I've used a lot of lav mics, from the $25 range to the $250 range. I got this mic in a package with some other equipment, and have been blown away at its professional sound. The signal-to-noise ratio is awesome, the sound is clear and the design is rugged.

The only downside is that the mic itself is fairly large, and doesn't hide as well when clipped to the talent.

Wanted a lav for to record audio of field intevews but not have to hold a mic or recorder to keep hands free for paper work. Becuase it's a dynamic mic, I expected a lower level, but the levels are fairly good. It is great under breezy conditions without a windscreeen. Biggest drawback is a slight hum but easy to EQ and deal with.

This is a cheap microphone and the noise level makes that fact evident. The capsule is also huge by today's standards. It's like hiding a tube of lipstick on someone's collar. My next purchase from B&H will be a higher quality/more expensive microphone.

Comments about Shure SM11-CN - Lavalier Microphone:

I am using this lav mic to amplify a 5 string banjo. I had been using a generic electret battery driven lav mic (think radio shack) for that purpose, replacing the mini-plug with a female 1/4 inch, then using a standard guitar cord, plugging into a Baggs Para DI, then into the board of the sound system with an xlr mic line. That was OK, but I had lots of thin wire to coil, a fragile battery pod and the nusiance of dead watch batteries if I forgot to switch the thing off.

The SM11 of course needs no batteries and the wiring is much more robust than the cheap lav mic. I can go direct into a mixing board and the sound is quite nice. The banjo doesn't really need a lot of high end amplification, and doesn't produce deep lows -- all of which the dynamic mic doesn't pick up. So the result is a nice warm sound, and much more full-spectrum than the electret mic to my ear. Probably because the diaphragm is larger, I guess.

I don't need to hide this rather large (thumb size)lav canister in clothing, like a video person would. It rides in the backside of the banjo. The included tie clip worked fine, clipped to a little jig I sometimes use. But instead I wrapped the body in some dense memory foam, and made my own mount that also acts as a tone regulator behind the head -- it's an open-back banjo thing.

Looks like this product is robust and should work for years. Works fine going straight into the mixing board. But when I run it through the Baggs Para DI (which is a preamp as well as a DI) I have to use a transformer to change the signal to HI-Z for the 1/4 inch input. Then the output from the Bagg's male xlr (lo-z again) is too hot for the mixing board, so I use a 20db attenuator between the DI out and the board mic-line in. Works fine that way.

Comments about Shure SM11-CN - Lavalier Microphone:

We needed to add two more lavalier mics for a religious "talk show" environment for local cable broadcast.

No need for wireless; we already have a couple of AT condensor lavs, which are fine but delicate, and folks constantly run the batteries down, etc.

We got these almost overnite from B&H (the only vendor where I could find these venerable mics!). They simply work as promised.

We've been using this wired lapel mic for video work and it does a fantastic job capturing the human voice without other ambient noises. The microphone is very accurate, but on the quiet side, so the levels need to be boosted to get a good signal.

They may work for recording but for PA use they are almost unusable! We purchased these in place of our 6 tabletop shure mics but with the mic vol maxed and the output just before feedback my voice is still louder then the output. For reference, our mic levels are on 3.5 and output at 6 of 10 with the desktop shure's and it sounds like WWF announcements so its surely not the amp.. Beware, the sounds is great if your simply recording but for broadcast not a chance.

I've been using an SM-11 since my first run at video production several years ago and recently acquired a second one for it's price and durability. It does record levels a bit lower than other high quality wired lav's. But have always relied on this mic for not picking up too much background and being good at handling itself without too much noise from wires moving, and the like. It's also on the large size, so you'll have to work with it on a subject a bit more. But it's worth it.

I have used this mic countless times for interviews but it has also been used for live lectures as well. I like that there are no batteries to change, the mic is rugged, and has proven to be be a trooper after being handled by 100's of different clients over the past 10 years.

I use them for interviews in the field. Work very well and are really durable. I have another pair of these for 4 years and still in perfect condition. If you care you will have microphones for long. I am no specialist in sound, but for interviews work very well. Clear audio without noise. I never had never interference problems, recording in many circumstances. Do not require batteries and is XLR connector. If you buy a kit sony wireless base can connect to wireless handheld mic and you have another wireless mic tie for little money. The only flaw I could point out is that they are a little big, if you're looking for discretion or want to hide. I put 4 stars because there are microphones with better sound quality, but for journalistic purposes would put 5 stars because it is really very good fighter.

I bought this mic to use when recording personal histories to CD. It's small, easy to attach, and has excellent sound quality[$]The omni directional pick-up pattern insures that the "talent" will sound great even if they turn their head when speaking as untrained people are apt to do.

I have 5 of these. I have recommended them to other performers. I use them on my banjos. The are incredible, I use a tywrap and fix it to a tension hook on the outside of the banjo facing down into a sound hole. It has a great sound, I have used it for years, from a small pa, to onstage for a large audience. It always performs well. I have also used it for recording along with the front mic.

With Banjo, when you move off axis it changes the tone, but with this, mic, you have no problem with that. The sound is always consistant.

                                      Well Done Shure.
