I picked up a Petrol PC300 when the strap on my Genus GL-GEN1000 Backpack began to fray and separate at the right shoulder seam. The Petrol offers instant advantages over the Genus, including being less than half the weight of the larger bag (5.6 pounds vs a back-breaking 11.8) and a form factor that was is more taped to the human wearing it. I shoot in Washington, D.C. and take my bags frequently onto public transportation, so this is a vast improvement. The Petrol is even small enough to fit in a plane's overheard compartment, which I feel a lot more comfortable about than handing my entire video rig over to the roulette wheel of baggage arrival.

And despite the reduced size, the inside of the Petrol is better laid out and more usable than the Genus. I find I can fit the same gear in more or less the same arrangement, though a tad more snug, but everything just seems laid out better. This is especially true with the compartment made to cradle your camera snugly in the center of the bag; a thick Velcro thick strap permanently attached across the middle of the chamber accomplishes this very well. And the smaller removable velcro walls are easy to shift around to customize the kit any way you require. Two thin pockets line the inside of the bag lip. The smaller top pocket is clear and the perfect size for an iPad (though it offers basic no protection). The second has a zipper and folded Velcro enclosure and might be able to hold a Macbook Air (again, with absolutely no protection). The Genus offered ample laptop security (enough to barely fit my 17" Macbook Pro from 2008) as well as a third smaller pocket. You only get the bare basics with the Petrol.

There are two deep side pockets (with very narrow, unyielding openings) and matching bungee cords to latch for tripods and other gear to the outside of the bag...and that's it. No outside small pockets for batteries or tapes, no business card pocket or keychain, not even a cell phone pouch (though I found I could swipe the one from my Genus and it fit around the straps of the Petrol just fine). There is a pen holder attached to one of the removable inner walls, but only on one of them, and I found it purely by accident.

The main straps and moulded back handle are quite sturdy, but the support straps across the chest and waist are cheap, light plastic and the shoulder straps a tendency to shift dramatically an inch or so when putting the bag on or off, but stay attached firmly once worn. Still, it's just enough to be slightly alarming when you have $5000 strapped to your back. When properly strapped on, the bag is very comfortable to wear. The 6lbs between the Petrol and the Genus is the largest difference, but the way the smaller bag curves more to fit the back and shoulders is also a huge plus. I never had a feeling for how much space it took up behind me, always underestimating it.

The sacrifices for size and weight begin at the bottom of the Petrol bag, which has no additional protection or stability, making it impossible to stand the bag upright. Worse is how the bag opens face-down so that the narrower, rounded front of the bag is in contact with the surface, making the kit less stable when open than the Janus. And while the nylon-ballistic pockets on the outside of the bag are strong they have no give, so they aren't even large enough to hold a bottle of water.

For me, the sacrifices are worth it. I need my bag to stay on my back almost all the time, as I frequently shoot in nightclubs and outside venues that may view a stray bag with alarm. But if you need to regularly carry anything more than a small kit and an iPad with you, I'd look at a different bag.

For one year, it becomes harder and harder to travel by plane with a video bag. The Airplane companies want at all costs that our bags travel in hold. It is important to have a bag which correspond to the definite sizes. Previously, I bought a bag, the Kata 183 whose cloth tore in the hold of a plane.
About the PC300, I am sorry, but I have a very reserved opinion on this bag. The Petrol bag PC300 is not very practical when we compare it with the PC301 or the PC302. No poaches outside to place plane ticket, program of the shooting, etc. Inside, Sony Z5 enters hardly. The central part is too narrow. It would be necessary to sacrifice one of the sides. It is necessary to unsettle the microphone. After, where to place the microphone ? No pocket is planned and no place for.
There is indeed a dress handkerchief in my dosseret party. However, it is the dorsal part. Very fine. Result : my iPad broke down after a journey.
I think of reselling this bag and of buying from the place the PC302 or PC301. However, both are not approved to travel in cabin.

Comments about Petrol PC300 Deca Shell Camera Backpack:

I use this backpack for my Sony EX1. I wanted something easy to haul around on my back, take in and out of cars, and carry on air planes. This does the trick... but barely. I can fit my batteries and some accessories but at times I fear it may rip as I tug on the zipper. Although the bag could probably use some give (flexibility), so far it has proven sterdy enough to handle any stress.

This backpack holds my medium-sized camcorder (Panasonic HPX250) and its necessary accesories without being too bulky. It's sleek, ergonomically designed, includes a rain cover, a top handle for alternate carrying. At first I thought I wouldn't be able to find a decent sized (but not too bulky) bag for my camcorder, but this worked out perfectly.

The pak is well balanced on your back, much easier to travel with than the shoulder case which I have one also, but much prefer this backpak. Well padded, convenient to open. Perfect for just going around the city looks for shots.

Have a newly purchased Panasonic AG-HPX250P which fits perfectly. Like the adjustable inserts for for batteries, P2 cards, cables etc. Would have liked to have more secure enclosures for small items, as they tend to fall out when the case is opened.

Comments about Petrol PC300 Deca Shell Camera Backpack:

I bought this camera backpack for my son for his 18th birthday. He's a BMX rider and needed one for his DSR-PD150. He needed something he could carry on his back while riding and he loves this backpack for its look, its function and its comfort. The look is low key, it does not scream "fancy camera inside" which is important since his last one was stolen. However he does also love the bright orange interior for its funkiness. It's very sturdy which is important because well, he's a teenage BMXer. It holds everything he needs to carry. And it's comfortable which will be important this weekend while he's riding the streets of Toronto at the annual BMX Jam.
He's very happy with it and I look like a great mother for searching it out and buying it. Winners all around!

A Panasonic AG-AF100 fits very snugly, and I've managed to squeeze 6 prime lenses into this small backpack. The bag feels solid but does not attract attention at all.

I've been traveling with a Pelican Hard Case, and it was a nightmare to fly with. This backpack has made my life easier without a doubt. It has storage for my AGHVX200 plus two pairs of wireless lavs, a shotgun mic, two external hard drives, P2 drive, extra cards etc.. I'm really glad I found this bag.

The backpack is great for outdoor shooting. You can take your gear with you anywhere without worrying. This is extreme gear protection. My camera lies steady in the backpack, no matter what. And I love the rain cover that comes with the backpack.

Comments about Petrol PC300 Deca Shell Camera Backpack:

I use this backpack to carry a Panasonic AG-HMC40, which is a small camera for a backpack this size. But it can also comfortably hold a Sennheiser wireless mic set, a small on-cam shotgun, camera charger, extra batteries, wide-angle adapter, lens cleaning kit, the AG-MYA30 XLR adapter, 25' of XLR as well as a plethora of connection cables and adapters. It is very roomy.

This marks the fourth Petrol camera case I've owned, but the first in backpack form. The main difference is that the shell shape limits the combinations in which you can place the dividers, so your options are more limited when compared to a more standard rectangular case. Your basic layout is camera in the middle and accessories in the side dividers. But I knew that when buying it so I wasn't disappointed.

The only thing that would have made this pack perfect is one or two closeable pockets on the outside, but that's not a dealbreaker. I can pack all my gear, save for a tripod, in this bag, making it perfect for one-man-bands.

One last thing - this backpack is VERY comfortable. The shoulder straps are nicely padded and there is a rigid shaped support form in the back of it. I'm 5'9" and the form fits my back perfectly, very comfy for carrying long distances.

Fits perfect. You can adjust inside (flexible for different camera models). Ideal if you travel a lot with your camera or shoot in "wild". Very comfortable backpack. You can ease travel with backpack any air lines as a "hand bag" on board.
