Product Highlights
  • For Digital SLRs w/ Nikon Mount
  • Full Frame or APS Size Sensor Cameras
  • Standard to Super Telephoto Zoom
  • OS (Optical Stabilizer) Minimizes Blur
  • Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM)
  • Compatible w/Sigma APO Teleconverters

This 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon from Sigma is a zoom lens for digital SLR cameras with a Nikon lens mount. The lens has a standard to ultra telephoto zoom range that is ideal for nature, wildlife, or sports photography. The range translates into an equivalent 75-750mm when used with digital SLR cameras with an APS size chip. The lens is also compatible with full frame cameras. You can even increase you telephoto range by using the Sigma APO teleconverters.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO apochromatic design, four elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range. A rear focus system ensures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

Note! If the camera body does not support the HSM motor, auto focus will not work.

Designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 75 to 750mm with most cameras.
Standard to ultra telephoto zoom range makes this the perfect to carry when you only have room for one lens.
The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting a moving subject such as motor sports.
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing with full time manual focus override.
Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations.
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.

I had gone into this purchase with my eyes wide open. This was not a F2.8 Nikon 600mm but neither was I paying the price for one. I had read every review known to man. People had questions about sharpness after 400mm and I knew that the glass needed light. Lots of light.

Knowing all that, my trial run down to Santee Lakes was eye opening. Take a look at the attached picture at full focal length, effectively 750,mm on my Nikon D7000.

I shot the snowy egret at 1/400th of a second F8 with an iso of 800. This is one of several great shots I got with my new lens. I am an aperture priority kind of guy but now know that shutter priority makes more sense with the
50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon by Sigma. Anything 250th or slower was sort of marginal.

The lens is plenty sharp. It is one heavy dude but worth it. I am doing a Tetons/Yellowstone run next month and look forward to not being outgunned for once. I bought the Sigma 1.4 teleconverter but might leave it in the bag, the manual focus and potential aberration perhaps making it moot and unnecessary at this point.

The odd direction of the focus and zoom ring will take some rerouting of my neural networking. I don't like the fact that the lens caps won't fit into the Sigma lens case that comes with the camera, at least with the tripod foot attached.

You have to get used to a five lb. beast swinging from the bottom of a sling while you are hiking.

Having said that, this lens is life changing to me as a photographer and my clients and friends have honestly been totally blown away by my recent output.

I shoot mostly nature and bird pics but also do some sporting events like college baseball. I admit the images are good but that's about all I can say after owning one for five months. Two months after I bought it the autofocus quit working. Covered by warranty but I had to pay $55 for shipping, got it back in a week. Just last week it quit working again becasue the mount that connect to the camera got damages. How they got damaged is beyond me as I have handled this 5 pound lens like a new born child. I shipped it back to Sigma for repairs but was told I had to pay $160 bucks! I payed it, but was not happy about it. You would think a lens this heavy would be a little more sturdier. Instead it's about as fragile as a potato chip. This is my first Sigma lens and will not buy another one if they don't make them any better than this.

Really gives the zoom needed to bring that far away item up close and personal.Rather heavy so will be a lot more to lug around. Wish there was some better way for more zoom without all the added weight.

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

after much agony about the 150-500 or this one, 50-500, I dug deep and pulled out a grand and a half for a camera lens. Arrived as scheduled and in good shape. I've taken pictures of soccer matches. I agree with those who find it big and heavy, I didn't expect the barrel to extend when zooming ( I have the sigma 70-200 2.8 and that doesn't extend), it doesn't so much hunt for the proper focus at 500mm, but tends to pick up the trees and houses behind the players so they are out of focus but I can read the house number on the home behind the soccer field. again, first weekend. I'm sure I can figure it out better. It does focus extremely well on obvious structures rather than a bunch of kids running after a small ball 100 meters away. I do like the ability to get to 50mm when the action comes to my sidelines. Not sure it's worth a thousand dollars.... I shoot a D600 and turn up ISO so the "slow lens" issues aren't a problem. Alternatively, a faster piece of glass is about 5x more money and I'm not going to spend to that level. I'm satisfied. I already had a sigma teleconverter (not used with this lens yet) so that kept me from looking serious at the new Tamron long zoom to 600mm.

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

This lens is heavy, but the range is exceptional. Aperture is decent and leads to good pics in relatively bright light conditions. Low light is as expected. Possible to autofocus but not perfect with my Nikon D7000. Compared to the price the quality is very good and I like the extra up to 500 compared to Nikon's Nikkor lens which goes up to 400.

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I had this lens since last Nov. 2013. I've put over 2000 shots through it. Right out of the box it performed quite well. Is it heavy oh yeah ,but it balances very well & that is what I look for in a lens. Is the Bigma a perfect lens by no means. The 50-500 with OS is very versatile to say the least. At 50mm it close focuses to less than 2 ft., at 500mm it focuses down to 6ft. The AF is very fast but it hunts in less than good light. I shoot in Manual mode so I select the speed & aperture I also set the ISO on auto. Of course I have to have descent light. My photo buddies use the Canon 500 F4. I paid $ for mine they paid 10grand for theirs. If there was a tip for anyone who is thinking about the Sigma 50-500 with OS. Buy the Cotton carrier for this monster lens you'll be glad you did. I just slip it in & slip out it works great. I would definitely recommend this lens.

I was very surprised at the quality of the images at 50mm and at 500mm. For the price it's a great lense. The images are sharp and very little distortion at 500mm. Do your pushups this lense is heavy. I would recommend this lense.

For us the price was not that important, canon are notoriously overpriced, sooner or later they'll wake up.Sigma Quality is now a class act, best to use a solid tripod for shots over 350mmWeight is nothing, eat more spinach! Like any piece of gear, learn its strengths and use it for that.Very versatile a lens we use it as an all situation lens.Would definitely recommend.

I use this lens mostly for photographing birds. With the automatic focus, I am getting sharp images. I had a manual focus 500mm lens before this and missed too many photo opportunities. I can't wait to get out birding and give this lens a good "workout"! The only limitation is that this lens is a little heavier than my old 500mm lens, but I'll get over that.

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I am purely a recreational photographer. My enjoyment is to hike through the woods or the mountains, and see what treasures I can capture along the way. I travel light, so I don't carry a tripod or lots of extra equipment. I had been debating an upgrade from a 270mm, but shied away worrying about the inflexibility of a 500 mm for closer shots, as I really enjoy macro photos as well. I didn't want to get to a point of having to change lenses a lot in the field or carry multiple cameras with me on my adventures.

My husband surprised me with this as a gift on our way on vacation. I was a bit skeptical about how I would get clear 500mm shots without use of a tripod, but the stabilizer works well! I have taken shots of butterflies at 500 mm-- hand held-- and they are as sharp as can be! Shooting long range shots worked well too. I was pleased with wildlife capture of moose and antelope as well

I would like it to be a bit more light weight of course, but the pros of its versatility outweigh that issue.

The combo of my Nikon D7000 and this lens works well for me--- and I have gotten rave reviews from those who have seen what I can do with them together.

I would definitely recommend this to even the serious hobby photographer.

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

Used primarily as a wildlife lens. The 10x zoom means I can carry just one lens. It is fast enough for most things except you will miss some birds in flight on a burst. The best thing is that even though it is somewhat heavy for a 72 year old, it is not nearly as heavy my Nikkor 200-400 f4 which has been my favorite birds in flight lens. And, it is a forth the price! The auto focus hunts with small critters in low light.

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

This is a very versatile wildlife lens. I have used the 300 f/4 with a 1.4 tc and yes it worked great, but for my purposes it was not practical. Oftentimes, while in Yellowstone, I was too close to the subject for that focal length. However, the versatility of the 50-500 is unmatched. It is not the sharpest lens out there and it does require lots of light but keep it around f/8 and your pictures will come out great. Also, it has really nice bokeh.

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

Just received this lens last Thursday and went into the field with it on
Saturday. Still learning what it is capable of, but my first impression is aside from the weight it is going to do everything I plan on using it for. I was able to get some very nice shots of a Great Blue Heron that I have been take for a number of months. Looking forward to my trip to Tanzania in July with this lens and my D80 unless I can find the extra cash for a D300s.

Comments about Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I was looking for a new outdoor lens for my D7000. The Sigma 50-500 is truly amazing. Great zoom range and clarity. I can see it could be a little heavy for some. However, with the included strap the weight is very managable for a day of shooting. Works great right out of the box - yes I unpacked it and started shooting within minutes. Some have commented on focus issues in low light. I have not experienced this at all.

If you are on the fence about purchasing this lens (as I was)... Go ahead. I have been very happy with my choice.
