Product Highlights
  • Uses a High Rate Transparency Film
  • Transmits 25% More Light
  • Equivalent to 1/3 Stop More Light
  • Eliminates/Reduces Reflections
  • Rotating Design
  • High Quality Hoya Glass

The Hoya 72mm HRT Circular Polarizing Filter is unique in its design since it incorporates a High Rate Transmission film that permits more visible light to be passed through the filter while still producing the same degree of polarized light. This filter now permits the equivalent of 1/3 stop more light to be taken in yet it still filters the same amount of polarized light. This can be a huge benefit to users of both digital and HD technology cameras and lenses.

Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

This filter also contains UV properties which aid in eliminating the bluish cast on cloudy days or in open shade.

Polarizers should be a part of every photographer's gear. They are useful when you wish to increase the saturation of a blue sky or want to make the clouds stand out more. Moreover, they are handy when reflections are a problem - such as when shooting into glass or on the water.

All of this goes into increasing contrast for a more effective photo. The effect of the polarization can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

Note! Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems without problems)

Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras
Best way to enhance a blue sky, boost cloud detail
Eliminates reflections on glass and water
Can be combined with certain other filters to produce special effects - For example, when used with a red filter, it will simulate a threatening storm

Comments about Hoya 72mm HRT Circular Polarizing Filter:

This filter eliminates the need to stack a UV and a Circular Polarizer. It should eliminate vignetting caused by stacking. While there were some reviews indicating a problem with the shallow thread depth, I find no such problem if you thread the filter on carefully. The front thread wil hold a lens cap with no problem.

I have not yet used this filter in photo taking, but past experience with Hoya filters has been excellent. The only drawback I see with this filter is a lack of multicoating, and it does not appear that Hoya is making this filter in an HMC version at this time.

Comments about Hoya 72mm HRT Circular Polarizing Filter:

Glass is great quality - cuts the glare and makes the colors pop as promised. I am nervous about the filter not being threaded tightly enough to not fall off the lens. I find that I have to be extra careful to not unscrew the filter while adjusting the lens in the field. My solution has been to only turn the polarizer in the direction that tightens the filter. Hoping I don't absentmindedly turn the wrong way. Wish there were a way to lock it into place (besides tape).

Comments about Hoya 72mm HRT Circular Polarizing Filter:

I purchased this with an Olympus 12-60mm zoom and chose the HRT because although I normally carry a polarizing filter with me I rarely use one even when the effects on colours and sky would enhance my subjects because of the light loss.
I was surprised at how much extra light is transmitted through the HRT and I still gained the skies and colours I like and I'm sure the built in UV filter can't hurt.
This filter will be used much more often than my standard polarizer and I am contemplating getting another for my 70-300mm. I recommend anyone contemplating a polarizing filter to spend the bit extra as you will get extra use out of this filter.
I love the thin profile - no danger of vignetting at the wider end.

Comments about Hoya 72mm HRT Circular Polarizing Filter:

The 72mm Hoya HRT polariser is a nice compliment to my Sigma 18-250 OS HSM lens on my Nikon. It makes walking around shooting on a sunny day a more rewarding experience. At the right angle, I can get the dramatic sky blues we see in ads and in lower light conditions, it still manages to capture details older polarisers miss. The one drawback is the threading on the polariser for attaching and removing it. They are too smooth and thin to easily grip. I've had to use an elastic band take it off an on at times.
