zippers that some companies use. I love that you can hide ALL external straps for a clean package and I fit it on my rolling luggage for airport transit. Brown is a great color too. Overall a great bag...I carry a ton of stuff in an under the plane seat backpack. As with any loaded bag it can get heavy, but the design and dimensions are fairly compact for such a large capacity bag. It is fairly comfortable, not the most I've used though. I do like the versatility of the strap configuration. If traveling internationally I pack the awesome Lowpro Shoulder Sport 18L, which I pack in my carryon and it completely folds flat for sightseeing when I don't need a huge kit. So IMO, this is a keeper!
