The Petrol PR410 Deca Transparent Raincover (Black) is a one-piece design cover made to protect various small camcorders such as; Sony PMW-EX1, HVR-Z7 and similar size camcorders from extreme and adverse weather conditions. The Deca Raincover offers quick and easy access to all the camera/camcorder features and the ability to work with the camera's flip-out LCD screen while fully open. Will keep your video camera dry, but kind of a snug fit for the FX1. You need the cold shoe 'adapter' to make this work. LCD screen won't open with cover slid all the way back - need to keep it mostly forward to open the LCD. Works well if hand-held and using eye cup for viewing. KATA cover works much better (roomier). I do like the hard cover over the lens - protects from rain and sun glare.

The PR410 is billed by Petrol as a rain cover for small video cameras. It lists the AG-AC130 and 160 Panasonic models, but does not include compatibility for my camera, the AG-AC90. However the cameras share similar design, albeit the AC90 is smaller, and has a top-mounted LCD panel rather than a side mounted panel for the 130 and 160. So I decided to try it. The quality of the rain cover's material and finish is excellent. The rain cover folds and stores compactly and comes with a mesh bag that would hold the cover well when packing up quickly (in the rain of course!) to allow you to get home, and then remove the cover to let it dry completely.

The cover's transparent section offers good visibility of camera controls and the fabric sections provide good shelter for lens and microphone. Genereous amounts of velcro closure mean you get solid connections.

However, one real test of the cover is how quickly, and how easily, you can apply it. This rain cover is fiddly. There are several flaps to apply, and zippers everywhere... adjusting one flap means you may have to re-adjust another. If you are shooting footage on a 'run and gun' approach, and rain threatens, you would be hard pressed to get this on quickly. Conversly, if you have plenty of time for setting up then this would be a good solution for rain protection.

As to my AC90, there are two major showstoppers. First is that the rain cover relys on a cold shoe support system. Under the top flap there is a short metal stanchion that needs to connect to the cold shoe of your camera. This steadies and supports the whole rain cover, and allows you to mount an accessory on the top track of the rain cover. For my AC90 this cannot be attached. The top mounted shotgun microphone gets in the way. And even with the microphone removed you still cannot make the connection. So the cover will not work, unless you purchase a separate extender of some sort for the cold shoe support.

Second showstopper is that the rain cover is not roomy enough to allow the LCD monitor to be pulled out and viewed. Granted, they don't advertise this case as compatible with the AC90, but since it lists the AC130 and AC160 (both larger cameras) I had hoped.

I've used this for a couple days now, and can't say enough good things about it so far. Two days on the river with steady rain throughout. Kept my FS100 nice and dry. It takes a little effort to get on, but if you allow a few minutes before your shoot you won't regret it. Mounts nicely on the shoe adapter, which helps hold it all in place.

Comments about Petrol PR410 Deca Transparent Raincover:

The product fits over my video camera perfectly. I've never used rain gear that is super easy to use, but this seems to be the best quality and fit. It comes inside a bag, but once you unroll it, there's no rolling it up to store in that same bag. I also like how the zippers allow you to adjust around the boom mic so you can still pick up any nat sound. Great for budget-conscious videographers like myself and I'd recommend it to others!

Comments about Petrol PR410 Deca Transparent Raincover:

The quality of the raincover is immediately apparent. The shoe mount attachment provides a very stable and secure hood for the front of the camera. There is no concern that wind or other events would detach or loosen the raincover. The clear plastic cover is thick and clear able to take a lot of rear and tear.

Comments about Petrol PR410 Deca Transparent Raincover:

I bought this cover for my Sony VG-10 and it is far too big, but at the same time it's too small. This is because of the VG-10s awkward design. The cold shoe is placed further back then on most cameras, making the hood of the cover slightly too short. The construction of the cover is excellent, and with a slight modification I was able to move the support bar to better fit my camera. Another storm tomorrow and now I can look forward to shooting in it.

I bought this cover for my SONY Z5U. After fiddling with the Velcro straps, zippers and the hot-shoe mount (very tricky) I was able to make it work. I had an issue with a zipper wanting to hang down in front of the lens. I do prefer other types of rain covers which use cinch cords around the lens hood and viewfinder.
