The Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder is an affordable 1/3" ENG camcorder that offers full-raster 4:2:2 sampling using the professional AVC-Intra HD codec. Equally at home recording 100Mbps DVCPRO HD, the AG-HPX370 brings new levels of lowlight performance to its three 1/3" CMOS sensors, utilizing Ultra Luminance Technology to provide the sensitivity and image quality of larger 1/2" imagers.

With two HD/SD-SDI outputs, two P2 media slots, a 17x Fujinon HD lens, and one SD memory card slot (for scene files and user settings), the AG-HPX370 is a top-level image capture device that also offers a high degree of versatility. It can accommodate both 1/3" and 2/3" lenses, it shoots in standard definition as well as HD, and with an optional remote control unit it can be used as a studio camera (aided by the included timecode and genlock functionality).

The variety of resolutions (1080i/p, 720p, 480i/p), frame rates (12-60p), image settings, and recording modes--not to mention the well-known advantages of a P2 workflow--all provide the flexibility, functionality, and sheer image quality that have made Panasonic's professional camcorders the workhorses of so many production environments.

Newly Developed U.L.T. Image Sensor
High levels of sensitivity and image quality have been achieved with a new high-sensitivity photodiode and low-noise pixel transistor, both based on low-noise analog process technology that was accumulated in Panasonic CCD camera development. Plus, the same levels of sensitivity and image quality that are found in Interlace mode are now possible in Progressive mode thanks to P.A.P. (Progressive Advanced Processing), a 3D adaptive processing technology.
Fujinon High-Performance 17x Zoom Lens
The AG-HPX370 series comes equipped with a Fujinon 1/3" 17x zoom lens. Optimized for use with the AG-HPX370 series, this high-performance HD lens incorporates advanced broadcast lens technologies to achieve a compact size, light weight, F1.6 at 4.5mm f-value at the wide end, and excellent zoom response. The zoom is comfortable to grip and use. Also, quick zoom and auto cruising zoom functions can be allocated to the VTR and RET switches.
Chromatic Aberration Compensation (CAC)
This exclusive technology sets up a conversation between lens and camera which allows for a highly sophisticated algorithm to be deployed that will automatically compensate the registration error caused mainly by lens chromatic aberration, and minimize the circumjacent blur.
Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS)
In scenes with mixed contrast, such as when panning from indoors to outdoors, the DRS function automatically suppresses blocked shadows and blown highlights. A gamma curve and knee slope are estimated to match the contrast of each pixel, and are applied in real time. When dark, bright, and intermediate shades are all contained in the same scene, this produces excellent gradation for each shade and minimizes blocked shadows and blown highlights. The images that result are enhanced by a visually wide dynamic range. 1
Flash Band Compensation
The AG-HPX370 series is equipped with highly accurate flash band detection and compensation software on the camera's signal processing LSI. By generating pairs of frames containing flash bands, and frames in which a flash extends from the previous frame to the entire screen, and then using the compensation process to adjust the level, the flash band effect of MOS-based imagers is eliminated.
3-Position Gain Selector / 24dB Gain-Up Function
There is a 3-position gain selector, with L, M and H settings. To each setting you can assign a gain value from -3dB to 12dB, in 3dB steps. There is also a USER button--just give it a quick touch to instantly boost the gain by 24dB.
Newly Developed 20-bit Digital Signal Processor
The AG-HPX370 series incorporates a high-performance 20-bit DSP that handles image rendering processes such as gamma and various detail enhancement functions with exceptional precision. Consuming less power than conventional processors, the new DSP contributes to the AG-HPX370's outstanding environmental performance.
Scene File Dial
Adjust this dial for an instant set of shooting conditions. Six preset files are provided, and you can change any of the six file names and their settings as desired. You can also store and load the settings to and from an SD card.
Slow, Synchro and High-Speed Shutter
The shutter speed can be set between 1/6.25 second on the slow end in 50Hz mode (1/6 second in 59.94Hz mode) and 1/2000 second on the fast end. Used with the variable frame rate function, this allows you to create a blurring effect or crystal-clear stop-motion of sports action. The AG-HPX370 series also features a synchro scan function for capturing screen shots from a computer monitor.
Advanced Image Adjustments Built-In
  • Matrix setting, including a Cine-Like mode
  • Adjustable H detail level, V detail level, detail coring and skin tone detail
  • Adjustable chroma level, chroma phase, color temp and master pedestal
  • Knee point settings: Auto, Low, Mid and High
  • User files can be saved to an SD card and shared with other cameras. User files are separate from Scene Files.
  • 4-position (off, 1/4 ND, 1/16 ND, 1/64 ND) optical neutral density filter wheel
7-Mode Gamma for Richer Gradation
Drawing on technologies developed for the VariCam, Panasonic has equipped the AG-HPX370 with advanced gamma functions that address seven different shooting scenarios and enhance your creative abilities. This includes the Cine-Like Gamma, which produces the characteristic tone of film recordings.
20-Step Variable Frame Rate
Like the VariCam, the AG-HPX370 series allows undercranking and overcranking common in film cameras, to create fast-motion and slow motion effects. In 720p mode, the frame rate can be set to any of 20 steps. 2
1080/480 24p Advance Mode (in 59.94Hz mode)
The 1080 and 480 progressive recording systems convert recordings to 60i in 24p, 30p, or 24pA (Advance) mode. The 24p Advance mode uses 2:3:3:2 pulldown, which allows for an easy extraction to a 24p timeline and no quality loss in the process with compatible NLEs. 3
Scan Reverse Function for Use w/Film Lenses
The AG-HPX370 series comes with scan reverse. This function cancels the image inversion that occurs when a cinema lens adapter is used.
Comes Equipped with AVC-Intra Codec
An AVC-Intra codec board is included as standard equipment. It allows recording in either of two modes: AVC-Intra 100 for full-pixel HD (1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720) images, or AVC-Intra 50 for low-bit-rate, low-cost operation. AVC-Intra is a new codec that further advances HD production. It complies with the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 international standard based on advanced image compression technology, and offers both superb image quality and highly efficient compression. It uses an intra-frame compression system to bring important advantages to professional editing. In the AG-HPX370 series, a new single-chip digital signal processor is integrated with the AVC-Intra codec circuit. This is another way the AG-HPX370 series reduces power consumption.
High-Image-Quality AVC-Intra 100 Mode
With the same bit rate as DVCPRO HD, this mode supports full 10-bit recordings with 1920 x 1080 pixels. It enables the AG-HPX370 to capture master-quality video for high-end video production.
Low-Bit-Rate AVC-Intra 50 Mode
This mode delivers video quality very similar to DVCPRO HD, yet is able to do so at bit rates usually associated with standard definition (e.g., DVCPRO 50). AVC-Intra 50's lower bit rate doubles the recording time per P2 card over DVCPRO HD and lowers storage requirements for editing.
HD Multi-Format Capability, Including Native 24p
The AVC-Intra 100 and 50 codecs let you record in a choice of HD video formats: 1080/25p, 1080/50i, 1080/23.98p or 29.97p as well as 1080/59.94i. These HD formats bring extra flexibility to all of your production needs. The AG-HPX370 also supports 720p recording for HD image production in a variety of formats, including 50p, 59.94p, 23.98p and 29.97p.
Selectable DVCPRO HD Recording
The AG-HPX370 series also supports the conventional DVCPRO HD codec. Because the AG-HPX370 is designed to be used with the AG-HPX170 series/HVX200A series or a DVCPRO HD VTR, it adapts to a variety of system configurations.
48-kHz/16 bit, 4-Channel Digital Audio
The AG-HPX370 series can record full 48kHz/16-bit digital audio on all four channels. You can freely select the audio source for each channel, choosing from mic-in, line-in, and wireless receiver.
New One-Clip Rec Mode
The One-Clip Rec mode is handy for recording a variety of events. Whereas normal Rec mode produces a clip for each Rec start/stop cut, One-Clip Rec mode records up to 99 consecutive cuts as a single clip, which greatly improves the nonlinear editing work that follows. A text memo is automatically attached when recording begins, making it easy to find desired cuts within the clip.
P2 Recorder Section
The P2 recorder section offers reliable, large-capacity, high-speed memory card recording and a number of advanced functions, such as:

  • Immediate Startup and Better Data Protection
  • Clip Thumbnail Function
  • Text Memo (Bookmark) for Simple Editing

I upgraded from Panasonic AG-HMC150 and HVX200 to this camera after using a HPX300. The form is perfect. I worked in news for over 15 years and this camera is the lightest ENG/EFP camera I ever used. Many are concerned about the 1/3 3cmos chip. Yes it is not 2/3.. But the image quality is stunning. It has all the big boy camera qualities. AVC-Intra full 1080p chip with 4:2:2 sampling 10 bit 100Mbps variable frame rate etc. It is truly dream come true. BUT... the image out of the box is shockingly bad. My HMC150 has better quality. Which is really pain in the behind. After many HOURS of playing with P.O.P and Scene files... internal settings and customizing the buttons .... Now the camera is producing the right results.... What's up with that Panasonic? I am using BBC scene files setting for video and film along with several scene files that I created. The result is great... So if you buy this camera ... power it up and immediately go into it's settings and start changing them...

When it comes to getting a lot of bang for your buck, this camera certainly qualifies. Shooting AVC-Intra 100, images are beautiful.

Now for the reality. The camera comes with the lens unattached, with the back focus way out of whack. A small Siemens Star is included, but let's face it, this camera is near impossible to set the back focus due to the tiny 1/3" chip. Simply put, it is impossible to tell when the camera is out of focus at full wide, even on a 17" Panny pro monitor.

Additionally, ergonomics are bad. With a viewfinder that can't be swapped/changed out, even when it's fully slid to the left, it is extremely difficult to get a straight view through it, thus not being able to see the left side of the EVF screen. There is also extreme "rainbowing" on the screen, a significant distraction.

Codecs: Although this camera has AVC-Intra, it has less DVCProHD choices than the HPX170.

Also, there is no HDMI out.

I originally purchased this camera as an upgrade from the 170, in that I already had P2 cards and even AB batteries from another camera.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I should have bought the Sony EX1R instead.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

I do documentary and community TV work. For me its a versatile camera that can adapt to the job I need to do. The shoulder cam format is perfect. Not too heavy and well balanced. The AVC-Intra codec is superb and easy to work with. Don't forget, this camera is accepted by National Geographic so that tells you about the image quality it can deliver.

It's not the easiest camera to set up for an average user but an experinced cameraman will feel right at home as all the controls are practically the dame as on the Pro cams as the HPX500, HPX3700 etc....

I was a bit scared by the limitation of the 1/3 inch chips at first. But after a while I can say those chips perform surprisingly well in low lght. You have to know the limitations of 1/3 inch sensors first and then you can work around those limitations. Contrary to some people say, you can acheive depth of field woth this cam when you know what you're doing. All camera with 1/3 inch chips will have diffraction at small aperture levels. With this one if you keep the aperture between 1.6 and 5.6 you're in business. The image is crisp and vivid.

I use Bebob A95 batteries with it and it goes on forever. This camera is absolutely NOT power hungry. With 2 batteries I'm good for 8 hours.

The post-production workflow with P2 cards is easy and fool proof.

I'm very happy with this camera and I don't regret my purchase.

The only thing I wish is that an HDMI output would be available for an external monitor or Tv as this would be practical in some situations.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

I own the HPX 255 and the 370 - both are incredible. The 255 rides great on my Steadicam pilot and the 370 has a bayonet lens for Front of House long range. Lots of features for the user buttons: y-get, waveform monitor, vectorscope are my favorites. I shoot mostly live entertainment events, the two work great together. AVC Intra 100 codec is killer, and hot swappable P2 cards are the most reliable media I've ever used with tons of cool peripherals. Only complaint is the lack of an HDMI port for a flatscreen i use as a low cost viewfinder. Also, it did not come with a power supply, a battery, or a shotty (lame!). I cannibalized my old JVC (which had a similar lens and batteries) of all its peripherals - otherwise I would have had to spend another $k. Also, it lacks some of the newer features the 255 has: OIS, more user buttons, more gain range, seperate WFM button.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

The camera came in about 4 boxes, very well packed,no problems with shipping. The HPX 370 is a good camera for capturing run and gun type video, however I gave it only 4 stars because of 1/3 chips, and the lens. If you want a camera that gives you depth of field, forget this one. For the production I do which is mainly corporate and training videos this camera works well. Comparing this camera to other cameras in the same class such as the Sony EX series and the Xdcam, this camera has broadcast quality that you can't beat at 4:2:2 100 Mbps and the AVC Intra codec you can't beat this. I have been a customer at B&H for more than 10 years and I have only had one issue and they fixed it right away. They are professional and very trustworthy. I give B&H 5 stars and the camera 4 stars. But you really can't complain. You get a broadcast camera for less than 8 thousand, this is a good buy. When purchasing your next camera base it on what you think you will be shooting the most. I have different cameras for different uses, so base it on this criteria and you will be happy.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

I bought this as a full featured/sized alternative to the HPX 250. I am very pleased with this purchase!! The manual controls of the lens are smooth and a pleasure to use. (but the lens is not really wide enough for Doc shooting. I ordered the 16 x 9 Inc wide angle adaptor). The camera is VERY power efficient. It runs well even on my IDX NPL7s NP1 batteries which was a great cost savings in not having to buy all new batteries for the camera. The sound capabilities are AWESOME!! The auto gain works very well for my Sanken CS-1 camera microphone and my Lectrosonics SR installed into the UNISLOT with ease. The limiters work quite well too.I read some critical reviews about the viewfinder but I have found it to be really clear and easy to see for getting good focus. The menu choices all seem quite good for setting things up just right.Overall, it's a really great camera for a VERY reasonable price. I'm quite surprised that it isn't a more popular choice. I would have offered it 5 stars but I had to by the wide angle adaptor.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

I bought this camera because I wanted to improve the look of my company on all products we offer. When he arrived I liked its shape, size and how well you see.

I've been recording for more than 6 months with this camera and all I can say is it's awesome and brilliant. In the company we have several P2 cameras but this camera has been the best investment I ever made.

I do not need to record as much light the lens is very light without damaging the quality of the video. Thanks again for B & H have good products like this.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

I shoot mostly corporate videos, commercials, multi-camera theatrical productions and documentaries. For the price, this camera is much better than I expected. The ergonomics are great, format and record options are just what I needed. Low light capabilities far exceeded my expectations. HD focusing is easier than I expected, I haven't needed to use the focus assist yet. I love the waveform monitor in the VF display. Images are sharp and color is beautiful. This camera needed very little setup from the factory, only iris and gamma setup. Menus are very layered but easy to manipulate.
I do wish it had HDMI for monitoring, I'm using an SDI converter to check studio levels. Weakest link is the glass, but a very high quality lens would double the price of the camera package. P2 cards are too expensive, hopefully the price will come down. All in all, a great camera for the price!

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

My only reason for it not being a 5 star rating is the mfr's price is too high when compared to its hand-held sibling cam the brand new 250. Its price point is about $3k less (incl lower grade lens and mic). Albeit it has a few more pro features, the price disparity isn't justified, IMO.

BUT, make no mistake, this IS a professional camera! The features and configurations are so in-depth, it's mind-boggling. It took several days to get up to speed on all of its functionality. It is comfortable to use and impressive to be seen with. Most of all, the images are stunning.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

I use the HPX370 camera for ENG and studio work. I had heard that this was the upgraded version of the HPX300 and a possible replacement for the HPX500 - but it is far better than that! The HPX300 was Panasonic's first attempt at a CMOS camcorder and it just looked terrible. The HPX500 wasn't full raster, and was quite noisy in low light. This camera has an all together different sensor, that despite being 1/3", is best in class for color and light sensitivity. In fact we have used these as a "b" cam with the HPX3700 with minimal difference.

There are three negatives, but I don't really think they're that important:

                      1. HDMI output - there is none. As far as I'm concerned, HDMI is not a professional interface with its distance limitations, non-locking connectors (which are expensive and break easily in the field), and HDCP issues. The camera does, however, include 2x HDSDI connectors - more reliable and higher quality than HDMI anyway (you just have to use a pro monitor).

                      2. The lens included isn't exactly pristine and is hard to back focus. True, but it is better than some cameras' lenses at the same price. No doubt a 2/3" HJ lens on a HPX3700 is sharper, but considering those lenses go for 5x this price, a slightly softer picture is to be expected. Also, pros will feel right at home, as it is a manual lens with zoom, iris, and focus in the standard places.

                      3. The scan rate of the R, G, and B are offset in the viewfinder. This can create an irritating "rainbow" effect as you look from one side of it to the other. I suspect this is how they got the price so low. If it bothers you, you can make the viewfinder black and white.

In short, it is not a perfect camera, but an incredible camera for the money and a HUGE improvement over the HPX300 and HPX500!

This camera is rated high because it has so many format outputs? Be aware that they are all digital except for a single nitzee monitor output via BNC! If you want to bring an HD flatscreen monitor out to the field with you, as anybody who shoots long-format, event, recital, seminar, or other field prodctions - you don't even get an HDMI output!! God forbid you need to dual-feed to a projector, closed-circuit simulcast, whatever, as I often do. NO S-video, NO RGB, NO HDMI... [*]

Comments about Panasonic AG-HPX370 Series P2 HD Camcorder:

We are upgrading from SD 4x3 to HD and have been using prosumer handheld cameras. These blow those old cameras away(to be expected). We are impressed with the features and the quality that we got for the price that we paid. I don't know how we ever survived without P2 cards.
