From toddler to teen to adult the Samsung DVD-C500 Upconverting DVD Player has features ever member of the family can use and enjoy.
Let's take on those toddlers first. For one thing they just don't need a new Blu-ray player to watch Dora the Explorer and her monkey for the jillionth time. We think it'll be quite a while before the bilingual moppet even makes it to Blu-ray.
Have you ever seen what a little kid can do to a DVD in a matter of seconds? Give them a few minutes and the disc will look like Tokyo after Godzilla strolled through it. Well, if a DVD is in really bad shape, it's time to buy a new one. But for minor dings and scratches the C500 has this cool feature Samsung calls Defect Disc Recovery Solution. Samsung says the C500 "plays perfectly through scratches, smudges and tilts." (We think 'tilts' refers to warping.) Rolling Actuator Technology handles the tilts.
The C500 is also dust proof. It actually removes dust as the disc spins. The dusting is augmented by using a Viterbi error correction algorithm to lower the error rate of the recording. All this high technology makes your C500 as close to tot-proof as any DVD is likely to get any time soon.
A feature everybody will enjoy is progressive scan with upconversion. It works when you connect the player to your TV set via an HDMI cable (available separately). The resulting picture is not as sharp as Blu-ray. But it's so close many people can't tell the difference.
The next best thing to HDMI is component video output with digital coaxial audio output. Your C500 has both. They too will give you excellent video and audio.
Your C500 can play not only regular DVDs and CDs, but a number of types you can burn yourself.
Another feature couch potatoes everywhere will love is Anynet+. That's Samsung's brand of the HDMI CEC standard. It allows compatible components that are connected by HDMI cables to be controlled by a single remote.
Take another look at that price. That's all you'll pay for all of the amazing features of the Samsung DVD-C500 Upconverting DVD Player. Kind of makes you want to click that Add to Cart button, doesn't it?

It's a solid DVD player for anyone not yet ready to splash out on a Blu-Ray player. The beginning sequence of Star Wars Episode III (a space battle scene) was very clear on a 32" HDTV using the HDMI 'upconvert' feature. Very nice quality.
But beware, if you're after an XviD / DivX player: this isn't it. The firmware for the DVD-C500 and DVD-C550 may be the same, but only the '550' will play these MPEG4 / .avi files. Whether burned on the 'root' level of a CD or DVD, or placed in a folder, the '500' player here simply will not see the video files ...just as the instruction book warns.

Comments about Samsung DVD-C500 Upconverting DVD Player:
The DVD player works just fine so far(about 7 weeks),but I don't like the remote control, it's a bit small with small lettering, a bit difficult to read. The layout of the control buttons are not as intuitive as some other brands I have used.
Other reviewers have said this unit is very noisy, this is not the case with this unit it's rather quiet.

Comments about Samsung DVD-C500 Upconverting DVD Player:
Bought this model for my daughter whose super cheap model died. I set this one up for her and noticed it was pretty noisy compared to the Toshibas that I own. I offered to return it and get her a quieter model, but she decided to keep this one because the noise does not bother her and she likes the fact that it is supposed to be able to play damaged or smudged discs better(according to manufacturer).

Comments about Samsung DVD-C500 Upconverting DVD Player:
This DVD Player is in our bedroom running on a 27" monitor. It plays the occasional plastic disc when streaming isn't an option. It does the job fine. It is no frills but for the price I can't complain. Except the buttons on the front are impossible to read. I wouldn't rely on it for the big living room set up but for what I use it for, I am happy with it.

Comments about Samsung DVD-C500 Upconverting DVD Player:
This player up-converts to 720*480 quite beautifully. The menu is simple and easy to navigate, while featuring categories like Movies, Photos, Music and Settings. On the downside, it takes about 10+ seconds to load a DVD.
I purchased this DVD player to replace a Toshiba SD6100KU that played lots of formats, including AVI, but failed after only 4 months of moderate use. My only real disappointment with the Samsung is its inability to play any sort of AVI. Convering to MPEG2, 29.97fps, 720*480 worked very nicely, though.
