The LUMIX G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5 Asph. / MEGA O.I.S. Lens with a 35mm format focal length of 28-84mm is constructed with 12 elements in 9 groups and 1 aspherical lens to produce extremely sharp images with minimal fringing and color distortion across the entire focal range. It incorporates Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) which employs gyro sensors built into the lens to suppress the blur caused by a shaky hand, and enables capturing clear and sharp images even in low-light situations.

Utilizing an inner-focus system driven by a stepping motor, the superior optical design supports continuous high-speed contrast autofocus (AF) and autoexposure (AE) functions for both photos and movies of Lumix G and other Micro Four Thirds system cameras.

I bought an E-PL1s to use with a Metz Digital MS1 ring flash (can control the flash wirelessly). However the Olympus kit lens (14-42) has a rotating front element (No IF), therefore it could not be used with the Metz flash, so ended up purchasing thePanasonic 14-42 lens.

This has IF (the front element does not rotate) and can be used with the Metz flash. Compared to the Olympus lens, it has the following advantages.
    1. 52mm filter size (vs 40.5 for the olympus): Can use regular sized filters
    2. The front element does not rotate: Can use polarising filters
    3. Has a hood and a case included in the price
    4. feels better built
    5. Do not have to extend the lens before use (although the Olympus is smaller because the lens can be locked in a shorter position), I preferred the Panasonic

    Disadvantages
    1. Cannot use built in mega-ois with an olympus body
    2. My subjective feeling is that the AF of the olympus lens was slightly faster, although most reviews of this lens suggested that the AF of the panasonic was faster. I guess they were testing AF on a panasonic body.

I am quite happy with the lens. In any case, I did not have much choice as this is the only body and lens combination, that would work with the Metz ( or any ring flash). The newer version of the Olympus 14-42 is supposed to be an IF lens, however it is available only in Japan as of now.

The price of this lens is it's best feature, picture quality is okay but nothing like the quality of the 20mm F1.7 pancake lens...

I didn't experience any viginetting or distortion through the zoom range but found the lighter tones in the frame were lacking detail.

When compared to my 20mm and 8mm fisheye, this lens isn't very sharp at all. It also lacks the quality feel of the other lenses - seeming almost toy-like.

That being said, I don't lose any sleep using it in conditions that I'd hide my expensive glass from...

Only use it for video on the Gh4 and it does a good job, just doesn't let much light in (but its not $+ either) the O.I.S. seems great, better than my Sony 30mm 1.8 on the FS700I am used to much more expensive Nikon lenses and the plastic lens mount kinda scares me but I did buy this for the Gh4 to go on a brushless gimbal so the SUPER light weight is a bonus Not much to say, its a nice tiny lens but a little over priced for what it is

      Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5 -5.6 Asph. / MEGA O.I.S. Lens:

This a default lens that I will sell eventually, but the work is done in a camera like the BMPCC. It`s design it`s cute and it`s size is small compared to the ones of Canon or Nikon, but the shaprness of the image is not the best. That is what you can expect at the price of the lens.

But as a conclusion, it does the job and really well.

Keep in mind when you buy a lens at this price don't expect it to perform like a 50,000 lens. It does what it's supposed to do. Clean image, does the job and no complaints...as of yet. I only had it for a month. Who knows 5 months from now it could break or works as it did from day one.

I use this product as my main lens for all of my short films. The quality of this lens is spectacular, I'm starting to fall in love with Lumix again after this. The zoom is electronic as well as the focus (an infinite focus mind you) and that makes it all the better as I can click it onto a camera and hit the autofocus button for those minute-to-get-it shots. You know what I mean, like those thirty second snowfalls that multiplies a shot's production value. Overall I really like this lens.

The optical quality of this lens is fine for this price point. However, the smoothness of the zoom ring is lacking. It is stiff and jerky making it impossible to make fine zoom adjustments.

All other aspects of this lens are fine.

              Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5 -5.6 Asph. / MEGA O.I.S. Lens:

I use mostly legacy Minolta lenses with my Micro Four-Thirds cameras, but I wanted at least one versatile dedicated µ4/3 lens, so I could take advantage of autofocus and full program mode in situations that would not allow me the time or attention to handle shooting manual. I purchased this lens when it was on special. Considering even the standard price, and the fact this is designed to be a kit lens, not a professional's right hand, it has performed well and met all my expectations. There have been numerous times that I have been very glad to have it.

The outer construction is plastic, including the zoom and focus rings. The zoom is easy to turn, and not at all smooth; it feels like plastic on plastic. If you zoom while taking video, you will end up with steps in the footage, as well as the sliding sound. For still photos, however, I do not find this to be a problem, and I have no trouble getting the zoom where I want it -- it just isn't smooth getting there.

In terms of optical quality and clarity, it performs well for lenses of its class. Its pictures are not either noticeably sharp or soft. The color rendition seems a little dull, but it is by no means bad. Mine came free from internal dust and blemishes.

For me, the biggest limitation of this lens is the small aperture. I would use this lens a good deal more if it were "faster," but I do not complain; I knew this when I bought it. Practically every other kit wide-mid zoom I've seen is f/3.5-5.6 as well, and anything faster costs easily twice as much.

I would recommend this lens to someone starting to shoot µ4/3 who only wants one lens, at least to start out with. However, I would also recommend that they consider the other µ4/3 selections carefully, too, and I would heartily exhort them to look into the wide variety of good manual legacy lenses that can be adapted to µ4/3, sometimes for much cheaper.

In conclusion, I am glad I have this lens. Paired with my cameras, it is the limiting factor, and I can get much more out of them paired with pro Minolta glass, but I can't sling focus fast enough to catch that deer leaping over the fence, and that's a fact.

I bought this lens so my wife wont touch my expensive lens. To my surprise it is not all that bad. It feels really cheap, plastic case, but it took some great shots. If you are looking for a cheap lens that works...this is it!

Cheap lens, ok for casual photography. I really did not need this lens as I have the original 14-45mm from my G1. However as a spare this is not bad. To be honest it is slightly lighter than the 14-45mm lens, so I have given it to my daughter along with the older G1. An ideal combination for her.

Used during HOG rides and published on Photobucket for all members. Versatile lens, quite sharp images.
Mainly portraits and landscapes actual zoom is 28-84mm therefore suitable for my use.

I brought this lens and G3 together for 299usd. Generally, this lens is not good for high quality picture, but it is pretty good for such low price.
