The remote will eliminate camera shake and works off to the side of the camera, in front, and in back of the LCD screen despite Canon saying you have to be in front. With any very long exposure shots like night photography one needs a tripod or very steady base and/or surface to set the camera on. I find the remote to be pretty quick even when I was doing some handheld photography and discovered the time for the shutter to close seemed faster than if I did it with my hands. However, for now I don't recommend this method since hand hold photography is hit and miss. You also have to consider distance and your lighting as to handhold photography. So, how does this work? You simply change the drive mode which by default is one shot. The remote is represented by an Icon next to your timer/clock icon. This remote like others doesn't allow one to set the exposure or focus. Nor does, the time lapse units for the consumer market. This is not a fault of the actual remotes on the market. I don't know how well the Vello Shutter Boss units work as to focus on these DSLR camera's, but to be clear were not talking about a remote designed for dedicated time lapse photography.Once your happy with the exposure and focus it's press the transmitter button via the remote. Same principal if anyone ever had their kids photographed with Santa for example. Within seconds your picture is taken and later on you can review. On the bulb mode, you simplly let the camera start counting in seconds. For example, if you want a ten second exposure one waits to ten and then presses the transmit button once. It's a little goofy, but with practice works. Again, once has to set the exposure and focus in advance. This remote also works with video, but I've not played with it yet.Reviews here are consistent and people who had a bad experience likley didn't investigate how the remote works or play around to find it's limitations. Electronics are not perfect. Even cameras offered within a manufactures product line will have strengths and postives. I find the Canon G series very good at wide angle shots, but macro or close-up photography is somewhat poor vs. my old powershot SX200Is model. For example in non bulb mode this remote acts quicker when one presses the shutter regardless if your in front, off to the side, or in back of the camera. With bulb mode, I find it works well from the side. Reason likley has to do with the exposure or the time it takes the shutter to close from when it's open. The neagtives and these are very minor are: Remote can easily be lost due to the small size. Canon could of gave a small shoestring so one could were the remote around their neck or wrist since this remote does have a driller hole for such an application. Again, minor since one can get a shoelace for a buck or two. One also doesn't have to buy everything from Canon and assume even a plastic lens cap or some shoe type lace product is better than if you got a knock off lens cap. Seems like this could be cheaper since its a simple electronic device and remotes are very cheap to make. Call me cheap, but again, minor issue.Bottom line : 4 starts out of five. Could be a bit bigger as to preventing loss. Also, made out of plastic which can break if dropped hard enough, but if it was metal = higer cost to manufacture!Below, I added some pictures I took with my Canon in New York City recently. I'll do another follow-up review of this product and show some shots I took using it.

To save on chiropractic bills, I recently downsized from a Canon 7D to a Canon Rebel SL1, and for who knows what reason, the RS-80N3 wired remote switch that works with the 7D does not work with the Rebel SL1. I'd never used a wireless remote and decided it could be a substitute for a remote switch, and come in handy for self-portraits. It is fine for the later, but it comes up short as a remote switch replacement. For me the need to point the wirelss remote at the front of the camera is only slightly annoying. My biggest complaint is that it is not possible to do a "partial press" of the shutter. With a wired remote switch, you can do the partial press of the shutter release button, which causes to the camera to meter and focus -- you can then see where the camera is focusing and the exposure settings via the finder or the LCD screen if you are using live view. With the RC-6 wirelss remote, the shutter trips instantly when you hit the remote's button. There is no ability to do a partial press. This means I have to pre-focus and check exposure by first partially pressing the camera's shutter button, then I can use the remote to take the photo. It kind of defeats the point of a remote if you must touch the camera before taking a photo. This remote works, and there is a not too horrible workaround to my biggest issue, but, I am disappointed that this wireless remote does not have the functionality of a wired remote switch, so only three stars for me.

Got this as a Christmas preset. Great for taking the family portrait (and actually being in the picture.)

This remote does exactly what it is supposed to. It can be a little picky about how well it is pointed at the camera, but I can't really complain about that. The 2-second delay feature is a nice touch.

Comments about Canon RC-6 Wireless Remote Control:

I was looking for a remote to mainly shoot video from my SL1 from a tripod, this was the only model indicated in the manual so I went with thia model. It performs the task I purchased it for with a few adjustments in the menu. I am only using it for family shots and am a novice photographer with a canon camera and lenses.

There's nothing fancy about it, but it does just what you need it to. I haven't tested the range on it, but used it about 15-20' away with no problems.

This cordless remote is handier than a corded one, as you don't have to plug and unplug it. The only downside is the slight delay that may be a factor if you have been waiting for a calm second or two to photograph a flower.

For $[$]it's a no brainer. Just buy it. You have to trigger the release at the front of the camera (7D2) since it works off IR. Too bad Canon doesn't put another photocell on the back of the camera like Nikon to pick up the signal.
