I've only taken a few preliminary shots, but so far this kit has met my expectations. The light stand is made of lightweight aluminum but provides a good sturdy base. The soft box is an umbrella style box - so it collapses at that push of a button, but it doesn't expand that easily. Visualize a regular rain umbrella - when you go to open it, you'll push the rib ring up to the tip of the umbrella. Then, usually there is a spring loaded fin that holds the ring up and keeps the umbrella expanded. The problem with this soft box is that the rib ring, when the umbrella is collapsed, will come off the center shaft of the umbrella. This makes expanding the umbrella tedious, you've got to spread the (4) ribs of the soft box apart and then thread the shaft through the rib ring. Then, like a rain umbrella, you expand the soft box until the spring loaded fin is engaged and secures the umbrella open. It's not a deal breaker, but it's also something to consider when you go to purchase a soft box.

Other than that one thing, I really like this soft box. The materials match the function - the shell is a medium grade nylon lined with reflective mylar(?). The front diffuser panel is recessed a few inches, I"m not really sure why, though. There is only one diffuser panel and its a thinner white nylon. The diffuser is sewn to the inside of the box on one side and the other three sides attach with hook and loop fasteners. So anytime you need to make adjustments to the flash, you'll need to detach the diffuser panel.

The stand actually penetrates through the bottom of the softbox via a 4-way zipper opening. This positions the flash unit directly in the center of the soft box.

I purchased this softbox kit in Jan 2014. I planned to use this kit for on-site shooting, so quick setup/takedown and being able to pack it to go was important to me. To start, the idea of an umbrella based softbox is brilliant, but the execution could have been better.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the center shaft is not long enough, so the runner that glides along the shaft as you open the umbrella will come off the shaft as you collapse the box. To open the box, you have the guide the runner into the shaft, and then you can push it to the end to expand the box. I've seen older versions of the kit that has a hollow shaft, so some users have extended the shaft by using a wooden dowel, but in my kit, the end is sealed so it cannot be extended.

As for the diffuser, old versions have the top side stitched in, but in the kit I received, all four sides have velcro.

Since portability is important to me, I was not impressed when I collapsed the box. I expected it to collapse like an umbrella, and although it does, it does not collapse into a tight spiral. It is rather loose and not compact at all. Also, if there was a velcro tab on the outside that would allow the user to wrap it up like an actual umbrella, that would help keep the box compact when folded.

The included umbrella bracket is metal in construction. The opening for the umbrella has a screw-in type holder to secure the shaft of the box, but it does not do its job very well. After tightening, the box is still able to lean side to side, and the slightest push will move the box front and back. Perhaps if the shaft had indents for the screw-in type holder to keep the box tightly in place?

The included umbrella stand has a wide stance, and is of average build quality.

The entire kit does a great job in diffusing light, and after practice, I am able to go from a collapsed stand and box, to fully set up in two minutes. I am also able to collapse the box and stand in one minute.

Comments about Westcott 28" Apollo with 8' Stand and Bracket Kit:

This is a really nice soft box kit. The Apollo can be used as an umbrella or, with the included diffuser attached, as a soft box. Using the supplied bracket kit it is very easy to attach the Apollo and my flash to the 8' stand. It is also very easy to move around and take down. I was very satisfied with the pictures I obtained using this kit.

This is my first soft box. I believe that it is quite adequate for cats, dogs, and portraits. For full body shots, you might consider a larger soft box.

Comments about Westcott 28" Apollo with 8' Stand and Bracket Kit:

I bought this on the reccommendation of a professional wedding photographer and I can say that this is definately a step up from cheaper softboxes out there (specifically the one made by Cowboy Studio). The interior arms are made of plastic instead of metal that you would find in an umbrella. This may sound bad but it actually provides more flexibility and durability. It didn't take long for me to bend the metal arms in the cheaper softbox I own.

My only drawback in terms of design would be that the interior center arm (the one you would use to open it up and spread the other arms) doesn't seem to be long enough so if you close the softbox completely, the arm comes out of the ring meant to hold it in place. This means that the next time I open it up, I have to make sure to pull the center arm through the ring before opening it up. I'm not sure if that was an intentional design choice by Westcott but it is somewhat annoying. This also does not come with a holding bag like my cheaper Cowboy Studio did.

Overall I'm happy with the quality. Time will tell if the arm issue becomes too much an annoyance.

Comments about Westcott 28" Apollo with 8' Stand and Bracket Kit:

I am a hobbiest and just starting out with flash. This is a great start because it has flexibility all in one set for an affordable price. I have more than enough to play with. I can usethe modifier or not, add an umbrella in the future, great height with the stand. The light stand I would probably need sand bags if I were to use it outside though, lightweight.

Comments about Westcott 28" Apollo with 8' Stand and Bracket Kit:

The construction is of good quality, and it sets up quickly. The material is thin but appears to be durable. I mount mine on a microphone boom stand so I have the option to tilt the light down and on an angle for enhanced flexibility. The universal mount that comes with the kit is excellent, as it allows you to tighten a clamp down on your flash for a high degree of trustworthy security. The only two things I could complain about is when you collapse the umbrella it does not collapse completely flat. The umbrella outer supports retain a slight bow when fully collapsed. Its not a major issue but I would not throw it into a bag with stands and tripods to possibly damage this amazing piece of equipment. The only other thing is when you mount your flash on top of the provided universal mount the flash head is not centered in the umbrella, it mounts very high in the umbrella, and it flashes towards the ceiling. To offset this I tilt my flash-head at 90 degrees and use rubber bands to suspend the flash housing below the umbrellas attach rod, and another rubber band around the body of the flash and the stand. This allows the flash to project towards the center of the umbrella and delivers a more uniform distribution of light out of the softbox. If you are even thinking about off camera flash, and you already have a speedlite, this is a must have. I think the end results more than offset the cost and two issues I discussed previously.

Comments about Westcott 28" Apollo with 8' Stand and Bracket Kit:

The Westcott Apollo softbox casts a lovely light on one to three people, both with the velcro'd diffuser and without (in the latter case, the light is harder and more dramatic). The stand that comes with the kit isn't the ultimate in robustness, but with a small sandbag you should be all right. I was worried that the diffuser would prevent the Nikon speedlight from firing (the speedlight was set to remote and the SU-800 controller acted as the trigger), but the box/diffuser doesn't seem to interfere with the IR reliability at all. Recommended.

I wouldn't suggest this for an on location set up that will be set up and borken down a ton. It won't hold up.

Construction of the umbrella style soft box is sub-standard. When wind blows these over, either the "umbrella handle" gets bent (which won't allow it to retract/fold), or the support rods bend, and you no longer have a "square soft box.) I have had two of them damaged in this way. Replacement cost of soft box is prohibitive at $129.90. Light stand and brackets quality is good.

This is such an easy and quick softbox to use! I love how you can just put it up in matter of seconds. And the way it closes up like an umbrella is awesome! My only complaint is that the stand doesn't come with a tilting system. It goes up and down just fine. But you need to buy more parts or put some stuff together to get it to tilt. Most people who are going to buy this are going to want to use it and use it right. Not being able to angle your light is very frustrating to say the least! But other than that it's very strong, easy to use and produces wonderful light!

I absolutely love this soft box its easy to set up and with my sb910 produces great light on location.
I used the tip i found online for this softbox by using zip-ties every few inches which makes it a lot more stable

I was so excited to get this softbox because of it's versatility. Unfortunately the comments about it being rather cheaply made turned out to be true. I recieved it about 3 days before a senior prom shoot and got familiar with it. Prom night I arrive at the venue, go to set up and it won't stay open. The little gaget like you see on all umbrellas that hold them open doesn't keep the thing open. I had to send it back to B&H. I asked for an exchange and am waiting for the new one which I hope will hold up. I like this softbox because I can use it with my Alien Bees and speedlites, so I hope I get a good one this time. Stay tuned!

It takes just a couple of seconds to set up and break down and its very light and compact so it's perfect for location work. It's a little fragile so I'm not sure how long it will last a working pro but at this price it paid for itself on it's first outing.

Comments about Westcott 28" Apollo with 8' Stand and Bracket Kit:

I love this item. Can be used with any speed light. Bracket is excellently made. I use it with yn-622c on the bracket and then YN-568 mounted. What is great about this softbox is the protablity. Its set up is much like an unbrella, and closes down to a very portable size. It uses velcore around the recessed edges to add in the 1 stop white diffuser, and or 40 Degree grid, (sold seprately). the only grip or complaint that i have about it is when you want to use it at a 45 degree angle pointing upwared or downward, you endup leaving a whole where the zipper cannot zip. You can simply put a piece of tin foile on the inside for this, or instead you could mount it onto the stand on the outside. This little problem can be solved with a boom.I have used it both with one stop white diffuser and also with grid and love the effects. Perfect for wedding event photography or on site studio. Great job Westcott, i look foward to purchasing the 50in apollo someday!

This softbox is a must have! The Apollo gives great soft, buttery, directional light. Easily broken down and portable, it becomes a must any time I'm using artificial light.
